Work Text:

Yuri had a day off from training. He felt ready for his next competition and Yakov wanted him to work on his schoolwork. Yuri usually had a tutor that came over to help him, but today he was in his room working alone, studying what he had seen with his tutor the last time he had come over. Victor and Yuuri were at the rink. They didn’t have a day off and they left this morning with a smile in his direction and wishes for him to have a good day.

Yuri thought they both looked a little more tired than usual, but let it go. Maybe they didn’t sleep well the night before and everything will be fine by the time they’ll come back to the apartment at the end of the afternoon.

Yuri was focused on his computer, a steaming cup of tea on his desk. He had plugged his phone into his sound system in his room so he could listen to soft music while he studied. Potya was sleeping on his pillow on his bed. Makkachin was laying at his feet.

Yuri’s bubble of concentration was popped by the sound of the front door opening and closing sharply. Yuri jumped in his seat and looked away from his screen with a frown. It wasn’t like Yuuri and Victor to be this harsh while entering the apartment. Makachin stood up at the sound and exited Yuri’s room. Probably going to his humans’ side. While exiting the room Makachin left the door more opened than closed and Yuri could hear Yuuri and Victor. He couldn’t really make out their words, but the tone of their voices sounded like they were arguing. Yuri's frown deepened. He had never heard Yuuri and Victor argue before. Most of the time they were so in love it was almost painful to watch them interact.

Yuri lowered the sound of his music to hear better. It was probably to eavesdrop, but Yuri wanted to know what was going on.

“Well, sorry for having a bad day!” He heard Yuuri exclaimed.

“We’re so close to the next competition!” Victor argued back. “It’s not the time to have a bad day!”

Yuri gasped at what he just heard. They were really arguing. From the sound of it, probably about something that happened at practice today. Worry bubbled in Yuri’s stomach. Yuuri sounded like he was about to cry, and Victor sounded like he was all out of patience. What was going on? It wasn’t like Victor to snap at his fiancé like that.

“My anxiety is acting up and I woke up feeling like shit this morning Victor! I’m trying my best here!” Yuuri’s voice sounded watery and so tired.

It was easier for Yuri to hear them. They must be in the kitchen now.

“I thought we were done with this anxiety thing.” Victor said with an exasperated sigh.

Yuri tightened his fist at Victor’s words. Victor was usually so good and supportive when Yuuri’s anxiety was acting up. The older skater must be tired too if he was snapping like that. Yuuri’s anxiety was more generalized than his own, but Yuri could still kind of understand how Yuuri was feeling. He didn’t need his fiancé’s harsh words at the moment.

“That’s the thing, Victor! I’ll probably never be done with this anxiety thing! You usually understand that. Can I have my fiancé instead of my coach?” Yuuri sounded almost desperate.

Yuri didn’t dare breathe as he waited for Victor’s answer. The silence only stretched and then he heard movements.

“Where are you going?” Yuuri asked.

“I can’t switch my mood just like that Yuuri. I’m going on a walk with Makkachin. It’s that or I’ll end up saying something I’ll regret.” Victor said.

Yuri heard the characteristic jingle of Makkachin’s leash and the door opening and closing again. The apartment was plunged in silence after Victor left.

Yuri waited for a few more minutes. There was still no sound. Yuri got up from his desk chair and pushed his bedroom door open. He hated that his hands were shaking. He couldn’t wrap his head around what had just happened. Victor and Yuuri never fought.

Yuri peaked around in the hallway, and he didn’t see the older skater. The door of his and Victor’s room was open, and the lights were off. Yuri walked around the apartment in search of Yuuri. He tried to walk as silently as he could as to not break the atmosphere the apartment was in.

He found Yuuri in the living room, sitting on the couch with his up to his chest and his arms wrapped around them. He was looking at the wall in front of him, but Yuri wasn’t sure he was seeing anything at all.

Yuri approached slowly and sat on the couch next to the older skater. Yuuri didn’t even acknowledge his presence. Yuri stole a glance at the black-haired man and saw his glazed stare. Some unshed tears in his eyes. The sight made him panic a little. He didn’t really know how to comfort him or where to start. Yuuri had been the one comforting him when he was in a similar state up to now. Yuri was tempted to be angry at Victor. The silver-haired man was supposed to be the one to help Yuuri in those times. He had the most experience in doing it and probably the person Yuuri was yearning for anyway. What had happened at the rink today for them to end up like that?

Yuri shifted in his seat and the couch made a creaking noise. It seemed way louder than it was since it was so silent in the living room. Yuuri flinched at the noise and snapped his head in Yuri’s direction. He blinked slowly a few times, the motion freeing a lonely tear that slid down his cheek.

“Oh… Yuri.” Yuuri said with a hoarse voice. “I… Did you… Did you hear that?” He asked with a trembling voice.

