Chapter Text
I sat alone in my room, reading my new book I acquired on my last visit to Midgard. While I rarely enjoyed my forced visits, the very least Thor could do was accompany me to a bookstore. Having read most of the books we have on Asgard, I am always looking for new reads. It was the only benefit the horrid place has. Aside from one person. Y/N. I thought of her often, against my will.
Almost like he was summoned, Thor appeared before me. "Hello, brother." I spoke, not looking up from my book.
"I have something that might interest you, Loki." I could hear the grin on his face.
"I'm listening. Make it quick, I have things to do." I waved my hand, urging him to speak.
"It is a certain Midgardian's birthday coming up. And you have been invited." That got my attention. I lifted my head from my book.
"Does this Midgardian have a name?"
"Y/N." Thor's grin was almost unbearable. I wanted to reject the offer just out of spite. But the idea of seeing Y/N again...
"Fine. Allow me to finish my book, and grab my things." I dismissed, trying not to show the excitement I felt.
Thor nodded. "Certainly, I will be waiting."
I attempted to focus on my book and failed, my thoughts only going back to Y/N. Every time I was dragged to Midgard, everyone made me very aware of their... distaste for me. Aside from Y/N. My past did not matter to her any. She never even thought of it while she was around me. Each smile was genuine. She wanted to know me, regardless of my brainwashed history with Thanos. There was no fear whenever I got too close, or our skin touched.
I gave up on my book and decided to change. I went with a simple Midgardian look. With a small movement of my hand, I was dressed in an all black ensemble Y/N would call a suit, matched with a green tie. Y/N thought I looked nice when my hair back once, so I went with that style as well. My only disappointment, I had no gift for her. Alas, I made my way to find Thor and let him know I was ready.
Thor brought us to the Avengers Tower, a place that screamed Tony Stark. I dreaded it, but one look at her and I suddenly felt less miserable here. I saw her at the bar as I saw most of the Avengers around the living room table. And the Soldier was staring at her. Unintentionally, I looked at him too long and peaked into his thoughts. They were of her. Him on top of her. Her moaning his name. I saw red.
And then he quickly changed. To his fear. His love for her. And his fear of ever hurting her. He cared for her, in a deep and full way. He replayed the morning after in his head, I felt his heart break as he acted as if he didn't truly love her. What insane, childish thoughts.
Thor brought me back to the party. "Brother, let us greet the birthday girl." I simply nodded, following after him.
"Lady Y/N! I'm thrilled I could be here for your birthday! And thank you especially for inviting my brother. He is honored to be here." Thor boomed, moving out of the way so I could move forward.
She was also thinking of him. Not understanding how he could be so cruel to her, wondering what she did wrong. I couldn't bare to just stand her and listen to the two of them and this nonsense. How ever much I cared for her. I would put an end to this, for once and for all.
I gave my best smile "Yes, thank you. Happy birthday, Y/N."
I could hear her thoughts, thinking about my apparel, I did well apparently. "Thank you, Loki. You clean up well. I'm glad you made it." She smiled at me and I instantly smiled back.
I watched as she made sure to wonder around the room, never wanting anyone to feel left out and being sure to thank every person for coming. It looked exhausting and yet, she smiled the whole time. The party slimmed down, finally. We all gathered onto the couch as they debated what drinking game to play. I find it odd that Midgardians need a game to drink their own liquor. Childish, but to each their own I suppose.
Someone had suggested truth or dare and the soldier shut that idea down firmly. No doubt being that was what initiated their night together. Y/N looked at her drink.
I couldn't stand by anymore. I walked towards her. "I don't mean to overstep, but I do happen to read minds. I may have...unintentionally read yours and I have some thoughts. If you're interested." I spoke and looked directly into her eyes, hoping to portray that I was here for her.
"I'm sorry, how do you unintentionally read someone's mind?" She smirked at me.
I chuckled and pushed my hair back as I leaned against the bar next to her. "Where I'm from, the minds are harder to read. It's more like I have to force myself to not read minds here. I promise, I meant no disrespect. I understand there was an incident with the soldier there. And while you may think it was a regret, he does not." She did not respond so I continued. "He cares for you. Yet he's afraid to harm you."
She still continued to just stare at me. "You don't believe me." She shook her head. "I can prove it, if you allow." Y/N gave me a nod so I leaned in and whispered in her ear, attempting to be a bit bold, I placed my hand on her back. "He's looking now isn't he? He hasn't looked away since I walked over here. I'm going to touch you, then we're going to walk away, preferably to somewhere private. I will behave, I promise. Is this okay?"
I slowly moved my hand down her back until I reached her behind. She turned to look at me and smiled. "Yes." I gestured for her to lead the way, and followed after her.
