Halloween With...out King Boo?

Summary:

You've been trying your hardest to persuade the King of all Boos to go trick-or-treating with you. Will you succeed, or spend another year by yourself on Halloween?

Work Text:

“C’mon, please?”

“For the last time, you insufferable human, I will NOT do this ‘trick-of-treating’ with you!”

You pouted at that, and crossed your arms over your costumed chest. Over the past few days you’ve been trying to persuade the King of all Boos to go trick-or-treating with you, but no matter how hard you tried, or how much you pleaded, King Boo would always say no. Now it was Halloween night, and this was your last chance to get him on board.

“But I thought Boos loved Halloween!” You huffed, and gave him a fake suspicious look.

“Well yes, we do love and cherish this delightful holiday, but I have my OWN agenda to attend to. I don’t even see the point of me coming with you— I can’t even eat candy! King Boo said with a grunt.

You groaned loudly. It seems like you’ll have to go to extreme measures to persuade him into coming with you. You didn’t want to have to do this, but it seems you were just about out of options. With that in mind, you gave him the cutest puppy eyes you could muster, and clasped your hands together while stepping closer to him. “B-But, you could scare people into giving me more candy! Pretty please?”

“No.”

You lowered your bottom lip. “But… I came all the way here to your mansion! It took me like, two hours to get here! Can’t you, y’know, throw me a bone and come trick-or-treating with me?”

King Boo lightly growled, and moved his round body closer to your face. “I’m not going to repeat myself, mortal— I am never, EVER going to do something as childish as that! And besides, like I said, I have other things I need to do that don’t involve pesky little humans such as yourself!”

As soon as he finished saying that, he floated through the floor boards, leaving you by yourself. The faint coldness in the room disappeared immediately after he left. “Fine!” You said grumpily to nobody, glaring at the spot where he went through, “I’ll just go by myself! I don’t need someone to come with me!” Even though you knew you could persuade a random Boo into coming with you— maybe someone like Fred, the Boolossus Boo that went against the typical Boo-ish namesake— you wanted King Boo to come with you… But, it seems like you failed in your endeavor, so you’ll be spending this Halloween alone... Again.

With that somber thought in mind, you stomped out of the mansion, starting the long two hour trek back to Toad Town…

—

“Trick-or-treat!” You exclaimed with a wide smile, holding out your plastic bucket in front of you.

“Oh, um, hello!” The blue capped Toad woman who just open the door gave you an awkward smile, looking up and down at the costume you were wearing... “Aren’t you a bit, erm… old, for trick-or-treating?”

The corner of your mouth twitched, but you managed to laugh it off despite the fact that was the tenth time you’ve been asked that tonight. “What, no way! There’s no such thing as being too old for trick-or-treating!”

The woman hummed, before plopping something into your plastic bucket. It was a packet of raisins. “I suppose not… um, have a good night!” She said, and didn’t give you a chance to respond, slamming the wooden door shut in your face.

Your smile immediately dropped into a scowl, and you shuffled down the steps of the house, feeling increasingly pissed off. What’s so wrong with trick-or-treating as an adult? You liked candy too, damn it! But now, you only had sixteen pieces of candy, and… a packet of raisins. If King Boo were here, you’d have quadruple that! But no, no… he had something else to do, apparently, and you were out here trick-or-treating by yourself!

“This sucks,” you grumbled under your breath, looking down at the soft ground as you walked. “This couldn’t possibly get any worse—“

“Hey!” Someone shouted from afar, and you perked up a little, glancing towards where you heard the voice… Only to realize that they weren’t calling out to you, and instead to one of their kid Toad friends. You grunted, and walked a bit faster, now embarrassed. Urgh, this really blows! Maybe King Boo was right about this— it was a bit childish to go trick-or-treating…

Despite that thought, you continued forwards and went up to the next house, knocking on the door. There seemed to be faint music coming from within the house, and you listened to it as you waited… A small chill went down your spine, and you shivered, lightly rubbing your arms. Why did it get so cold all of a sudden?

…You huffed impatiently when no one answered the door, and knocked again… only to get the same result. You grinded your teeth together, and was about to leave, but the door finally opened.

You plastered on a smile, and held out your bucket, ignoring the flashing lights coming from inside the house. “Trick-or-treat!”

