Summary
The world has been saved, yet again, but this time, Dean is forced to carry on without his best friend. His best friend, who loved him. In true Winchester fashion, Dean decides to shove down and bury his feelings about the last words that Cas said to him and the implications thereof. Instead he buries himself in alcohol, hunting, and stupid ass decisions. After a failed rescue attempt in the Empty, he’s forced to reassess what his life looks like without the angel. Until, one day, a run of the mill hunt goes wrong because of a small bit of rebar.
Castiel somehow awakens in the Empty, much to the Shadow’s ever growing annoyance. After making a deal to return to Earth to find Dean in exchange for his grace, Cas finds himself in the same room he last saw the man. He’s devastated to discover that he’s too late, Dean is dead and in Heaven. Realizing there's no point to coming back to a world without Dean, Cas goes to Heaven to speak with Jack in hopes of figuring out a way to get back to Dean and actually stay around. Of course, it's more complicated than they expect.
Dean and Cas are desperate to find their way back to each other, but the universe seems to be working hard to keep them apart.

Summary
What begins as a standard hunt for Castiel and his adoptive children, Jack and Claire, becomes a rescue mission when they find a man named Dean and a girl named Kaia being menaced by mysterious shadow creatures.
It soon becomes apparent that the creatures have a personal connection to both Dean and Castiel. To solve the case, the two of them must set aside their mutual suspicion and animosity… and find out if there is a future for them beyond the hunt.

Summary
After the events of 11x23, Dean and Mary Winchester miss Cas at the bunker by a mere few minutes. Believing that Dean is dead, Cas goes to rescue Sam from the BMoL and brings in a few allies to help. After Sam’s rescue, Castiel and Sam talk, and grieve. When they do go home, Dean and Cas’s reunion goes a bit differently.

Summary
What does John see when he looks at Cas?
Cas doesn’t look like a monster.
But neither does Dean.
John stands, slow. He holds out a hand. Calloused like Dean’s hands are calloused. Scarred the same way that Dean’s hands are scarred. There’s the smell of him in the air too. Earthy and dark, slightly sour around the edges. The room feels suddenly choked with it. Claustrophobic.
Cas probably smells like the fabric softener they buy in bulk at Costco, but so does Dean so he can’t tell.
John says, toneless, “I hear you’ve been driving my car.”

The closer you are to what you want—
Dean's twenty-nine year old mother, his undefined relationship with Cas and their small family. Some kind of impossible reconciliation with John Winchester. Michael, out of his head, without destroying the world. His father's approval. To see the Grand Canyon.
