Work Text:

He only had one goal in mind as he stealthily made through the enemy’s castle with a knife in hand. That goal was to assassinate the first born son of the king of this kingdom and he was not about to fail this mission.

This was a very delicate mission and absolutely nothing could go wrong otherwise he would not leave this castle with his head still intact. He didn’t intend to kill any other than his target, so the few guards that quickly proved to be a hindrance, he simply knocked out and hid from sight. This knife was only intended for the first born prince and no other blood should taint its blade than the blue of his.

There is a reason for all of this, and no ill intent came from him, he was just simply asked to do a job of fairness. You see, Junhui was born in the kingdom of Elinoar on the castle’s grounds. His family had throughout generations served and protected the royal family and it was only natural for Jun to follow his family’s footsteps.

Just beyond the border of Elinoar was the neighbouring kingdom Suarian and the two kingdoms had been at war for what seemed like eons. The first reason for war has long been forgotten by the citizens but the hatred towards each other has only grown immensely as the years go by.

This hatred only got worse when the Suarian king sent an assassin into the castle, snuck into the crown prince’s chamber and killed the young prince in his sleep. The assassin was long gone by the time the deed was done and the king and queen found their child dead in his bed with a single note signed S. It was clear who had done it but the family had to mourn the loss of their kid first. The whole kingdom had been in mourning for a month when the king in his sorrow wanted to seek revenge. He wanted the Suarian people and especially the king to feel the pain that they had just endured.

So the king sent his best marksman on the case to act as an assassin with the order to kill the crown prince of Suarian. Jun took the order with honour, knowing exactly how much this mattered for his king but it was easier said than done. They would likely be on higher alert concerning what they had just done and the fact that nothing had yet to happen but Jun had never backed down from a challenge and he was not about to start now.

So here he was, a twenty-five year old man stealthily making his way through the many halls of the castle in search of the crown prince’s chamber. He will be the one to end the sorrowness of his people, costing what it will.

As he slowly rounded the corner, he stopped in his tracks seeing two guards walking in the general direction he was in and he pushed himself up against the wall in an attempt to hide from them.

Shit....

With almost no time on hand, he started to look around trying to find his way out of this situation when noticed a huge tapestry hanging from one of the walls nearby. He could attempt to hide behind that and hoping the shadows in the hall plus the tapestry would be enough to make him not be seen.

He saw no other way, so he had to take the chance.

He quickly made his way there and pushed it to the side to find a small indent behind that was just big enough for him to squeeze behind and hopefully not take too much space that he would be seen by the movements.

His breath hitched as he listened to the metal clang of them walking by. He needed to be absolutely quiet for this to work.

The only sound he could hear beside the loud footsteps was the beating of his heart that seemed way too loud at the moment, surely they had heard it.

The footsteps stopped and seemed to get closer and everything was like a hyperfocus for Jun. This would surely not be how his life would end?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After what seemed like hours, the guards had finally rounded another corner and away from Jun’s hiding spot. Allowing himself to breathe normally once more he slowly and carefully took the first step out of his hiding spot. He placed himself by the corner he had tried to round just moments before, looking to see if he could see the crown prince chamber in sight.

He was in luck, it seemed he had found the place so once he got a clear visual, he stealthily sneaked closer to the door that he had identified as were his target would sleep and opened the door. He knew that it wouldn't be locked as it could hinder the guards ability to protect the prince in case of an emergency so that part was easy enough, now he just needed to make absolutely no sound.

Peaking into the room, he saw his target lie on the enormous bed like the privileged royal he was. He closed the door after him as he made his way towards the sleeping prince, not having the time or energy to fully process how beautiful the room had been designed. No, his eyes were only on the chest that was slowly falling and rising rhythmically just mere feets away. In no time he was right by the bed, the prince unbeknownst to the intruder that was in his room. This was almost too easy.

Jun crawled on top of him, being extra careful of his weight placement but this was the easiest way to make sure he hit correctly no matter how risky it may seem. As he finally got his first look at the prince, he couldn't help but admire his beauty. His jawline was sharp and striking which somehow contradicted the softness of his face. He had light curled hair that framed his face in what seemed to be just the right way. How could a person look so beautiful sleeping like this, too bad that he needed to die.

He took the knife out that he was instructed specifically to kill the prince with and grabbed it with both of his hands holding it over the prince’s heart. He was so close to making his country proud, so close to avenge the wrongful death of their own prince he just needed to stab downwards and finish this job. There was nothing more or nothing less to this situation so Jun took one last breath before mentally counting down for when he would do it.

Three...

Two...

One...

The knife finally struck down but it was stopped mid air by something that prevented it from striking further to finish the job. Looking a bit higher than the point his knife was, he was met by the most beautiful ebony eyes that looked back at him in a surprised manner.