The Koopa who answered the door grinned, and leaned against the door frame. He was wearing a shirt that had the logo of a local college printed on the front. “Hey-hey-hey, sweet stuff. What’s a pretty human like you doin’ out here?”

You continued to blankly smile at him, and repeated the phrase; “Trick-or-treat… ing.”

He chuckled, and leaned in close to you. His breath smelled oddly like nail polish remover. “Trick-or-treating? Ya seem a bit old for that… Why don’tchu come inside? It’s awfully cold out there, and we’ve got drinks.”

Pursing your lips, you… thought about that. This guy obviously seemed creepy, but… free drinks? That sounds nice. Maybe you’ll snag a few drinks and leave… Yeah, that sounded like a good idea. You’ll show King Boo that trick-or-treating can be fun, damn it! You smiled, and gave a nod. “Yeah… I’d love to come inside,” you said in a soft toned voice, and gently batted your eyelashes at him.

He grinned widely, stepping to the side to let you in. He almost seemed surprised that you accepted his offer so quickly, but he hid his surprise well. Strangely enough, the cold followed you inside, but you ignored it. After he shut the door, you had the odd feeling that he… was looking at your butt. Huffing, you walked a little quicker, trying to ignore him. Once you were in the living room, you began familiarizing yourself with your surroundings.

There were quite a few people— maybe twenty or so, shared between the kitchen and the living room. The Koopa that had opened the door grinned, and walked in front of you. “You like the place? I bought it myself.”

You nodded, and briefly wondered if he said that to see if you were impressed by his house. “Yeah, it looks… nice. The Halloween decorations look cute,” you commented, trying not to act awkward. You lightly fiddled with the handle of your bucket before saying— “Where’s the alcohol?”

He laughed, and put a hand on your back. “Oh, I knew I liked ya when I first laid my eyes on ya. The drinks are in the kitchen. Here, let me lead ya over there…”

You lightly cringed, but he didn’t seem to notice, thankfully. When King Boo would touch your back, it was… comforting, even if he rarely touched you at all. But this… this was a bit creepy… Okay, no, this was hella creepy. This guy was touching a little too low down your back for your liking. However, you didn’t want to start a confrontation— at least not until you’ve had a couple of drinks, so you kept quiet as he walked you to the kitchen.

The first thing you noticed in the kitchen was… the couple making out in the corner, and you momentarily forgot about the hand on your back, trying to stifle a snort. The next thing you noticed was the assortment of alcoholic beverages on the counter, which included white rum, beer, and other spirits… Haha, spirits…

“Help yourself to anything ya like,” the guy next to you grinned. He patted your back, before walking into the living room. “I’ll be with my friend if you need me, sweet cheeks! Come find me when you’ve got your drinks!” He called over the music.

You sighed in relief as soon as he was out of sight, before walking over to the counter. Good thing he left when he did— you didn’t want to tell him to go away when this probably was his party. Though, needless to say, you weren’t going to try and seek him out when you’re inebriated— you’ll leave before that point. Grabbing the most favorable alcohol in the selection on the counter, you opened it up, and got to work. You knew it was incredibly rude to come to a party like this and glug down some of their alcohol, but did you care? No, not at all. You were going to show King Boo that he was missing out!

When your throat started to burn, you pulled the little thingy of alcohol away from your face, gasping for air. Ohhhkay, that… burns. It’s been a while since you’ve had alcohol, but damn, what the hell were they putting in these drinks? Lighter fluid?

You put the drink off to the side, and wished you had some water or something to dull the taste and to make sure you don’t get sick, but… whatever. It’ll be fiiine…

—

Twenty minutes later, and it was not fine. The alcohol was kicking in hard, and you were swaying on your feet. Some people were giving you odd looks, and you lightly shivered when the cold feeling just wouldn’t go away. Okay, yeah, you’ve made some pretty poor life choices up to this point, and you regret every single last one of them. You felt like you were going to be sick soon, so you knew you should find a bathroom— and fast.

Stumbling into the living room, you looked around for the bathroom, squinting through the array of dizzying lights…

“Hey, hey, cutie,” the Koopa from earlier began, walking into your field of vison, “How’s it going?”

“Bathroom?”

He… paused for a moment, like he didn’t expect you to say that. “Uh… yeah, it’s over there,” he said, pointing over to the bathroom. It was near the corner of the living room.

