i. 2008
when you were a kid
you thought love didn’t exist
how could it when it kept failing
both you and your family
you were held together by
duct tape and perseverance
while they just got to walk away.
ii. 2011
when you were a kid
you met a boy
well, that’s not entirely true
you met three boys
but this one was loud
and he was vibrant
and he scared you.
iii. 2014
when you were a kid
you got to travel the world
but even when alone, everything
felt like a performance
but he was there too
just as anxious as you
but still surviving.
iv. 2015
when you were a kid
you watched him get burned
and it’s something you’ll never forget
but he sat there
in all that pain
and reached for you
to let you know he was still there.
v. 2017
when you were a kid
the world looked at you
and picked you apart
and didn’t put you back together
but he was still there
falling apart
but working with you.
vi. 2020
you’re no longer a kid
and you think you might believe in love
because there’s this boy
with a brilliant, shining personality
who tells you he loves you
and he’ll never walk away
and you believe him.
