“Hey Undine! Wake up!”
Undine opened her eyes, groaning, to find Kokoro, already transformed, standing over her. Shooting up, she stammered, “Oh, K-Kokoro!” She hoped she couldn’t see the red in her cheeks.
Kokoro let out a breath. “Thank the Founder. I was worried when you weren’t at club today, but I’m glad you’re okay.” She pointed over her shoulder with a thumb. “We should get going or we’ll be late.”
Nodding, Undine picked herself off of her bed, ignoring the embarrassment of Kokoro having to get her out of bed for the evening. Transforming as they walked down the hallway, Undine hurried after her girlfriend, who was already almost to the door. As she passed by the calendar on the wall, Undine stopped briefly to check what might have happened. Ah, that explained it, she always took a long nap on Sundays and must have overslept.
Wait.
“Hey, Kokoro?”
“Yeah?” She didn’t turn around.
“It’s Sunday.”
“Yeah, normally we run around the east side of town on Sunday, right?”
“No, I mean, it’s Sunday.”
“Something wrong?”
“We don’t have club on Sundays.”
Kokoro stopped in the hallway. “Oh?”
Undine stepped back. “And how did you get here?” She summoned a bubble of water. “You don’t know where I live.”
Kokoro turned to look at Undine. Then she laughed, a deep laugh that reverberated through the hallway, echoing off the walls, digging deep into Undine’s soul. She smiled wide, bright white teeth, and then wider, and wider, her mouth stretching as her face changing from its normal shade to a deep purple. Her costume slowly began to ooze a dark purple slime that dropped onto the ground.
“Well shit. I was hoping this would be soooo much easier. Guess we’ll have to do this the hard way.”