You gave him a weak wave as a thanks, and rushed over to the bathroom, feeling your stomach churn. The crowd of people parted as you went by, and thankfully, there wasn’t a line, so you got into the bathroom fairly quickly. Throwing your bucket of candy onto the counter around the sink, you slammed the door closed, and stood there for a long moment, just… breathing. “Oh…” The faint thumping of the music was starting to give you a headache… At least there wasn’t any flashing lights in the bathroom…

Staring out the window in the bathroom, you thought about everything that lead up to this moment while rubbing your arms, trying to stave off the chill that seemed to follow you. Maaaybe you shouldn’t have went to this stupid party…

“You’re an idiot,” the King of all Boos said as he just suddenly appeared in fucking front of you, and you let out a short squeal.

“K-KB!” You squeaked, and blushed a little when you realized how close he was. This bathroom was terribly small, and he was awfully large… or maybe it was the alcohol that was making your face warm. You couldn’t tell, but you still felt your heart flutter in your chest. “H-How? Why?”

He scoffed, and folded his little nubs… or tried to, at least. “I had a feeling that you’d do something stupid, so I went to go and find you. Turns out, I was right— you were doing something stupid. Do you have any idea how worried I was about you?”

You looked off to the side while tapping your index fingers together, not noticing the screams coming from outside the bathroom. “Welllll… I just wanted to prove you wrong, and… Uh, wait, did you say that you were worried about me?” You asked, blinking a few times.

He grunted. “Yes. I, the terrible and horrifying King Boo… was worried about you.”

“Cute.”

“Shut up.”

You giggled stupidly, and ignored how warm your face felt. Without a second thought, you gave him a hug. The alcohol must be strong in your system. “Well… I’m glad you were thinking about me.”

He stiffened, before sighing deeply, and patting your back. Normally, he would’ve became intangible and not let you touch him, but… He’ll let it slide. “Yeah, yeah— whatever, you mushy little mortal. Let’s get out of here.”

You nodded, and… finally noticed the screams coming from the living room as you stopped hugging him… “Did you bring some of your Boos to scare those people?” You asked, and smiled when he flashed a devilish grin. “Good. That party sucked.”

“Agreed,” he said as he drifted towards the window. The purple gem on his crown shone, and the window slid open. His round ball-like body was a bit too… big, for the window, so he briefly turned his round body incorporeal and phased through the wall instead.

Slowly, you furrowed your brow, and looked out the window to squint at him. “Uh…” He turned his body to squint back at you, wondering why you weren’t coming out. “I… I thought we were just gonna go out the front door instead,” you explained with a sheepish smile.

King Boo huffed. “As much as I wish to see the chaos, I doubt you would want to see what my Boos are doing.” You paused, and nodded in agreement to that… He grunted when you still haven’t come through the window yet. “What’s wrong?”

“I, um… I don’t think I can go through without help,” you mumbled, a little embarrassed.

He groaned loudly. “You’re annoying, you know that? Fine, I’ll help you. Just step through the blasted window, and I’ll help you down.”

You gave him a thankful smile, and carefully sat on the window sill, swinging one leg outside, then the other… After a pause, you looked up from the ground to stare at him, not sure what to do next. Your legs were outside, but… you weren’t entirely sure how to jump down without hurting yourself— you were still pretty damn drunk…

He rolled his purple eyes, and floated a bit closer to you. “Jump down— I’ll catch you.”

…You puffed your cheeks out into a pout. “But… it’s scawy,” you said in a childish tone.

“I’ll show you scary, you big baby!” He hissed, and you lightly giggled.

“Okay, okay, I’m coming down…” Slowly, carefully, you slid down from the window, and you felt your heart skip a beat when you fell downwards.

King Boo, the lovely ghost he was, caught you to the best of his ability… Which meant that your chest was pressed against his face. He quickly put you down on the ground, and floated a little away from you. However, you hadn’t seem to notice what just happened, and was instead smiling brightly at him.

He quickly looked away from you so you wouldn’t see his face, and was oddly silent for a long moment.

You... were a little confused at his sudden change of attitude, but thought that he was just being his regular Boo-ish self. “So… what’s next? Can we go trick-or-treating now?” You said the last part in a cute voice.

