Work Text:
Izumo was passing the time away by listening to the opening song to the recently aired adaptation of Kimi Monogatari on her phone. Something she would literally not shut up about since it was announced. She sat at her dorm's desk; tapping her feat with the incredibly catchy beat as she was working on a report for one of her classes that was due next week.
Suddenly, there was a knock at her door. It sounded very excited and would not SHUT UP! She paused her music, angrily ripped out her earbuds and stomped over to the door, and opened it filled with frustration only for that to subside once she saw who was on the other side.
Her boyfriend Rin Okumura. Grinning like a mad man.
Said boyfriend was bouncing up and down with his hands behind his back, obviously hiding something. "Hey, Izumo. Guess what?" Izumo raised an eyebrow at Rin as he shoved a sheet of paper straight into her face. She took a step or two back in shock as he continued. "I got a perfect score on my English Exam!"
Izumo swore that her ears were filled with wax. The sentence "I got a perfect score on my English Exam" should be impossible for Rin Okumura to say truthfully; though she gave a small smirk and nodded her head in contempt. Guess all those study sessions really paid off! Rin then lowered the paper and leaned closer into her face.
"And you know what that means... Right?" Rin asked showing the grin on his face getting larger. Izumo looked at him confused like he was spouting the most insane conspiracy theory on the planet. Then the realization hit her like a ton of bricks.

"Gaaah! Why the hell is English so hard!" Rin said, slamming his face on his desk in frustration.
Izumo furrowed her eyebrow at her new boyfriend's lack of learning capability. "Rin, you know you need this more than the average Japanese citizen. Once you become an exorcist, you're gonna be working a lot with other English-speaking Exorcists, and you pretty much know that communication is key." She said flicking him in the side of the head to get him up.
"I know that!" Rin started, rubbing the spot where he was flicked. "I just need some motivation so that I can be determined and put my face in the book!"
Izumo rolled her eyes and sighed. 'Your face was JUST IN the book.' She thought. "You want me to go on a date with you if you ace your next Exam?"
Rin lifted his head from the bed and looked at his girlfriend, obviously interested in her proposal. "It can't just be a regular old date. Because it's gonna be our first AND it'll be a reward, I want you to do something special! I want you to wear your hair down!"
Izumo gave him a confused look. Really that's what he wanted? Not like sex or anything? Well, to be honest, it didn't seem like Rin to ask for sex when their relationship was just starting out. Shima on the other hand...
"Alright. I'll wear my hair down for our next date." She replied with a confident attitude. Rin fist-pumped as the two resumed their studying.

Izumo facepalmed at her past self's actions. She really didn't want to go on a date with Rin this early in their relationship. They've only been together for not even a week, and she only decided to be his girlfriend out of pity for him after Shiemi had unfortunately rejected him.
But then again, this WAS pretty much the first A he’s gotten in high school. “Yeah, yeah, I remembered. So, when is this date?” She asked as she crossed her arms, letting Rin answer her question.
“This weekend! Yukio’s gonna be out of the dorm on a mission so we’ll have the whole place to ourselves.” He responded, not being able to contain his excitement. “No need to dress fancy, it’ll be casual. Anyway, great talk! I’ll see you then Izumo!” He shouted as he began to run off, the last words he said, were spoken like a quiet whisper, despite the fact that he was shouting them at the top of his lungs.
Izumo gave a final sigh as she closed the door and went back to her studies.

Aside from the festival, Izumo couldn’t recount the last time she wore her hair down. It was always styled in twin tails, a ponytail, or a bun when she went to use the bath. She had to admit, it WAS a breath of fresh air from the mundanity of her usual hairstyles. She gave it a few more brushes to top off the smoothness and went to her drawer to pick out the outfit she decided to wear for the inevitable date.
She decided for a red and black plaid skirt and a pink, sleeveless top with a fox decal on it. She then followed it up with a pair of black thigh-high shocks and white tennis shoes. Confident with how she looked, she exited her dorm room and began her short trek over to Rin’s dorm.
The walk was short, despite the size of True Cross Academy’s campus and there wasn’t else walking around thanks to it being late in the day. Once she arrived at the Okumura twin’s dorm. She could hear the faint sound of someone struggling with something inside. Izumo decided to give the door a knock or two, which caused a voice from the inside to give a manly shriek. “Ah! She’s here already!” It was a few seconds later that she saw the door open up; revealing Rin in his normal clothes along with a dirty apron. “Hey, Izumo! Sorry for the mess that is… Me. I just finished making dinner.”
Izumo raised an eyebrow. “We aren’t going out first?” Rin responded with a chuckle.
“And skimp out on you tasting my amazing cooking? No way!” Rin waved to her to come inside which she accepted. “Okay, just sit down at one of the tables and I’ll get into some clean clothes. Rin dashed down the hallway and up the stairs while Izumo remembered her time here early in the year at the retreat where Paku got attacked. She walked towards the cafeteria with a vague memory of the place but was successful.
After a minute, Rin came downstairs and into the cafeteria to present his new look to Izumo. He was wearing a dark-blue button-up shirt with jeans and white tennis shoes. Rin then went into the kitchen to take out a pair of sukiyaki dishes that he prepared specifically for this date. “You have no idea how much I experimented to make the perfect sukiyaki dish for this date.” He said returning to the table Izumo was sitting at with both dishes. He placed one in front of her and the other where he was sitting. “I even had to ask Paku what your favorite spices were and added them to your dish.”
Izumo was shocked at the lengths Rin went through to get her to enjoy their date. She gave an impressed nod as she broke her chopsticks and decided to eat with Rin cheerfully staring at her in anticipation to see if she’d enjoy it. She picked up a piece of the food with her utensils and into her mouth, and…
It was amazing!
She then quickly began scarfing it down. Rin, now happy that he was able to please his date’s appetite, also began eating his plate of sukiyaki. After a couple of mouthfuls of sukiyaki. Izumo drank from the glass of water by her side of the table to clear her throat and then asked Rin a question that was on her mind. “Why did you want me to wear my hair down?” She rested her cheek on her palm as she looked at her date.
Rin looked up from his dish, slightly dumbstruck. He swallowed the chunk of food he was chewing on and picked up the napkin next to him to wipe his face before he answered her. “I guess it’s because… I think you look so much more beautiful when your hair is down.”
Izumo’s face turned bright red as Rin answered her question. She began to stammer for a retort, but she couldn’t bring her heart to do it. This was Rin’s reward for his exam grade, she gave a sigh and rubbed the back of her neck, then looked up at Rin and responded with “Thanks…”