She opened her door and let me walk in before her. I placed my hands behind my back and looked around at her room. There were pictures all around, with everyone. All the Avengers, even a photograph of her and the soldier, as he was eating something. I could tell having pictures of everyone was important to her. It was such a small and sweet gesture. I could tell she was getting nervous, so I sat on her bed and patted the pillows next to me.
Her nerves got the best of her as she sat across from me instead of next to me. "So...what now? How does this prove anything?"
I smiled, her confusion and awkwardness I found endearing. "Now, we wait. You will get your proof. In the mean time, I'm sure we can figure something out while we wait. Or we can just talk. Whatever you desire, it is your birthday, after all.
Y/N giggled and it was the most beautiful sound. "Is this your present to me? Making another guy jealous?"
I looked into her eyes. If only she knew the half of my feelings for her. "If that is what you desire."
I heard her gulp. Her thoughts were swirling with nerves, being alone with me was intense for her. She admitted in her mind finding me attractive, which was new. She usually fought such thoughts. She was screaming in her mind her desires, wishing to be close and touch me. Except I heard other thoughts. Less... pleasant ones in fact.
The soldier was listening.
I leaned closer to her and said loudly enough for him to hear. "Is this okay?" She looked confused so I whispered just loud enough for her to hear, "he's listening."
She sighed, moaned? I was unsure, really. All I know is the noise was a masterpiece of sound. "Yes, I like that." I couldn't fight grin listening to the various curses that spewed in his mind before he pounded on the door. Y/N jumped but had a smile across her face. "One minute!"
Before she got up I squeezed her hand. At least I was right.
She answered the door. "Oh, hey Buck, what's up?"
"Is Loki in here?" He asked, knowing the answer very well.
She opened her door so that he could look inside and see me, propped up on her bed. What a devilish move. I loved it. "Yeah, why do you need him?"
"No."
"Then how can I help you?" She questioned him, but he did not respond. "You know Loki reads minds, right? If you want I can just get him and he can tell me what it is you need." Oh, that a girl. She turned towards me but he grabbed her hand. I had to fight the urge to rip his arm off for touching her.
He sighed, "can we just talk...outside the room?" She nodded at him and smiled at me before leaving the room. I could hear bits of the conversation but decided to let them have it. I took off my shoes and laid under the cover of her bed while I waited.
After a few moments I heard her laughing. I was unsure of what sign it meant. When she came back into the room, her mind cluttered with recapping what just transpired.
"So date with Captain America, huh?"
She sat next to me, I tried to resist every urge to reach our and pull her close, "honestly, I don't know what happened. But I don't think that proved he likes me. So, at the very least I got to prove you wrong."
At that, I decided to stop resisting. I laughed, pulling her close to my chest and pushed her hair out of her face. "We'll see about that, my dear." I continued playing with her hair and took a risk "I'd like to stay the night here if you don't mind. It's either this or share a bed with my brother." I rolled my eyes for emphasis.
"So that's what this is all about? Using me for a bed to sleep in."
I laughed again. "Something like that." I had so many things to say but I was unsure how appropriate it would be. The look on her face showed she truly wanted to know however, so I let it out. "I don't mean to overstep, but something you said to Winter Soldier out there didn't sit right with me." The conversations heard in her head truly bothered me. She lifted her head to look at me and I continued. "You are nothing short of astounding. You could have anyone you wanted. Any mortal, super soldier, or god... would be blessed to have your company in any situation. Please never think anything less of yourself." I kissed her forehead and she laid her head on my chest. This was the perfect place to be.
"You can stay here tonight, Loki. I don't mind. And thank you. For everything." My heart felt like it tightened as she rested on me, I could feel her consciousness start to drift as she relaxed.
"Of course. Happy birthday, my dear."
When I awoke the next morning, Y/N was pressed against me. Her dress had slid up in the night, was now barely covering her behind. She looked calm and peaceful. I slipped away before she woke up, knowing she would have an eventful day. I walked back to Thor's room, thinking about her.
When I walked inside, Thor was waiting. "Oh, Loki! I wonder where you disappeared to last night." He said with his very obvious attempt at sarcasm.
"Relax, brother. I am only assisting Y/N in making the soldier jealous, since she doesn't believe he truly cares for her. They're a mess, honestly. I don't know why you love these 'Avengers' so much."
I definitely over explained. But Thor saw through right through my tough act, he typically has recently. After finding out he had Thanos did to me, to my mind... the relationship between us has improved.
"Of course, Loki." Thor winked before leaving me alone in his room. I summoned a book and prepared for a quiet day, hoping for a repeat of last night.
