Chapter Text
Waking up was, frankly, rough. He felt sick, his stomach felt like it was in knots.
Spamton went through this every year, and each time he hated how sick he’d felt. Hesitantly, he climbed out of bed with a groan, stretching and trying to shake off the nausea he felt.
As he walked out of his room, he spotted Proton sitting on the couch, relaxing and enjoying a drink. Spamton walked over, sitting next to Proton and lightly resting against him. Almost instinctively, Proton wrapped his free arm around Spamton in a gentle embrace, looking over at him with a smile.
“Good morning, Spammy.” Proton said, planting a kiss on Spamton’s forehead, getting a small laugh from the salesman in response. “You really slept in today, huh?”
Spamton stood up for a moment, giving Proton a kiss on the cheek in return, before quickly sitting back down as his stomach started to act up again. “GOOD MORNING, BELOVED.” Spamton says. He smiled, trying to not concern Proton with his current condition, but Proton could tell something was off already as Spamton rubbed his stomach in an effort to try and ease some of his nausea.
“...Are you feeling ok dear?” Proton asks. “You’re rubbing your stomach an awful lot...is your stomach hurting, perhaps?”
“...I-I DIDN’T REALLY WAKE UP ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BED TODAY…” Spamton responds, sighing. “MY STOMACH FEELS LIKE IT’S IN KNOTS…”
“...I see...” Proton nods. “Maybe I should make you some soup? Perhaps that could help. It’s odd you're so sick all of a sudden, I think you should go lie back down.”
Spamton remains quiet for a moment, before nodding. “Y-YEAH, I-I THINK THAT WOULD HELP. I-I’M...GOING TO LIE BACK DOWN.” Spamton says, getting up from the couch. “...i hate this time of year...” He mutters to himself as he walks off.
A bit later, Spamton is lying in bed again, this time with a cup of warm soup in his hands and Proton sitting by his side.
“Is the soup helping with your stomach ache, hon?” Proton asks. Spamton nods in response, smiling a little.
“YES, A LOT. TH-THANK YOU, DEAR.” Spamton says. Proton smiles, giving Spamton a kiss on the cheek.
“That’s good, hopefully you feel better soon.” Proton says, then proceeds to take a sipp from his drink.
“It’ll be a lot better once these eggs pass…” Spamton mutters, assuming it was too quiet for Proton to hear, but the sound of him spitting out his drink made Spamton flinch. Clearly Proton had overheard that remark.
“E-Excuse me, d-did...did you just say EGGS ?!” Proton asks, a shocked expression on his face as he turned back towards Spamton.
“I-I’m sorry...I-I never told you about th-that...it’s...it’s just...r-really awkward...I-I was just...really embarrassed about it...a-and I-I was going to tell you about it but...e-every time I tried I just got really nervous that y-you’d get mad that I never told you earlier and-”
“Hey, hey.” Spamton’s muttering came to a stop as Proton softly grabbed one of his hands, lifting his head up to look at his partner. “Spamton, I assure you, I’m not mad over this. I’m shocked, yes, but...I could never be mad at you. I understand if this whole thing is something uncomfortable to talk about. You can tell me anything, I promise I won’t get mad at you for it.”
“...I-It’s...a yearly thing. M-My kind of monster hatches from eggs, a-and every so often a year we usually produce a batch of eggs. I-It only happens once a year for me, though. A-As you can see, it...can make me pretty sick...” Spamton says. His tone had softened from his usual, overly energetic salesman voice. Proton nods a little, taking a moment to sort of comprehend the information he was told.
“...I understand...do...do your eggs ever...hatch, or...?”
“N-No, no. I’ve never had one hatch...all the ones I've had previously were all sterile. I use them for attacks sometimes.”
“...Wait...is that what those Pipis are?” Proton asks. “I could’ve sworn they were clams...”
“Camouflage. [Pipis] clams tend to stay in groups to protect from predators, so eggs mimic the look of them to deter anyone with ill intent.” Spamton says, rubbing the back of his head. “I-It’s awkward to talk about...b-but...I-I’m so glad you understand...i-it really makes it a lot easier...”
Proton smiles, gently laughing as he stroked Spamton’s hand with his thumb.
“Of course, dear. After all, you and I aren’t the same kind of monster. I may not fully understand how your kind of monster acts, but I’m more than willing to learn.” Proton says. “So...how long does it usually take?”
“...Luckily, not long. A week or two, most likely. Y-You’ll probably know when it happens if you’re here because I’ll head to the back room...” Spamton says. “I-I’ll probably stay back there and rest for a bit too...i-it’s a bit draining to go through, of course.”
“All right then. Just, if anything bad happens, please let me know, ok?” Proton says.
“A-All right, I promise.” Spamton says, nodding.
Proton smiles, giving Spamton a kiss and standing up.
“I’ll leave you to rest for now, ok? I hope you feel better soon, you know I get worried.” Proton says, walking out, though pausing at the door and looking back at Spamton. “I love you, Spammy.”
Spamton’s mood seemed to spring right back up to his usual chipper self. “I LOVE YOU TOO, MY DEAR VIRAL WARRIOR~” He says, smiling warmly, though pauses as a thought comes to him. “O-OH, PROTON?”
“Yes?”
“...C-COULD WE...NOT TELL VUNDO AND TACKLE ABOUT THIS?...I JUST...DON’T FEEL READY TO LET THEM KNOW JUST YET…”
Proton nods. “All right then, I understand. I won’t let them know about it yet. Now, get some rest, ok?”
“ALL RIGHT! I’LL SEE YOU IN A LITTLE, DEAR~” Spamton says, lying down as Proton walked out.
To be frank, he had thought about if he and Proton had another child. One day, maybe...but unfortunately not one of their own. At this point, Spamton was certain he was simply infertile. It was a sad thought of not being able to have a kid of his own, but at the same time, he wouldn’t mind taking in another child if the situation popped up. After all he’d been through, he couldn’t bear the thought of a child having to fend for themselves on the streets, it was rough enough for him, a child would’ve had it much worse on their own out there. But, he tried not to ponder on the thought for too long, snuggling into the sheets of the bed and trying to rest off his morning sickness.
