Work Text:
there was a gentle knock at your apartment door. the neon light of your clock shined 1:05. there was only one person in your life who would come visit you this late at night. you got up from your comfortable position on the sofa and walked towards the door, peeking through the peephole. you sighed softly when you saw bokuto standing there, moving back and forth on his feet. after you opened the door, he smiled at you, despite the injuries he had.
“kōtarō,” you said his name, placing a hand on his cheek.
he leaned into your touch, not wanting to move away from the warmth.
“i know, my love. i know.”
you gently pulled him into your apartment, closing and locking the door behind you. you left bokuto in the living room as you walked to the bathroom, wanting to grab the first aid from under the sink. before you walked back, you grabbed extra clothes for bokuto.
“sorry,” he mumbled.
“for what?”
“showing up unannounced,” he paused and looked at the clock, “and late.”
“you wouldn’t be kōtarō if you didn’t do those things.”
bokuto tried sitting up, but you stopped him. he looked at you and smiled apologetically. you placed the first aid on the coffee table and sat next to him. before you could start cleaning up the wounds, you gently took off his long sleeve and tossed it to the other side of the sofa. you shook your head at his newly formed bruises and cuts on his chest.
“your face will get stuck like that if you keep frowning.”
his voice was filled with playfulness, not wanting you to hear how much his body hurts. you rolled your eyes at his comment and started to clean the cuts. bokuto winced when the cold cotton ball hit his body, but he quickly got used to its temperature. the more you looked at his chest, the more you noticed the fading bruises and new scars. you wanted to ask bokuto about them, but you knew he would never tell you.
he didn’t want you to worry about him.
you rolled your eyes at your inner thoughts and switched to the gauze. bokuto opened his eyes and looked at you through half closed eyes. he looked at you with such love and fondness. you were, are, precious to him, whether you knew it or not. he remembered all the times where he would smother you with kisses and how you would push him off of you, only for you to pull him back towards you.
bokuto lifted his hand and gently tucked a hair behind your ear. you looked up, confused by his sudden gesture. he opened his mouth to say something, but quickly closed it. he knew what he wanted to ask, but bokuto could never bring himself to ask.
for the next hour, you cleaned and bandaged him up. it wouldn’t have taken you such a long time, but bokuto kept fidgeting and making you laugh. you got up from the sofa and started cleaning up the mess, wanting to get rid of the awful medicine smell as quick as possible. bokuto was memorised by your movements, how you kept going in and out of the living room. he leaned his head back on the soda and closed his eyes, never wanting to forget today.
before he could drift away, bokuto felt something cold on his palm. he opened his eyes and saw that it was a penny.
“penny for your thought.”
bokuto blinked for moment before shaking his head, laughing softly.
then everything fell silent.
he wanted to find the right words and your heart kept racing, anticipating what he wanted to say.
“do you ever wish to take back those words?”
“sometimes,” you admitted, “but we’re better when we’re apart.”
now it was your turn to move his hair away from his face.
“just because we’re no longer together, it doesn’t mean that i stopped loving you.”
he placed his forehead on yours.
“i don’t think i’ll ever stop loving you.”
