Work Text:

She hates Maya Bishop.

She hates her with all her heart.

Well, that's not really true, she loves her, but right now? She HATES her.

Because this is all Maya's fault.

How can this small blonde firefighter easily walk into her life with those beautiful blue eyes and ruin her life?

That's a little too dramatic.

But Maya definitely ruins her night now.

And she hates it.

"Arghhhh!!" She yelled to the pillow, frustrated, but mostly scared.

Damn those blue eyes and charming smile!

Tonight she hates her.

"Come on! It's October!"

Carina rolled her eyes, taking a second to reply. She can't believe that she has to even take a second to reply. It should be a hard NO from the start. "So? What's so special about October?"

"It's the Halloween season! We HAVE to watch some classic horror movies. It's like the law here" There she is, with those wide blue eyes, pleading with the biggest pout. She's so adorable, how can you say no to that? Damn you, Maya Bishop.

"I'm gonna regret this" Carina sighed her reply and turned around to continue preparing dinner for the night.

She's stirring the pot when she feels a hand wrapped around her waist. "You're not gonna regret it. It's going to be so much fun" Maya said with a kiss on the shoulder.

She regretted it.

She never regretted anything more than watching horror movies with Maya.

And yes, movie(s)! Because that psychopath decided it's no fun if they only watched one movie.

She regretted saying yes to her lovely wife. (Now that she thinks about it, maybe Maya's not so lovely after all)

And the worst part? Today Maya is having a 24 hours shift. Which means she has to spend the night alone. Just a day after their movie marathon. GREAT!

She's tossing in bed nonstop. All she can think about is the scene where the protagonist was home alone while the intruder watched every move, and eventually killed that poor woman.

Now suddenly, she feels like she has a superpower. But not the kind of superpower that can help her from a sociopathic intruder. It's a superpower that makes her more and more anxious. Super hearing. Because now she can hear every. single. thing. She swears she can hear someone's breathing and mumbling. Or maybe it's just her imagination (well at least that's what she convinced herself ANYWAY)

She tries to call Maya, but it keeps sending her to voicemail. She must've been on a call. Damn Maya!

Suddenly her heart stops because she hears something. Like someone is playing with the door handle. She prays that it's only her imagination.

But it's not.

Why?

Because she can still hear the voice.

Panic fills her trembling body. Suddenly the air feels too cold.

No! She can't die like this. She imagines that she'll die in Maya's arms when they are both grey and old. Eyes full of love with promises that they will see each other again in the afterlife if that even exists.

She doesn't want to die like this. In the hand of some scary serial killer.

No! No way!

She doesn't even think. She jumps out of bed and runs towards the front door, grabbing the biggest umbrella she has. She holds it so high like she's about to hit a homerun, mumbling a silent prayer to God or whoever is the higher power up there.

Seconds later the door flies open and Carina immediately lunches forward, unleashing her frustration and fright.

"ARRRGGGHHH!!!" She hits and hits and hits, hoping that the intruder dies first.

"AWW! AWW! WHAT THE.."

Wait, that sounds familiar.

She stops hitting and opens her eyes, tilting her head in question, "Maya?"

"Well, duh?!"

It is Maya! For one second she thanked God it's Maya. Her fright is replaced with relief and immediately replaced again with annoyance. She lurches again and hits Maya with her palm, over and over.

"Aw aw aw, what did I do?"

"You made me watch those awful movies and went into a 24-hour shift. That's what you did" Hearing her wife's answer, Maya can't control her laugh.

Frustrated, Carina picks her umbrella and starts to walk back to her bedroom. "It's not funny Maya, I can't sleep"

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry"

Sometimes Maya is unbelievable. She's laughing because her wife is scared all night. Seriously? But then Carina remembers, Maya isn't supposed to be home tonight. Just before she enters the bedroom, she stops in her tracks and spins around, "Wait, what are you doing here? Aren't you still on shift?"

"Had a big fire, chief told us to rest. D shift is replacing us"

Squinting her eyes, her wife kinda looked tired. A little bit of soot under her chin, which maybe she missed cleaning at the station.

Then worry replaces her annoyance. "Are you okay?"

"I'm okay, just tired. Why are you bringing the umbrella?" looking incredulously towards Carina.

"For protection" She mumbles, but somehow Maya can hear it. And there again, that mocking laugh. "You're sleeping on the couch"

The laugh dies down, replaced by the most annoying smirk in the world. "So you want me to die first?"

"Arggghh" Yep, she really hates Maya now. And the most infuriating thing is Maya knows she can't sleep without the blonde now.

"Does this mean we're not watching horror movies again? Because there is this new one ..."

"NO!"

Yeah, in your dream Maya Bishop.
