Chapter Text

Whumptober Day 10 - hospital flare up

Steven McGarrett, formerly a Lieutenant Commander and leader of Hawaii Five-0, ran away from the only home he’s known for the last ten years. The minute his partner, Detective now Captain Daniel Williams, was kidnapped because he was so important to Steve. He couldn’t take it, and after Danny was released from the hospital after being shot, he says goodbye.

He doesn’t really intend to come back to Hawaii, and having Catherine Rollins appear on the plane helped solidify his way of thinking. Then Catherine proposed he help her complete missions for the CIA and he said no in an instant. He was running away from Hawaii to get  away from missions and danger, and so he just meanders the continental United States.

Steve spends about a month in Los Angeles with his sister, Mary and his niece, and even meets up with Grace, Danny’s daughter. He enjoys spending time there and runs up to San Francisco to visit Chin Ho Kelly.

He wished that he could do that before now, but he’s trying to make up for lost time. He’s still talking with Danny, on the phone and over texts, realizing that leaving him in charge, even while recovering was the best idea.

Tani Rey calls him every week, fills him in on the team antics and also about her and Junior’s relationship. She tells him that Danny misses him but refuses to ask Steve to come home. He says that Steve deserves to do his Eat, Pray, Love thing, not that he knows what that means.

He heads up to Montana to visit Joe, telling him what he has missed and he hopes Doris is with him. He visits Chicago, texting Lou pictures of where he goes and gets phone calls exclaiming he needs to see this and that, and oh make sure Will isn’t getting into any trouble.

When he packed, he didn’t think to ask for refills for his anti rejection drugs and anti-radiation pills, and they require him to come back to Hawaii to refill. He shrugs it off, not thinking about going to another doctor and refilling them.

He continues his travels to the East Coast, starting in Maine during the fall and traveling down to New York, where he spends a couple weeks.

It was in New York where he starts to feel run down, and his nausea comes back full force. He realizes it’s been about five months since he left Hawaii and at least two months since he took any medication.

He was exploring the 9/11 memorial when he got dizzy and the world narrowed in on him, and he thought for a second, he was having a panic attack.

Someone calls 911 and paramedics are trying to ask him questions but he can barely function let alone tell them that he’s skipped his medications because he didn’t want to go home to Hawaii.

He is loaded into the ambulance and taken to a public hospital, where he is greeted by a younger doctor, who asks him the same questions when he just points to his phone and promptly passes out.

—————

Danny Williams, now a Captain, having passed by Lieutenant because apparently he already was one, recovered fairly well from another gunshot wound. It was hurt at his life partner, the man he loved with all his heart, leaving him barely days after he was discharged from the hospital, leaving in the care of his team.

Lou and Renee made sure he had clean laundry, and loads of food, Junior took mother hening to a new extreme, Tani tried to make him laugh constantly and had a chart of who would take him to his doctor appointment. Adam was someone who would sit with him and listen, or bullshit with. Adam was the most constant thing, ditching the Yakuza to just take care of Danny when Steve left with Catherine Rollins.

The Governor had called Danny up a few weeks into rehab, telling him congrats on being Captain, and can you please have Five-0's budget report in by the end of the month. Danny stared at the phone, trying to see if it was a prank when he realized… Steve really wasn't coming back and promoted Danny.

It also helped that Danny knew about the budgets, accounting and everything else that went on with being the leader of a state task force because he had been there since the start, and Steve had needed help with some red tape. The blonde agreed to it, and it was off to the races with everything that came with the title he now had.

He wasn't able to be out in the field, he left that to the younger team members, allowing Tani and Junior take lead out in the field, as Lou wasn't as young as he used to be. The taller Captain would go out with them if it was needed, otherwise the four musketeers handled it on their own.

Lou and Adam traded off who got to take him to his physical therapy appointments, and were always there for a Danny rant or cry fests when it got too much. It helped that Steve kept in constant touch, especially after he ditched Cath in LA, because she thought she could drag him around the world with the CIA.

Yeah Steve went bye and spent six weeks in California with Mary and Chin, and Danny wished he could go, but decided it had to be Steve's decision if his partner got to join him. He wasn't going to push Steve further away by pestering him.

His physical therapy ended, and while he regained a lot of strength, he still wasn't at his full potential due to his numerous injuries in both shoulders. He was also older than he was ten years ago, and his body took longer to heal. He wasn't mad though, because he was helping train the next generation of cops.

It has been five months since Steve left him on the beach, and it was a late night of chasing criminals and research at the office when his phone rang with a New York number. Curious who it was, he answered.

