“Emma?” Callie suggested, hoping to finally have found a name that her wife liked, too.
No such luck. She could tell by the way Arizona hesitated with her answer. She crossed the name off of the mental list she had made in her head before Arizona even said anything.
“I’ve treated, like, twelve kids named Emma in the past month” the blonde justified “It’s just way too common.”
Callie tipped her head back against the couch cushions, sighing in slight frustration. She couldn’t recall having such trouble finding a name for Sofia, but this time around it was a total nightmare.
“You’re a pediatric surgeon. If we rule out the name of every kid you have treated recently, our baby will be nameless forever. You vetoed Olivia, Mariana, and Charlotte” the brunette pointed out “Arizona, we only have eight weeks left to find a name. The perfect name. Do you see my problem?”
It was clear to Arizona that Callie was stressing out about baby names. Callie was stressing out about a lot of things. Only two nights ago, she had nearly lost her mind when she had woken up to her wife’s side of the bed empty after Arizona got up during the night to get a glass of water. A week ago, she nearly banned Arizona from using her prosthetic after she tripped (which only happened because Sofia always left her toy scattered around the whole house and not because Arizona happened to be an amputee). Not to mention the total meltdown Callie had when Arizona reached - and smoothly passed - the 24-week-mark.
“The only problem I see is you freaking out over this” Arizona pointed out, shifting into a more comfortable position on their living room couch.
At 32 weeks pregnant, that was easier said than done. Sometimes, her whole body ached and the added strain of wearing her prosthetic didn’t exactly make it easier for Arizona. It was worth it, though. In the end, they’d get to hold their beautiful daughter and they’d fall even more in love with her and their family would be perfect.
“I’m not freaking out” Callie insisted, almost pouting.
“You are” Arizona countered, gingerly taking her wife’s hand “And I get it. We have every reason to be worried because last time, things went horribly wrong and it was hard and scary and downright terrifying. But this time, everything is fine. We made it to 32 weeks and she’s still in there. I’d say that’s a pretty good sign.”
“How do you do that?” Callie asked, her thumb drawing random patterns over the back of Arizona’s hand.
Arizona’s brows furrowed in slight confusion. “How do I do what?” she inquired.
“How do you apparently not worry at all?” the brunette clarified “Is that some peds perk? Not freaking out over sick babies?”
Arizona almost chuckled dryly. Of course, she was worried. She was worried more often than not and the trauma of Sofia’s very premature birth and her fight for life still sat deep in Arizona’s mind. The pictures showed up in her mind every now and then - tiny Sofia, hooked up to a rainbow assortment of tubes and wires, machines working to help her stay alive before they could ever help her grow. The thought that it could happen again - that their baby girl could end up in the NICU - was a constant companion for Arizona. Whenever she entered the NICU, that thought flashed through her mind before anything else. Scratch that, wherever she went, that thought always came with her.
The blonde pursed her lips for a moment, unwilling to admit that. But she had to. For Callie.
“I’m worried all the time” she confessed “I’m worried all the time that something could happen but-”
“But what?” Callie cut in “Because obviously, you’re dealing with all this way better than I am.”
“But I try to focus on what we have right now” Arizona answered, already knowing it wasn’t a sufficient response.
Callie raised one of her eyebrows at her wife, urging her to continue her explanation.
“Right now, we have three ultrasounds without any signs of abnormalities. We have the amnio results that you wanted and they’re clean, too” the blonde went on “And if something really does happen, we have a whole hospital looking out for her. We own a hospital. Our baby has as much protection as she could possibly have.”
Before Callie could even answer, Arizona winced, huffing in obvious discomfort. It came out of nowhere and, hell, it scared the shit out of Callie.
“Arizona!” the brunette gasped, immediately sitting up straight and turning in her wife’s direction “Are you alright?” she asked, immense concern swinging in her voice.
Arizona nodded, resting one hand on her baby bump.
“I’m fine, I’m fine” she assured her worried wife “She’s just using my bladder as a trampoline and it’s really annoying.”
Callie relaxed a little, resting assured that right now, nothing was obviously wrong with her wife and baby.
“But see?” Arizona then added “We also have that. We have her adorable flips and flutters. She’s kicking, as healthy babies should.”
She reached out for Callie’s hand again, placing it on her belly where she had last felt their daughter’s movements. It didn’t take long for Baby Robbins-Torres to make herself known again with a few kicks and punches against her mama’s palm.
Callie’s eyes lit up with excitement at the sensation and Arizona couldn’t help but fall more and more in love with her. There was something so special about feeling the baby move around and seeing Callie in awe over it was the cherry on top. It was simply magical.
“This never gets old” Callie softly said, brushing her thumb against the fabric of Arizona’s shirt “Is she still doing backflips?”
Arizona chuckled, resting her hand on top of Callie’s. “I think she’s running out of space for that. It’s uncomfortable.”
Callie gave her a sympathetic smile. “Only eight more weeks” she reminded her “You can handle eight more weeks.”
“I can handle eight more weeks” Arizona agreed, leaning her head on Callie’s shoulder, their hands still resting on her belly and occasionally feeling their unborn daughter kick.
After a couple of seconds of comfortable silence, Arizona turned to face her wife.
“What about Clara?” she asked, her lips curling into a small smile at the sudden idea for a name. It came out of the blue, but Arizona instantly fell in love with it.
“Still with Danielle as a middle name?” Callie asked.
Arizona nodded. “Do you like it?” she wanted to know.
“Clara Danielle Robbins-Torres” Callie mused “I love it. It’s beautiful.”
Arizona beamed at her wife. “Our baby has a name” she said.
“Our baby has a name” Callie repeated, matching Arizona’s smile before she leaned in for a gentle kiss.
“Hello there, Clara” Arizona whispered after their lips parted, looking down at her belly, protectively running her hand over it “We can’t wait to meet you.”
“We really can’t” Callie added, wrapping her arms around her wife “But we’ll wait as long as you make us do, Miss Clara.”
