Goodbye

Summary:

Sometimes saying goodbye is harder when there are things left unsaid.

Or:

A simple meteor shower on my island wasn't the only event that went on that day.

Notes:

So I love watching my villagers interact with each other. Sometimes I like to imagine that some of them are dating or there is drama going on behind the scenes. Awhile ago Grizzly left my island and Olive was the person I saw him with the most so this story came to mind. Hope you enjoy it!

Work Text:

Olive stared out her window at the water. The sun shone down on the waves making them throw rainbows everytime the wind stirred up the water. Normally on a day like today she would be out wandering the island, talking with the other islanders or just enjoying the sunshine.

Today though she found herself with a heavy feeling in her heart.

Today was the day Grizzly would be leaving the island.

Being one of the oldest villagers you would think she was used to watching others leave. It rarely happened that someone left but it still did. This was different though. This wasn’t just anyone else, this was Grizzly.

Olive could remember the day he had moved in. A gruff, big bear that didn’t seem to suit the peaceful atmosphere of the island. It became apparent that beneath his looks was a kind soul, one that she found herself becoming familiar with. Soon they were exchanging greetings as they passed each other, sometimes stopping to talk.

Olive knew right away when she started developing feelings for the other bear.

It had started slow at first with her feeling a twinge in her heart when she saw him talking to the other villagers. Specifically Anabelle.

Then it began building into an almost overpowering feeling that seemed to burn in her chest whenever they were together.

She had wanted to tell him. The words threatened to leap out of her chest whenever she met him around the island.

It just never seemed to be the right time.

Now Olive regretted never letting those words free. It was too late now, and there was only one thing left to do.

Put on a smile and wave as the person she cared for the most left.

The walk to the airport had never felt so long and short at the same time. When she arrived everyone was already there, and at the center of them all was Grizzly. He seemed somewhat embarrassed as everyone gathered around him. Some of the villagers were crying as they said their final goodbyes, others were laughing as they wished him well.

Olive slammed her true feelings down as she smiled and said goodbye.

Sooner then she would have liked the time had come. Grabbing the lone suitcase that sat on the dock, Grizzly gave them all one final wave before heading into the airport.
Not two minutes later the seaplane roared to life carrying Grizzly away. Once it was out of sight the other villagers all left, going about their day as normal. Olive found herself rooted to the same spot, her eyes refusing to leave the spot where she had last seen the plane.

It wasn’t until night had begun to settle over the island that she finally moved.

Beginning the slow trek back to her house Olive placed a hand to her chest where the pain was the sharpest. As she passed the town hall however she couldn’t help but notice someone standing in the middle of it.

Marrow, the island representative.

As she watched she noticed the other islander look up at the sky. Curious she turned her attention the same way and felt a sense of wonder as shooting stars began to streak across the darkened sky.

For a moment she forgot the pain in her chest as her eyes tried to follow each star. Looking back over at Marrow, Olive was a little surprised to find her eyes closed and hands clasped in front of her. It took a second for Olive to realize what the other was doing. Making a wish.

It was only a moment before Olive found herself doing the same thing.

‘I wish that Grizzly, wherever he goes, will be happy, and that one day this pain will go away.’

Once she was done Olive felt the pain lighten. It was still there, and would be for a long time. Now though she found herself smiling as she looked over at Marrow one last time. The other noticed her looking and waved. Olive waved back before continuing on her way home.