That seemed to snap him out of his stupor, and he cleared his metaphorical throat as he slowly looked back over to you. “Ah, I… hadn’t planned on…” He sighed when he saw your puppy eyes, and felt his stubbornness waver. He may have held his ground over the past few days, but after that party, he was growing softer by the minute around you. “Don’t— Don’t give me that look…”

“What look?”

“Th-The look you’re giving me now!”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” you giggled.

STOP IT!”

You giggled a bit louder, and your little cheeks turned pink. “I-I’m innocent, ‘coppah! You’s ain’t takin’ me ta jail for a crime I didn’t commit!”

King Boo lightly growled, and floated towards the street behind the house. “I hate you sometimes.”

“Sometimes?” You repeated, and laughed when he glared at you. “I’m just playing with you, King Boo.”

King Boo merely huffed in response, and floated further away from you, heading down the street. You quickly followed after him, and opened your mouth to ask him if you both really were going to go trick-or-treating together, but…

You quickly realized that you had completely forgotten about your candy bucket.

“Hey, um, KB?” You called out to him. He slightly turned his body towards you to show that he was listening. “Um… can you do me a huuuge favor and… get my candy bucket? I think I left it back at that house we were at…”

King Boo groaned loudly. “Do I have to go get it?” He said, and huffed when you lowered your bottom lip. “You’re lucky I like you,” he grumbled. “I’ll go get it… Stay here.”

“Thaaank you, big helper,” you said with a drunken giggle. “I’ll be here if you need me.”

King Boo slightly glared at you, before rolling his purple eyes, and floating back towards the house you two were in. “Mortals,” he scoffed to himself, hoping that he’d find your bucket right away…

—

You were more annoying than most mortals, King Boo had come to find out. If he had to make a tier list, he would put you under second most annoying mortal. The only reason why you weren’t in first place was because Luigi took that spot by a looong shot. Mario came in the third place, and… this was exactly when King Boo realized that the most annoying people he knew were humans.

The King of all Boos exhaled a breath that he didn’t need, and continued to search around for your stupid bucket in the now mostly empty house. You didn’t say where you had left it, so it was up to him to find the blasted thing, if somebody hadn’t come by and snatched it up already. For the life of him— or the death of him, rather, he couldn’t remember where you had placed it. You probably didn’t remember either. A few Boos were helping him look, and by now, all the mortals were long gone…

Oh, you were so annoying! First, you make him feel guilty for not going trick-or-treating with you, then you act so stupidly, and head to a damn college party with that jackass of a Koopa, and now you lose your blasted candy bucket?!

Yeah, you were reeeal lucky that King Boo liked you…

You’re also lucky that he hadn’t put you in a damn painting yet!

“Sire?” A small Boo with a flower hat called out. They sounded feminine, and soft-spoken. “We, um… We weren’t able to find the candy bucket…”

The King of all Boos groaned, and rubbed at his forehead. “Seriously? None of you were able to find it?”

The little Boo gave a sheepish smile. “N-No sire… We weren’t able to find it… But, ah, um… I’m sure we can find another bucket som-somewhere else!”

King Boo lightly growled in frustration, and glared at the wall for a long moment. Where in the world did your stupid bucket go? It couldn’t have gone that far, surely. He had checked the bathroom, bedrooms, kitchen, and living room, so someone must have taken it after they both left the bathroom…

“Boolivia?”

“Y-Yes, sire?” The Boo with the flower hat said nervously, probably resisting the urge to hide behind her little nubs.

“Where did the mortals in this party go?”

…Boolivia paused, probably thinking where the mortals had run off to… After a minute or two, she shrugged sheepishly. “I-I’m not sure, sire. They all kinda ran out of the house, and I decided not to chase after them…”

King Boo groaned. “You’re useless, you know that?” He patted the back of her round body, lightly scowling now. “Go do something useful, and scare some people. I’ll… I'll go and tell the human about their loss,” he grumbled. He would try and sense out the mortals that were in the party, but… even then, he highly doubted that he’ll find your candy bucket. Besides, he didn’t like leaving you alone for so long.

Boolivia sighed sadly. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be of much service to you, my King, but I hope you enjoy the rest of the night with your human! I’ll scare as many mortals as I can!” She said, before floating off.