"Oh shit" Jun tried to get his arms back and out of his grip before he was caught without the ability to escape. He needed to run now if he wanted to survive, it was absolutely necessary and he was not about to give up his life like this. But it was too late, the surprise quickly turned to anger and the grip on Jun’s arm only tightened before he was flipped so his back was against the bed now, completely at this prince’s mercy. While he was on top, he pried the knife out of Jun’s hand, putting him fully in control, Jun was certainly doomed if he did not think fast enough.

"Give me one good reason why I should not kill you?" The prince said in a whisper for only Jun to hear but even that simple whisper was enough to send shivers down his spine. Because above him looked a pair of royal but murderous eyes down at him, he would have taken the time to appreciate the sight if it weren’t for the fact that he was about to be murdered. But no matter what, Jun would not go down without a fight.

"Go to hell, you Suarian scum. You killed our prince!" Jun spat in his face with a wrath equal to the prince’s. He was locked with nowhere to go but he didn’t stop trying to get free from his grasp, maybe he could escape from the prince and then the guards and get back to his kingdom but the chances were slim.

"This is going to hurt,” The prince said with a venomous tone. Jun still tried to escape at the last second but he was captured with no way out and he had come here alone so no one would be looking for him or save him. He was royally fucked.

Closing his eyes, Jun started to accept his fate. He thought of his family at home one last time and the second family he had gotten from his king and how he had failed his only mission to get revenge for the poor child that was murdered by these people for the simple purpose of political play. It was in so many ways unjust and he wanted to make it right. An eye for an eye, a prince for a prince. Someone would probably take over his mission and he just hoped that his successor had more success than he had.

He felt the knife that he had carried rise above him, getting ready to strike before the sound of it going down rang through the air. These were his last moments.

Grimacing, trying to avoid the incoming doom of the knife going through him, Jun was surprised when the only thing he could feel was that of a feather tickling his neck.

What the hell?!

Jun slowly opened his eyes to see an equally confused prince staring down at him and the knife. That should have killed him off no questions asked, he went for the neck. Jun raised his one hand to his neck where he had felt the impact but was met with no blood, not even a single scratch. This should not have been possible, the only thing that can stop such attacks is if the person is your soulmate and he couldn’t possibly be his soulmate. But he didn’t die...

Holy shit, Jun’s one true pairing, his soulmate was the prince of the enemy kingdom!

The prince lowered Jun’s knife from his throat and dropped it on the bed beside them. His eyes never left Jun’s. Picking up the knife from beside him, he was just about to put it away when the door suddenly slammed open and a bunch of guards came running into the room, all of them with raised weapons pointing straight at the intruder Jun.

A single guard with a crossbow, pushed the trigger to let the arrow fly at Jun’s placement on the bed and the rest was just about to follow suit.

Jun, still being in shock over the newfound knowledge of him having a soulmate, couldn't react to the flying arrow that was headed straight towards his heart. Everything just seemed to slow down as the arrow neared closer and closer.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The prince however reacted by taking the tray that was near his bed up in front of Jun, letting the arrow hit that instead of him. There was a loud noise as it made impact with his skin and quickly, the prince pushed Jun down further onto the bed and covered him with his body so that he would be out of harm's way. Jun could feel his heart start to beat fast from the two almost death experiences and the fact that he could feel the prince’s body so close to his. He was so glad that the prince’s attention was on the guards and not on the ever glowing blush on his face.

"Stand down guards, if I see any of you hurt a single strand of hair from his head, I will personally see for your execution!” The prince's authority rang through the room making the guards start to lower their weapons but not fully yet.

"B.. b.. but he knocked down three guards on the way here, your royal highness," said one guard apprehensively. This made Jun cower down in the bed, wanting to be less visible as he was not sure how much power the prince had and if the king had sent an order of kill on sight to these guards. The prince noticed and only gave Jun's hand a squeeze of reassurance and a calm look before returning his attention towards the guards once more though the prince’s hand never left his.

"I don't care, go and take care of them, that's an order!" Every single guard obeyed the order and hurried out of the room, leaving behind the two on the bed. The prince finally lowered the tray that now had a very noticeable dent in it from where the arrow had hit and turned towards Jun who he was still straddling.

"So shall we forget the whole failed assassin attempt and start over?" The prince suggested. Jun could only nod his head in agreement as it would be quite impossible for him to carry out his mission now and he was not even sure if he wanted to do it anymore. There was some awkward silence between the two of them as they tried to figure out what to say next in this slightly awkward situation.

"So I’m the crown prince Joshua of the Suarian kingdom but you probably already knew that,” Joshua said with a playful smile. If Jun had to be honest with himself, he had not learned his name as that made his mission easier but he still nodded. “And what would your name be handsome?”

Starting to smile to himself over the already shameless flirting that Joshua had started, he couldn’t help but put everything else, including his king, in the back of his mind. This was far more important at the moment anyways.

“Junhui. I am Junhui, your highness.”
