Work Text:

Weep for yourself, my man
You'll never be what is in your heart

Wilbur watched as Schlatt took his country from him. The project he’d worked for months on, taken away from him in a stupid attempt to get his people to listen to him. Tommy was beside him, tugging on his sleeve. Then suddenly they were running, and Wilbur felt the arrow pierce his back. Collapsing on the floor, his eyes focused on the new president as anger filled his soul. He breathed once, and his heart fell silent.

Weep, little lion man
You're not as brave as you were at the start

Wilbur watched as Tommy ran around to the entrance of the hidden tunnel. He himself was crouching, hiding behind the wall, listening to Tubbo try to keep Schlatt away from their base. His thoughts were racing, trying to figure out how to get Schlatt away when his brain screeched to a halt.

“The coward won’t even come out and face me!”

Wilbur didn’t want to admit it. Although deep down, Wilbur knew he was right.

Rate yourself and rake yourself
Take all the courage you have left

“Let’s be the bad guys Tommy!” Wilbur yelled, his arms thrown out to the side. “There’s nothing left for me here anymore! Nothing to hold us back! Nothing’s stopping us from being the villains.” Tommy just stood there, for the first time in his life, he was terrified of his brother.

“There’s nothing stopping me“ Wilbur whispered before whipping back around to face Tommy, his hands clenching into fists.

“Let’s blow that motherfucker to smithereens!”

And waste it on fixing all the problems
That you made in your own head

Wilbur stood at the top of the roof, watching the proceedings of the festival. His eyes were on the - probably wasted - president of Manburg. Even the name felt disgusting on his tongue. Luckily it’d be gone soon, what with the whole place being rigged with TnT.

“And now, my dear right hand man, Tubbo…” Wilbur heard Schlatt start and - glancing once to the side to see Tommy once more before the bombs took him - Wilbur turned and walked off the building.

But it was not your fault but mine

Wilbur panicked as the button was yet to be found. Where is it?! Was the only thought running through his head as he sprinted side to side, throwing his fists into the mountain. Finally after a few more minutes of panic searching, he stopped. I’ve lost it. He thought, the sound of fireworks filling his ears.

And it was your heart on the line

Tommy stared at Wilbur, tears streaming down his face. “You promised he’d be okay!” He screamed at Wilbur, his body shaking and his hands clenched at his sides. “You said he wouldn’t be hurt!”

I really fucked it up this time

Wilbur held his head in his hands with his back against the wall. He’d failed, he’d lost the button and he failed. He scrubbed his face with his hands, pushing himself off the wall.

Plan B: War.

Didn't I, my dear?
Didn't I, my-

“Give me the TnT Wilbur.”

Tremble for yourself, my man
You know that you have seen this all before

Wilbur stood on the mountain, looking over Manburg. Tomorrow, he promised, tomorrow he’ll finally finish this symphony. His eyes scanned the land for the last time. They fell on Schlatt, who was standing on the podium, a drink in his hand. Schlatt tipped his drink at him, and Wilbur felt himself do a small salute back. He remembers this, somewhere else, where water took the whole world and Wilbur was on the only piece of land laughing at Schlatt down below, screaming as a creeper swam toward him slowly. A moment later, Schlatt turned and walked off the podium, leaving Wilbur with memories of water and laughter.

Tremble, little lion man
You'll never settle any of your scores

Techno clasped a hand on Wilbur’s shoulder. “Time for war.” He muttered, clasping his cape together with one hand.

Wilbur huffed a laugh, “Too bad I couldn’t ever beat you in a fight.”

“There’s still time?”

“Pay back Dream for me. Won’t you?”

Your grace is wasted in your face
Your boldness stands alone among the wreck

Wilbur stood on the bridge, the rest of Pogtopia jumping and laughing around him. “Wait!” Was yelled around the excited and laughing soldiers, “There’s a traitor here!”

“Who is it?!” Tommy yelled above the crowd.

Wilbur shrugged his shoulders and raised his hand.

Now learn from your mother or else
Spend your days biting your own neck

Wilbur charged forward, Phil’s words from his childhood circling in his head. “Fight for what you believe in my son. And you will do great things.” Wilbur thought of the TNT under him.

He knew it wasn’t the TNT Phil had been talking about.

But it was not your fault but mine

Wilbur fought, and watched as the rest of Pogtopia either fell or fell back. Wilbur shuddered as an arrow shot past his head. Still he pushed forward, pushing the guilt of bringing his friends into this out of his mind. It wasn’t his problem anymore.

And it was your heart on the line

Schlatt fell, his hand clutching his heart. Everyone was standing around him, and Wilbur thought of it as a sort of fucked up “dying surrounded by family” way. Wilbur just stared at him, good riddance.

I really fucked it up this time

Wilbur took the podium, smiling a dead looking smile. He heard himself announce Tommy as the new president, but his mind was somewhere else.

Didn't I, my dear?

He didn’t listen as Tommy immediately turned the presidency over to Tubbo. Vaguely registering what was happening as he disappeared to the back of the mountain.

But it was not your fault but mine

He finally got into the control room. The button taunting him from the other side of the room.

“What’re you doing Wilbur?”

And it was your heart on the line

“Phil?” Wilbur asked as he turned around. His father was staring him down from the doorway.

“Manburg huh?”

“Yeah! I mean technically-“

“Don’t do this Wilbur.”

I really fucked it up this time

Wilbur threw his arms out to the side. “I’ve been here too many times Phil! Too many times! And I’ve almost ended it too many times to count!”

Didn't I, my dear?

“You know Phil, there was a saying, said by a traitor named Eret once.”

Didn't I, my dear?

“Oh yeah?”

But it was not your fault but mine

Wilbur pressed the button. “It was never meant to be.”

And it was your heart on the line

Phil gaped at the hole in the wall. “Wilbur!” He yelled as he rushed forward, his eyes frantically searching for his other two sons.

I really fucked it up this time

“You actually did it.” Phil whispered.

Wilbur turned to Phil, his arms out to his side. His unfinished symphony behind him, finished on a screeching high note.

Didn't I, my dear?

“Kill me Phil! Kill me!”

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I, my dear?

He felt the blade pierce his body, Phil’s arms around him. “You’re my son.” Phil breathed, and Wilbur smiled.

“Thank you.”

Didn't I, my dear?