King Boo just… floated there for a while, taking a moment to comprehend what Boolivia just said. His human? You were seen as his human? Ohoho, that just stroked a part of himself that he didn’t even know that he had! You were his... All his…

He lightly cackled to himself, and the rest of the Boos in the living room gave him an odd look— but he didn’t care! You were his! Even though you were incredibly annoying, and he wanted to punch you in the throat sometimes, you were his, and that was all that mattered…

Was he looking a little too deep into what was probably a passive comment? Probably so, but again, he didn’t care.

He continued to cackle to himself like some little school girl who just kissed their crush, and drifted out of the house, going towards where you last were.

Once he saw you, he let out a sigh of relief… but quickly scowled when he saw that same damn Koopa from earlier with you. The Koopa seemed to be invading your personal space, but you were putting up a good fight, standing tall. He was too far away to tell what was being said, but it seemed like the Koopa was heavily flirting with you.

King Boo wondered if he should intervene or not, knowing that you were fully capable of handling yourself, but when he saw that the Koopa put his filthy little hands on you, he knew that it was game over for this sucker.

And what do you think you’re doing with MY human, you pathetic mortal?” King Boo snarled as he suddenly appeared in front of the Koopa, trying to put as much space as possible between you and this bumbling fool

The Koopa sputtered, trying to come up with some sort of defense for his actions while gaping like a fish out of water. “I, um, o-oh, I thought—”

You thought WHAT, exactly? That you were going to prey off of MY human? How foolish! An insufferable mortal such as yourself should KNOW to NEVER mess with a King’s HUMAN!”

The Koopa took several steps back while hastily shaking his head. He seemed to be trembling in fear. “No, no! N-Not at all man! I-I wasn’t gonna, um— I wasn’t gonna do nothin’ wit’ yo girl!” He laughed nervously and loudly, before sticking his thumb out towards the familiar candy bucket sitting off to the side. “I-I was just gonna hand ‘em their bucket back, I swear! I wuh-wasn’t gonna touch ‘em or—"

Get out of my sight, before you join my army of undead!” King Boo growled.

The Koopa yelped, and quickly scampered off like a kicked puppy, not wanting to be on King Boo’s warpath. King Boo made sure that the Koopa was out of sight before looking back over to you, lightly furrowing his brow in… concern, oddly enough. Since when has he been concerned in his lifetime? Or his deathtime, rather. He was about to say something, probably along the lines of what that Koopa said or did to you, but you spoke up first.

“Y’know, it's kinda hot when you use your scawy voice,” you said in a cute tone, giggling stupidly. “My white knight…”

King Boo squinted at you, appalled at the words that came out of your mouth. He… honestly had no clue how to respond with that, so he went for the next best option; empty threats. “If I knew that this was how my help was going to be appreciated, I wouldn’t have saved you.”

“I’m kidding, I’m kidding!” You quickly cried out, waving your hands back and forth like you were trying to wave away the abysmal words that you said previously. “I’m kidding, I promise,” you whined.

King Boo… had to cackle at you. You were just so, so… so cute! Adorable, even! You probably thought that he would be offended by calling him hot, or your knight! Once he was done laughing, he let out a short, happy sigh, and went over to pick up the candy bucket from the ground. “Let’s go trick-or-treating, you dork…”

…You stopped waving your hands back and forth, and… slowly looked at him like he had just told you the sun was a triangle. “What? But… But I thought… I thought you didn’t want to go trick-or-treating with me?”

“Well, I’ve changed my mind,” he said, and handed you your bucket. “And I’m not doing this just because of what happened, either.”

It seemed like you wanted to say more, to ask why he was doing this, or why he had a change of heart from earlier… But you huffed loudly when you glanced down at your candy bucket, glaring daggers into it. “Did that guy really take all my candy? He even took the packet of raisins! Fucker!”

“Do you want me to go after him?” King Boo said with a small snort of laughter. Though, if you said yes, then he certainly would go after that Koopa. “I’m sure I could sense out his presence.”

“No, no, it’s fine,” you grumbled dejectedly. “It’s not worth the trouble, since I had, like, only ten pieces of candy or whatever.”

King Boo patted your back as a comforting gesture, lightly cackling. “Well, we’ll go get more candy, then. It’s only, what— nine thirty? We’ve got plenty of time! Besides, I’m sure I could scare some people into giving us more candy.”

You mulled that over to a moment, before slowly nodding with a small smile. “Yeah… Yeah, you could scare some people into giving us more candy, since that’s like, your whole thing… But didn’t you say that you had your own agenda to attend to? What were you doing, anyways?”

