Chapter Text
Once Sam left for college he knew things would be different. He still loved his brother and his da-… he still loved his brother. But he needed a life, not just living a short one putting his life on the line everyday.
So he left, went off to Stanford. For 2 years he talked to Dean, listened to Deans drunk messages, and his sober ones. Then all of a sudden, Dean stopped calling. It got Sam worried at first, but he snapped himself out of it. Deans a big boy, maybe he finally realized he need to do things on his own.
Sam met Jessica a week after that. She was smart, beautiful, anything a guy could ever want. Sam told her about the life and she understood. He got caught up in school work, his social life, and his love life.
2 years.
2 whole years went by.
Sam thought about Dean, every now and again. But he never thought to send a text, or try to call.
(Present Day)
After a long night of celebrating Sams High LSAT. Him and Jess were back at their apartment.
“I think I’m gonna get a shower and go to bed.”
“Okay just make sure to wash all that smartness away!” He looked back at Jess,
“How does that-“
“Just go get a shower Sam.” She said waving him away
He laughed as he walked down the hallway, how did he get so lucky.
Just as Sam was about to step in Jess called his name.
“Uhhhh Sam!”
“What Jess I have like one foot in the shower!”
“Well I’d put a rob on and get out here!”
“Jess I-“
“GET OUT HERE NOW SAM WINCHESTER!”
It took a lot for Jess to yell so he sighed put a robe on and walked out into the living room. “Jess this better be important-“ He looked up from the floor to see his brother.
“Hiya Sammy.” Dean had rips in his t-shirt and ash all over his face. He had burn marks up and down his legs from what you could see from inside the holes in his jeans.
“Dean, what- um- what are you doing here?!”
“Sammy uh…” he looked over at Jess and smiled,”Can I talk to you in private?”
Sam was still in shock saying that he’s not talked to his brother in 2 years. And he shows up burned and bloody. He looked at Jess and then at his brother who was visibly shaking.
“Uh Dean just calm down.” Sam went over to walk his brother over to the couch.
Sam sat across from him, “Do you mind if she stays, listen this is my girlfriend Jess. She’s very understanding and knows about everything we do so just explain what happened.”
Dean looked up at them, looking like a lost puppy or a child. “Sammy, he’s back. The man who killed mom he’s back.”
Sam laughed, actually laughed, “Dean when’s the last time you drank maybe you should sit down and relax-“
“He killed dad.”
Silence filled the room. “Me and Dad were in a huge fight, it got physical at one point. Dad held a gun to my head for crying out loud.” He laughed to himself, “Wouldn’t have been the first time though would it have?”
Dean looked up at his younger brother and Jess. They both were in shock Jess had tears pooling in her eyes and had her hands on Sams shoulders. Dean could tell why Sam liked her, hell she never even knew their dad and was crying.
The older Winchester looked back down at his hands, “I walked out of the room, saying this is why you left. Why you haven’t texted in months.” He let out a soft sob, “When I walked back in the room a man with yellow eyes was holding Dad up on the ceiling, saying this was my fault. I’m the reason for all of this, my mothers death, and now my fathers. I watched Dad burn on the ceiling just like mom. Dad didn’t scream, didn’t beg, he just let it happen. The room collapsed on me and I couldn’t find his body.”
Sam and Jess looked at each other, “Dean oh my god.”
The elder Winchester choked out another sob, “What if it was my fault Sammy!?”
Sam and Jess hugged him. They sat on the coach just the 3 of them. Letting the noise of Deans stuffy nose trying to get out air fill the silence.
Sam pulled away from the hug, “Wait you were the one who didn’t text for 2 years what happened then?”
Dean looked at Sam, out of all that, Dean pouring his heart out. Welp, “Dad threatened to shoot me, I went to go send you a text in secret once and he found me. Shot me in the arm.”
Sams anger was through the roof. He already hated his father enough, but this was just the icing on top. If anything the mother fucker got what was coming to him.
Dean got up from the couch, “Sam you need to help me find the yellow eyed demon you have no idea what else he can do. What if he comes for you or for crying out loud Jess!”
“Calm down Dean. Do you really think it’s worth it? He has already killed both our parents the demon got what he wanted.”
The elder Winchester was taken aback. “Sam did you just hear yourself? Don’t you wanna get to the bottom of this?!”
Sam stood up,”No Dean I don’t, I have something good going here. I’m working towards being a lawyer, getting a family. I have my life ready. The hunting thing is your gig, not mine.”
Dean couldn’t believe what he was hearing, maybe John was right about Sam.
Hell.
That asshole was right.
“You know what FINE… son of a bitch. Have fun living your apple pie life, l’ll just find our mother and fathers killer on my own. I don’t need you! Jess it was nice meeting you.” Dean walked over to the door, “Have a nice life Sammy, I hope it was worth it.” He slammed the door behind him.
Jess came over and pushed Sam, “What is wrong with you Sam! Do you have any sort of feeling for anyone other than yourself? I know what your dad did was bad, but that was all Dean had left because he had lost you. Because you couldn’t send one text.” She went to their bedroom and shut the door behind her.
Sam knew he was an asshole but he wasn’t getting back into the business. No he wouldn’t be dragged in again. Dean would get over this, send him a text probably asking for money or something. Everything was gonna be fine.