"Captain Danny Williams." Danny put it on speaker, because he was so close to seeing where the latest batch of criminals stored their off shore accounts when a New York accent came through the line.

"Captain Williams, this is Dr. Max Goodwin, the medical director at New Amsterdam hospital in New York City. Do you know a Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett?" Danny stopped cold, for a second and forgot how to breathe. He hadn't heard from Steve in a couple days, but sometimes he would fall out of contact, stuck in his own head.

"Yeah, I do. What did the Neanderthal do now? Get shot? Get blown up?" Danny said, once he recovered from initial panic.

"Uh, no none of those things. It seems that Commander McGarrett had forgotten to take his anti rejection medications and it seems that his radiation poisoning also flared up with his recent travels. Your name and phone number came up under his emergency contact information."

Danny's yell of pure anger drew his teammates. That idiot of a man risked his damn life and didn't want to come back to get refills. "What do you need from me, Dr. Goodwin."

"Well, he's alone and I was hoping you would be able to come down and fill out his paperwork. Our billing department can be anal about these things." Danny sighed, waving the others out of his office for a moment.

"That's gonna be a problem, Doctor. I am currently in Hawaii, and it will take me at least a day to get a flight out there. I can fill out any relevant medical information you need, I've been there for most of it, and I have to check out his insurance, since he's no longer employed by the state of Hawaii. If you email me any paperwork, I can fill it out and make sure it gets to your billing department."

"Hawaii, huh. Is there anyone closer than could come and sit with him. He's a little…"

"What is wrong other than what you told me?"

"You're also his power of attorney and next of kin. Right, so we think the radiation poisoning and his transplant made him susceptible to an infection that is causing a high fever. He's delirious and asking for Danno."

Danny leans back in chair and tries to hold back his tears. "My mom and pops live in New Jersey. I'll call them and see if they can get there today. If I'm correct, Clara Williams is secondary to me on his…"

Adam comes in and shows him his phone. "Actually if you don't need any medical decisions made until I get there, I have someone that is in the city as we speak. She can sit with him til I get there."

"Uh… yeah sure. We can ensure she has access to his floor. He charmed most of our staff." Danny could hear the absolute sarcasm in his voice and laughed bitterly.

"That doesn't surprise me in the least. A Miss Kono Kalakaua will be at your hospital in a few minutes and she can play referee between Steve and any doctors." Danny said, smiling his thanks at Adam. "I'm also gonna sic my mother on him, he listens to her. Her name is Clara Williams and she may seem small, but she is mighty."

The man on the other line laughs appreciatively. "One other thing, Captain…"

"If I'm gonna get to know you, it's Danny, Doctor."

"Then call me Max. I think Steve is in need of a psych consultation. Our psychiatrist, Iggy Frome, is amazing. I think it would benefit Steve greatly if Iggy spoke with him once he isn't delirious."

"I think that is a great idea, Max. Can you also ask him if he's willing to consult for me too? It's been a rough couple years, and if Steve is comfortable with him, then I am too."

Max made a surprised noise on the other end. "I can definitely ask. Uh, my assistant just pointed out that you are pretty famous, leading a state task force. Iggy works with veterans, and first responders, so he definitely can help."

"Good. I haven't really seen anyone since the shooting, but I would appreciate it. I'll be on the next flight out. Aloha."

"Aloha, Danny. See you in a couple days. I'm going to send you the list of Steve's doctors."

They hang up and the looks of his team make him smile. "Guess I'm headed to New York as soon I…"

"You're on the 6am flight to Los Angeles, then a 1pm flight to JFK, where Kono will pick you up and take you into the city." Adam says, credit card out, while Lou seems to be on the phone with Rachel, who is going to pack a bag for him.

"Kono is going to read him the riot act," Lou says after he finishes his call to Danny's ex-wife. "Before you do."

"I seriously wish I could meet this Kono you all keep talking about," Tani laments, smiling at Danny.

"Danny, I have it from here. Go bring your man home." Lou says, when he stands up and they ambush him in hugs.

"Don't worry. That man isn't leaving my sight until he is discharged and on a plane here. He's done running from me."

The murmuring starts to increase, so Danny texts his mother to call him and prepares mentally for the flight.

He was going to kill Steve, then bring him back to life so he could kill him again. He really should have gone after the idiot.

Either way, he has Clara Williams and Kono Kalakaua to read Steve the riot act. He really hopes New Amsterdam is ready for him.

Notes:

The other two chapters will be up after I move and the tobers are finished. Next up, Steve and Danny are adrift in a yacht with Buck.
