Work Text:

"Breakfast is ready," Shin said, taking off the cute apron that Sara had bought him a few weeks ago. He rejected it at first, but after seeing the face Sara put on when he did, he started wearing it. It’s been about four months since they’ve moved in together, along with Kanna.

"Wow Shin, you've improved a lot," Sara said, amazed at how proficient the young man had become at cooking. "It feels like yesterday when you told me you'd just eat cup noodles every day."

"Ah, that was during that time…" They both knew what he was talking about. The death game. Sara and Shin had been part of the few survivors, and they’ve grown closer because of it. "I'd rather not think of the past."

"That's okay, it’s all behind us now."

Kanna had walked into the kitchen and sat at the table, gawking at her brother's incredible dedication. Eggs and bacon, way less burnt than they had been months prior.

"Kanna is so impressed… did big bro really cook this?" She said, teasingly.

"Yeah, this time I didn't burn the eggs…" Shin said, proud of his work but grimacing as he remembered how horrible his cooking was before. He really had come a long way. "In any case, you should eat more, you're supposed to be growing."

"Kanna eats lots! Kanna loves big bro's cooking," she said, grabbing a spoonful of the food he had prepared.

Compared to the lonely life Shin had been going through before the death game, this was way better. They had a stable income, he was reunited with his sister, and together with a freshly graduated Sara, who had turned eighteen a couple days after the incident that brought them together. There were no more lonely nights, no more nights of stale cup ramen. The apartment was filled with those he loved, and he couldn’t ask for anything more.

Once they had finished eating, everyone stood up and got ready for their day. Shin collected all their dishes and placed them in the sink. He pushed the sleeves of his sweater up and got to washing.

"Kanna is off to school!" She turned around to face them before leaving, her face wide with a smile. Shin and Sara smiled back, feeling oddly parental to the green haired girl. She waved goodbye and left, leaving Sara and Shin alone.

"Miss Sara?"

The brunette looked over to Shin, who was currently scrubbing the dishes.

"Do you have any time today? I'd like to relax with you some… if possible…"

Sara looked at him, a small smile on her face. "Of course. We can watch something if you'd like, but this time I choose."

"Alright!"

Shin felt all his efforts as a homemaker be rewarded. He loved their quality time together. It was strange at first, him staying at home instead of going to work. Sara had somehow managed to land a very well paying job, which encouraged him to stay home. He learned to love it however, and found it much more fulfilling than his work at the convenience store. Especially if it was for someone like Sara.

Come the evening, Sara had gotten back from work and Shin was ready to cuddle with his lovely partner. Kanna had come to join them in the living room, all three enjoying each other’s company as they watched their movie. Shin was being spooned by Sara, and Kanna had opted to lay on the floor with her pillows and blankets. Shin had made snacks for them, bowls of popcorn and chips so they could all enjoy as they watched.

Once the movie was over, seeing how late it was, the two sent Kanna off to bed with a good night. They stayed up some, watching whatever was on TV. Shin loved the feeling of being wrapped up in Sara’s arms, having come to enjoy the safety they brought him. All the warmth and the heartbeat of his love was slowly lulling him to sleep.

"Ahh… I'm tired." Shin let out a yawn. "We should get some sleep."

"Alright."

Sara moved a bit, Shin grabbing onto her as she picked him up and got off the couch. She carried him to bed and the two got under the covers, snuggling together.

She kissed him on the cheek. "Goodnight."

"G...night…" Shin said, before falling asleep like a log. The soft rising and falling of his chest confirmed that he was knocked out.

Sara stayed awake for a few minutes. Once she confirned that Shin was asleep, she started crying. Silent tears fell down her cheeks, and she cried quietly. She couldn’t wake him up. So Sara sobbed to herself, hoping not to wake up her beloved.

Eventually she'd have to tell Shin the truth. That the Kanna that was living with them was just a doll. That she forcefully wiped his memories of her causing the real one's death. That the real Kanna was gone.
