Work Text:
For as long as he can remember Stiles has been made fun of for a crush on a girl he had stopped liking long ago and everyone still believes he has for some reason. The girl in question was one Lydia Martin. And while Stiles still appreciates how smart and beautiful Lydia is he is no longer interested in getting to know her as anything but a friend.
You see a few months after Stiles got over his crush on Lydia he started to notice how pretty boys were too. He had noticed it before but it was in a different light now. And it was really weird when he started to feel how he had at one time felt for Lydia towards his best friend, Derek Hale. Only it was stronger.
Later after a thorough and slightly scaring internet search, Stiles learned he was bisexual. He had also learned that he was into more into guys than he was into girls.
Throughout middle and a good portion of high school, despite him being blatantly not into her, Stiles would hear the occasional comment on him being stupid enough for thinking that he could ever be with The Lydia Martin. He didn't know exactly what people meant by ‘someone like him’ he just knew it was never good.
Those comments came from just about everyone except for Derek. In fact, most of the time Derek would get pissed off at people for making comments like that and would usually threaten the person who said it with some form of bodily harm. He even followed through with said threats once of twice when Jackson Whittemore, Lydia’s neanderthal of a boyfriend, thought that Stiles had hit on his girlfriend (all he did was say ‘hi’ and wave) and was making comments about ‘making him pay’.
All the protection that Derek provided Stiles when the fellow teenager both was and wasn't around (no matter how hard Derek tried to keep it a secret from his friend, Stiles always found out) had only made Stiles’ feelings for him grow even more.
In their junior year Derek came out to Stiles as pansexual. Fully accepting his best friend, Stiles felt comfortable telling Derek that he himself was bisexual. At this point in time the only person he had told about his sexuality was his father the year before.
To say Derek was supportive would be a very large understatement. After Stiles had finished regaling the other boy with his tail of how he discovered he was bisexual Derek had all bit jumped him. Stiles had been more than okay with the turn of events considering he had been in love with Derek since before the short time he had liked Lydia. Even if he didn't know it.
Afterwards the two were very, very public about their relationship. It got to the point that their other friends became rather vocal on how the pair made them want to barf. Most people, other than Stiles and Derek's friends apparently, had been surprised to learn about the couple’s relationship. Those who weren't surprised were either jealous or angry that Stiles of all people got to be with Derek. Stiles had never been more happy than when he saw the looks of contempt on several people's faces whenever Stiles was with Derek.
The two had their ups and downs of course. Some of the larger ones were based on Stiles worries that Derek would one day leave him for one of the many people that had offered to take Stiles’ place. It was the biggest cause behind their more serious fights. But even with that they never broke up, not once.
Over the years they were a lot of each other’s firsts. First kiss. First (and only) relationship. First sexual experience. And as time grew on they became even more of each other's firsts.
Several people throughout the two’s relationship had made attempts to be with Derek or replace Stiles, a few had even attempted to do the same with Stiles instead. Several people had also told Stiles that he wasn't good enough for Derek in some capacity or another. And though it did hurt some, Stiles eventually learned to tune it out and not care.
If one of the greatest and most handsome men on the earth said that Stiles was it for them. Well, then, that was okay with him