Rin came back from putting their dishes away in the dishwasher and got Izumo’s attention. “C’mon. I’ve got something else in store for this date.” Izumo raised her eyebrow in confusion, but she decided to follow him out of curiosity.
Rin led her up to the roof of the dorm. The moon was finally peaking itself over the horizon. Just below it, you could see the entire view of a small town below. Honestly, the view was breathtaking. She and Rin then climbed up onto the ledge and looked out onto the town. “So why did you bring me up here?”
Rin looked back at her with a still beaming smile. “Well, I wanted to talk with you some more. It’s not often that we have alone time with each other.”
Izumo looked away from him in contempt. “So, what did you wanna talk about?”
Rin responded quickly. “How are you holding up? After the fiasco with the Illuminati, I mean.”
Izumo lowered her head. “Honestly. That was the worst moment of my life…” She began twiddling her thumbs. “Thinking that my mother never gave a shit about me or Tsukumo, then she gave her life to save me and with her dying breath telling me that I was ‘her treasure’…” A couple of seconds later, Rin could see tears rolling down her face. Her next words being distorted by her sobs. “And then… s-seeing Tsukumo after so long. And then finding out that she doesn’t remember me at all!”
Izumo then reached over to hug Rin which he reciprocated. Rubbing her back in comfort. ‘Good job Rin, making your girlfriend cry on her first date. That'll go down in the history books.’ He thought. He simply whispered into her ear. “I’m still sorry for your loss…”
Izumo slightly wiped her eyes and spoke up. “It’s alright. You can’t really understand how I feel right now.”
Rin then slightly let go of her as he began to open up to her. “Do you know why I want to become an exorcist?” Izumo looked up at him and raised an eyebrow. To be honest she never really asked him why. She sat up and Rin began to rub her back as he retold her of his motivations. “My foster-father, Shiro Fujimoto, he was unfortunately possessed by Satan. An event that was most likely my doing…” Izumo’s eyes widened as he realized where his story was going. “I told him that I never thought of him as a father. It broke his heart; letting Satan take action. As I was being pulled into Gehenna, Fujimoto was able to regain control for a bit and stab himself to try and kill them both. He died for me.”
Izumo put a hand to her mouth in shock. Good god, they basically both had the same experience. She then decided to give Rin a hug now and he reciprocated. The two then started to cry within each other’s arms as the moon climbed higher into the sky.

“Sorry for making you cry on our first date…” Rin said to his girlfriend. Their eyes were both puffy from all the crying a few moments ago. The two were now outside of the dorm now as Izumo was about to head back to her dorm.
Izumo shook her head. “It’s alright. I’ve been meaning to open up a bit; I guess the same could be said for you.” She had a slight smile on her face as she fidgeted her foot on the concrete below the two. “Well… I guess I’ll see you next week in cram school.” She said before giving Rin a wave and turned around to start heading back to her dorm. Rin decided to do the same. “Oh yeah… one more thing,” Izumo spoke up towards her boyfriend. Rin turned around in curiosity.
Izumo then gave him a deep kiss on the lips. While her eyes were shut, Rin’s were wide opened in shock. Eventually, he also closed his eyes then placed his hands on her hips while she wrapped her arms around his neck. Once the kiss was broken, she stared at him with slightly opened eyes and whispered. “Next time you want to ask me on a date, it doesn’t have to be a reward.”
She then began to walk away, leaving Rin standing there love-struck and waving at her with a grin that went from ear to ear.