King Boo waved a nub. “Ah, I’ve mostly finished up with that. I had brought most of my Boos to ol’ Peach’s castle— they were having a big party of sorts, and we scared nearly everyone inside!” He... then stared off into the distance for a moment, and his face slowly turned sour. “Too bad Luigi was inside as well, with that infernal Poltergust upon his back. Needless to say, I’m going to have to save Boolossus from the Professor’s base at some point.”

You lightly gasped at that. “They took Fred?! Nooo, he was my favorite one!” You cried out dramatically, putting the back of your hand to your forehead.

King Boo grunted, and floated down the street, heading towards a house that still had their lights on. You followed after him. “Don’t let anyone hear you say that, or else you might get in trouble,” he said somewhat jokingly, trying to take his mind off of the events that had transpired this night. “You’re the only other person I know that likes Fred.”

You pouted, and crossed your arms. “But he’s cute though!”

“And annoying.”

“Bah, that’s a part of his charm,” you waved a hand. “He kind of reminds me of myself sometimes.”

“Because you’re both annoying?”

You puffed your little cheeks out some more, squint at him. “Y’know, if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all!”

King Boo… stayed silent, but cackled when he saw the look you were giving him.

“You’re so mean,” you whined.

“I never said I was nice, did I?” King Boo said with another cackle.

“No, you didn’t,” you huffed, “but you are nice… when you want to be.”

King Boo was about to come up with a retort to that, but paused, and… nodded. “Yes, I suppose I can be nice when I want to be,” he said, and looked down at you with an adoring expression.

You… slowly smiled right back up at him, and felt your heart lightly flutter in your chest. You didn’t know how much the alcohol was affecting you, if at all, but this moment… felt real, at the very least. “Hey King Boo?” You began slowly.

“Yes, my little human?”

“Can I… hold your, uh… hand, flipper, nub thingy? Please?” You asked out of the blue.

King Boo didn’t say anything for a moment, seeming to contemplate your question.

When he didn’t answer, you repeated, “Please?”

…King Boo let out a short cackle. “Well, what do you think the answer is to that, human?”

  (BONUS)

You walked up to a well-lit house, holding a bucket filled with candy in one hand, and holding something… invisible, in the other hand. You went over to the door with a grin, and pressed the doorbell.

There were shuffling noises coming from inside, and you stared at your bucket as you waited, wondering what candy you should eat first when you get back home.

A few moments passed and the door opened, revealing a mustached Bob-omb in a sailor’s outfit. “Hey there, youngster. Nice costume,” he commented, before holding out a small bowl of candy. “Take two.”

You gave a smile at the compliment, and took two of your most favorite candies out of the bowl, dropping them into your bucket. The wrappers clinked together in a satisfying way. “Thanks. I’m surprised you didn’t say that I was too old for Halloween or something.”

The Bob-omb chuckled. “Well, I was thinkin’ it in my head, but I figured it would’ve been rude to ask.”

You… lightly laughed. “Well, I suppose I won’t feel bad for what happens next to you.”

He furrowed his brow in confusion, and was about to ask what you meant by that, but froze when the invisible thing in your hand turned visible, revealing the King of all Boos floating behind you.

Happy Halloween," he cackled lowly, “Now, give us all your candy, and we'll let you LIVE to see another Halloween!”

Not wanting to take any chances, the Bomb-omb quickly dumped the rest of the candy bowl into your bucket, not caring if some pieces fell onto the ground, and slammed the door shut. A moment passed, and the lights turned off in the house.

You turned to King Boo with a wide grin on your face, and picked up the pieces of candy that fell, shoving them into your bucket to the best of your ability. Somehow, you were able to cram all the pieces of candy into your very full bucket. “Look at all the candy I got, KB! I don’t think I'll be able to eat all of it!”

King Boo lightly laughed at your childish attitude. “Yes, and we only went to, what, seven houses? Maybe eight, and you have a full bucket? See, I told you I'd be able to scare people into giving you more candy.”

You snorted, knowing fully well that he was going off of what you had said to him back at the mansion a couple hours ago. “Uh-huh, whateeever you say, KB,” you said with the roll of your eyes, and began to walk back towards the street. You expected him to follow you, but... you turned around to only see him still floating at the house you two were just at, though, it seems like he was staring at something in the distance. Furrowing your brow, you looked to see what he was looking at, only to see... “Oh no,” you groaned, finally noticing the familiar looking green plumber. “What is he doing out here?”

