Summary
The first time Calum Hood shows up on his doorstep, it’s the last thing Ashton expects. He’s as unprepared for it as he would be for a snowstorm in the middle of the summer. That’s what Calum is to him that night. A storm coming to disturb his peaceful life, filling him with adrenaline and a bit of fear at the uncertainty of what could happen.

“What's wrong, Cal?” Michael asks, gently, and when Calum just shrugs again, Michael finds himself shuffling until he's seated beside him, side flush and warm against his, and fingers wrapped loosely around Calum's sweater-covered arm.
He stays like this a while, watching Calum's profile and shaggy hair, his own face squished against Calum’s bony shoulder. It's maybe not the most comfortable position, but Michael makes no complaints, happy to be around Calum again finally.

Summary
Sometimes, Calum will try to picture it. The bad. He'll take off his clothes and stand in front of his mirror for hours on end, and try to understand what it feels like, to look at your body and not recognize yourself.
He'll map out the lines of his shoulders or hips with his hands, feel his flat chest or the curve of his arms and stare at what's between his legs. Spend countless minutes that often turn into hours wondering what it's like to look at all of this and want to scream until your throat is sore and you can't feel anything.

When Michael breaks up with him without an explanation, Calum is left confused as he tries to pick up the pieces. He just doesn't realise they're not meant to be put back together the same way.

It doesn’t take him long to find Ashton. He’s sitting along the stream, toes dipping in the calm water. The moon casts a light so gentle over his profile that Michael’s breath almost catches in his chest. They’re a long way from the time they fell in love, but in moments like these, when it’s the middle of the night and Ashton’s features and whole demeanour radiate youth and innocence, it feels like the first time Michael looked at him and realised he hadn’t thought of him as a friend in a long time.

Summary
Ashton looks neither of those things as he toes off his shoes and removes his cardigan. The heat in his eyes is so potent Calum’s heart rate speeds up instantly, hands wet and not from his shower. And yet there’s a nervous streak to the way Ashton stands, guard down in a way that’s obviously uncomfortable, like he’s expecting Calum to go sit down on the bed and turn on the TV.
Truthfully, it’s what Calum should do. He’s been aching to talk to Ashton all day, and he knows what he needs to tell Ashton is that it was fun, it was fucking mindblowing, but it can’t happen again. To preserve their friendship so that there’s no chance it gets tainted by potentially ugly situations, but most importantly, to preserve his own heart.

“Ashton, he showed you his new song.” And okay, Calum doesn’t need to explain it any further for Ashton to know what that means. Michael is always so reluctant to show the words in his head, because they’re a little darker and deeper and colder than the other boys’ writing, but Michael came to Ashton without a second thought. He knows what that means.
