    Summary

“May I put to you an indelicate question, Mr. Hodgson?” Jopson asks after a pause. “Pray, do not be offended. But we are isolated here for a reason, spoken ill of by the villagers for a reason. And so it is as, perhaps, a friend with similarly queer predilections—and therefore as an ally—that I ask: are you and this John Irving terribly intimate with one another?”

“I’m quite sure I don’t know what you mean,” George returns, blushing madly.

“You know, sir, precisely what I mean,” Jopson answers. “You are among sympathetic friends.”

George shakes his head. “I do not believe—he is terribly opposed, you see, to such things. My little chaste monk. I call him that, even, and threaten to cut his hair into a tonsure some night while he sleeps. He does not find this terribly funny.” He picks up a vol-au-vent and blows on it, suddenly feeling quite melancholy. “He does not find many things terribly funny.”