“I could ask the same thing,” King Boo gritted out.

You frowned a little, and shuffled back towards KB. “What do you think we should do?” You whispered loudly. “Should we... pretend he’s not there, and continue forwards with our business? I mean, if you turn invisible, I don’t think he would... oh no, wait, I think he just noticed us. Shit. And what’s that metal thingy on his back?”

King Boo scowled. “Just stay here, human. I’ll handle this green menace.”

“King Boo, wait, no, come back!” You said with a grunt, and followed after him. You didn’t know Luigi very well, other than knowing that he was Mario’s younger brother, and that King Boo hated him, but the man seemed like an alright guy overall. That’s why you wanted to stop KB from tossing him in a painting, since that would probably make a lot of people very unhappy... Or would make his brother unhappy, at the very least. You figured that Luigi wasn’t a very popular person, but the only reason why you knew about him was because KB talks about him so much.

The green plumber down the road saw that King Boo as heading straight for him, and grimaced, before pulling out the nozzle of the Poltergust. “Now n-now, King Boo. We don’t have ta fight—”

How can you say that, when you’re brandishing a weapon that fights against ghosts?” King Boo growled, and floated closer to the plumber. “You’re basically CONTRADICTING yourself, Luigi boy!"

Luigi gulped, and his adam’s apple wavered in his throat. He was about to say something, but his gaze drifted off to the side, landing on... you.

Noticing that you had gained the attention of the plumber, you waved to him with a small smile, and— “Ow!” You winced when King Boo smacked you on the head.

“Don’t wave to him, you imbecile!” King Boo hissed.

You lowered your bottom lip, pouting. “Why can’t I wave to him? I was just being friendly, damn it! I’m gonna tell him that you’re abusing me.”

King Boo sputtered, before settling a small glare on you. “Abusing you? Really, I think you’ve been abusing me, since you’ve forced me to scare people into giving you more candy.”

“Forced you?” You gaped stupidly at him. “You’ve been scaring people on your free will, ya butt head! I never forced you to do anything!”

“Butt head?! Who’re you calling butt head, you little—”

Luigi cleared his throat awkwardly, and you both paused in your banter. “U-Um, I see that both of you... aren’t causing too much trouble, so, um... I’ll just... u-um... leave. I guess.”

King Boo grunted, and was going to say some mean words, but you spoke up first. “Sorry for troubling you, Luigi,” you said apologetically. “I’m sure KB was just having fun back at the castle, and I really wanted some candy... Though, could you ask the Professor to release the Boos that were captured? Please? At least let Fred go, if anything.”

Luigi... sighed deeply, and ignored King Boo’s glare to the best of his ability. “I’ll, um, go talk with him. I can’t promise anything, but, um... Yeah, I-I’ll talk with him,” he said, and put the nozzle of the Poltergust away.

You gave him a thankful smile. “Thank you so much. And again, sorry for troubling you!”

Luigi waved a hand as he turned around, trying to act nonchalant about the whole thing. However, you could see that he was still shaking. “It’s no problem,” he said, and hurriedly shuffled away, probably trying not to have a panic attack after the whole ordeal.

You watched him leave, before turning back to King Boo. “See? You don’t need to be mean to make people go away.”

King Boo scowled, but you could tell that he wasn’t mad at you. “Yeah, yeah, whatever. Let’s head back to your place, mortal.”

You smiled at him, and reached for his little hand flipper nub thingy. He let you hold his nub, and you both slowly walked down the street, hand in nub, under the array of stars shining in the clear sky. Most of the lights in the houses were off, and you both were surrounded by darkness since there wasn’t any street lights on this road— but you certainly weren’t scared. You knew King Boo would protect you from anything that may be lurking in the dark...

“Hey, King Boo?” You asked softly after a few minutes of walking.

“Yes, my human?”

You chewed your bottom lip, contemplating whether you should ask the question you were thinking about, since it might make or completely break your relationship with him...

King Boo sighed a breath that he didn’t need. “Just say it, human. Whatever it is, I won’t get upset.”

“Do you love me?” You blurted out.

…

…

…

“Yes.”
