Work Text:

The waterfall near Hogsmede was Sirius' favourite place in the world. Or at least it was at one point. Some of the most defining moments in his life had happened in front of the never-ending cascade of water. It was only fitting that it became his favourite place.

But even things we love can be grown too hated.

Now, as Sirius stood before the water like he did when he was young, he could feel nothing but pure hate for the water. The empty feeling beside him didn't help.

His wife, his love, his (Y/N) always loved the waterfall. She adored the wildlife surrounding it and the flowers that grew in the land surrounding the lake the water ran into. Sirius loved it because he always thought of her when he saw it.

On their first date, they had found the waterfall together as they walked through the woods for a place to place their picnic basket. Sirius wanted to find a place that was somewhat private for some fun but the beauty captivated him and for the first time, Sirius felt nervous.

They had danced the waltz here, slept under the stars here, did homework, skip classes and hide from the world here. It was their spot so it was only fitting that on their last day at Hogwarts that Sirius brought (Y/N) to the waterfall and got down on one knee.

The wedding had been small, with the war raging on, a large affair would have caused more trouble than its worth. But no matter how hard they tried, trouble seemed to follow them everywhere.

The Order of the Phoenix wasn't making any progress, and with the death of Marlene McKinnon, everyone was vastly aware of their own mortality. (Y/N) and Sirius found what solace they could in one another, but it was hard on them all.

The hardest day was when death-eaters ambushed the order. (Y/N) had apparated away; she couldn't fight any longer, it wasn't just her life in her hands anymore, it was her unborn child's life too.

But the death-eaters didn't care for her or her child. When (Y/N) felt a hand grab her mid-apperation, she knew that she wouldn't make it home so she went to the only place she truly loved: the waterfall.

(Y/N)'s death was quick. It was the only mercy of the killing curse: it was quick and painless.

Sirius could still see the spot she died in years later. When he escaped Azkaban and went to find Harry, he stopped at the waterfall but he didn't watch the water, instead, he looked at the patch of grass that never grew back right. He looked at the spot where he lost his family.