Yuri nodded. He didn’t trust his voice to be steady at the moment. His lower lip was already trembling a little. He couldn’t help but fear the worst. He was finally happy and feeling safe in a house again. He had a good support system and a few friends outside of skating. It was probably selfish of him to like that at this moment, but if Victor and Yuuri broke up he wondered what would happen to him.

“I’m sorry you had to hear that.” Yuuri said in a whisper.

“You don’t have to apologize.” Yuri said in the same tone. “Feelings and emotions can be messy. I learned that recently.”

Yuuri let a small smile tug his lips before smoothing down again. Yuri reached out his hand slowly and he squeezed Yuuri’s shoulder softly.

“What happened? Everything seemed fine this morning.” Yuuri looked away at these words. “I mean, if you don’t want to talk about it that’s fine too.” Yuri added.

Yuuri sighed and brought his eyes back on Yuri. “We’ve been tensed for the past week. I guess today was just too much. Victor has a lot on his shoulders. He’s training for his own routines, but he also has to coach me. I’ve been restless all week long and I didn’t sleep a lot these past few days. I’ve messed up more than usual today and Victor’s patience is wearing thin.” Yuuri explained.

“I don’t get it. Victor is usually very comprehensive of your anxiety.” Yuri said with a frown.

“Yeah. Well, he’s under a lot of pressure and sometimes as hard as people try, they snap.”

“But… he left.” Yuri said with a small voice.

“He’ll be back. Sometimes it’s good to put a little distance when you’re too wrapped up in the conflict. We can both reflect on what happened and it keeps us from saying things we would regret afterward.” Yuuri said.

“Victor still said something insensitive.” Yuri said the hand he had on Yuuri’s shoulder started trembling a little again.

“Yes, and he realized it. He’ll probably apologize when he comes back from clearing his head. We’ll both apologize to each other.”

“So… You’re not breaking up?” Yuri asked looking at the black-haired skater with wide pleading eyes.

Yuuri’s eyes widened in surprise, and he unwrapped his arms from around his knees so he could throw them around Yuri in a tight hug. Yuri wrapped his own arms around Yuuri,s shoulders and let out a shaky sigh as he burrowed his face in Yuuri’s neck.

“No, we’re not breaking up. Sometimes people have disagreements. It doesn’t mean we love each other any less.” Yuuri said his voice resonating in Yuri’s ear. “I’m sorry we scared you.”

“You don’t have to apologize. I’m the one who imagined the worst.” Yuri said his voice muffled. “I just kept thinking that if you guys broke up you’ll go back to Japan and I wouldn’t see you every day anymore and I’ll probably have to go back to Yakov’s house and I don’t want that. I’m happy here! With you! With the both of you!”

“Hey…” Yuuri interrupted him before he could spiral even further in his own mind. “It’s going to be ok Yuri. Even if Victor and I broke up that wouldn’t mean I would cut every tie with you.” Yuuri reassured him.

“But you’re not breaking up?” Yuri asked again just to be sure, tightening his hold on Yuuri.

“No, we’re not.” Yuuri said as he shifted and pressed a kiss to Yuri’s forehead.

Yuri sighed in relief and loosened his hold on the other skater a little. They were still hugging, but they both shifted until they were in a more comfortable position.

That was how Victor found them when he came back home with Makkachin fifteen minutes later. He unleashed the dog and put everything back in its place before entering the living room. Both occupants of the couch looked up at him. Victor crouched in front of the couch so he could be at eye level with the two.

“I’m sorry for what I said earlier Yuuri. I didn’t mean it. I was stressed and tense, and I took it out on you. That wasn’t fair.” He said as he looked his fiancé in the eyes.

Yuri got out of Yuuri’s arms so the two adults could speak. He still stayed seated next to Yuuri. If they didn’t want him there while they spoke, they would tell him.

“I’m sorry too. I should’ve told you I wasn’t feeling well before it escalated to this. I’m sorry I took my insecurities out on you.” Yuuri said.

They both reached for each other at the same time. Victor hugged Yuuri close to his chest. Yuuri’s had a tight hold on his fiancé, and he let out a relieved giggle when Victor peppered kisses on every part of his face he could reach.

Yuri smiled at the display. He was usually teasing them about their over-the-top affection, but today, after the fear he felt, he didn’t want to spoil it.

They finally broke the hug and Victor glanced at Yuri. He smiled at the blond and reached to him and ruffled his hair.

“Sorry about all that Yuri.” Victor apologized. “It must have been hard for you too.”

“It’s ok. I’m just glad you’re both ok.” Yuri admitted.

Victor's smile widened and he lunged himself on the couch. Wrapping both Yuuri and Yuri in his arms. Yuuri laughed at his fiancé’s antics and hugged them back. Yuri pretended to be annoyed and said they were holding him too tightly and he couldn’t breathe. They all knew he didn’t mean that. Even when said that he didn’t try to get out of their hold. He was just happy his family was ok.
