I'm sorry this is so cheesy and fluffy and corny but I'm also not! I hope you enjoy!

Work Text:

It was finally October 31st, the day when everyone has the chance to be spooky no matter how old you are, the best day of the year. For Namjoon, the day to give out candy and rewatch The Nightmare Before Christmas under a cozy blanket. This year he was especially excited to give out candy. He’d bought purple lollipop skulls and was determined to compliment every single kid’s costume.

When the clock hit 4:30 pm he quickly changed into the skeleton onesie he’d bought for the specific purpose of giving out candy. He’d told his mom about it, and she’d insisted he sent a picture when he was ready. He couldn’t argue with her even though he knew she’d send it to all his aunts. Later he would find many text messages from his favorite aunt saying he looked absolutely adorable. His mom even told him she’d seen many babies with a similar onesie in the supermarket. Great.

Anyways, as soon as he was all buttoned up, he put on some black and white socks to finish off his look and grabbed a book to read while he waited for the kids. He’d gone so far as to commission his artistic next-door neighbors, Taehyung and Jimin, to draw a sign that read, “candy available for all trick or treaters”. He was all set.

He waited and waited and waited some more. At fist he thought maybe 5 pm was too early for the candy seekers, but when the clock struck 9 pm and natural light had long ago dwindled, it was time to face the music: nobody was coming to pick up some candy. He was about to call it a day and go to bed when the doorbell rang. He slowly got up from his seat and went to the door to find his best friend and roommate Yoongi at the door.

He was carrying a bag of groceries and was smiling up at him, his soft blond hair falling over his left eye. “Hi, sorry, I forgot my keys” Yoongi said. “Hi, come in” Namjoon answered laconically, as he moved to let Yoongi in. Yoongi’s initially bright smile fell, and he promptly walked in. “Hey, what’s wrong?" he asked. Namjoon pouted and scratched his head and said “uhm”. Yoongi could see tears gathering at the corner of his eyes, so he gave the big guy some time to collect himself. He noticed the untouched candy bowl placed on top of the table behind Namjoon and the big skeleton onesie he was wearing and pieced two and two together.

“Did nobody come for candy?”. At that Namjoon softly nodded while looking at the floor and a small tear escaped the corner of his eye. Yoongi quickly deposited his grocery bag on the nearest available surface (coincidentally right next to the candy bowl) and enveloped Namjoon in a hug he hadn’t asked for. It was a bit stiff at first, but Namjoon soon relaxed between his arms and started openly sniffling, bending down to place his head in the crook of Yoongi’s neck.

After a while the sniffling subsided and Namjoon turned his head a little while still resting on Yoongi’s shoulder. “I was really excited this year, but I guess most kids in the building must have gone to other places to trick or treat”. Yoongi softly caressed his back and murmured “I’m sorry, baby. I’m sure next year will be better”. To which Namjoon softly answered “I hope so”.

To Yoongi he still sounded like the living embodiment of the sad face emoji, so he said, “do you want to watch a movie?”. Namjoon nodded again without meeting his eyes and said, “Let me go wash my face and I’ll be right back”. While Namjoon went to the bathroom Yoongi went into the kitchen to put away the groceries he’d bought, among which was an almost completely melted tub of ice cream.

Once he was finished, he texted their downstairs neighbor Seokjin and asked if his kid hadn’t gone trick or treating. Seokjin promptly texted back that they’d decided against it because his kid was kind of shy and not excited at the prospect of knocking on strangers’ doors, even with the company of both his fathers. So Yoongi asked if he might want to come to his and Namjoon’s apartment just for a moment, just so he had the experience. After reflecting for a moment, he added, “Namjoon bought lots of candy and is really sad nobody came to trick or treat”. Seokjin promptly texted back “We’ll be right over”.

Yoongi put away his phone just as Namjoon was coming into the kitchen with a couple of DVDs between his hands saying, “Do you want to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas or are you more in the mood for Hocus Pocus? I know you don’t like scary movies, but I think these ones are just festively spooky”. Yoongi was fondly smiling at him while Namjoon kept mulling over the titles he was considering when the doorbell rang. Ding. Joon immediately stopped talking and looked towards the door with big hopeful eyes. “I’ll get it!!” he yelled while throwing the DVDs to the ground. Yoongi chuckled and bent down to retrieve the DVDs from the floor before following Namjoon to the door.

When he got there, he saw Seokjin holding a bright faced doe-eyed two-year-old wearing pajamas with little pumpkins all over, a bright red coat and the cutest pair of miniature black converse he’d ever seen. Next to Seokjin stood his husband Hoseok, Namjoon’s high school best friend, holding a little pumpkin shaped plastic bucket and hollering at the sight of Namjoon in a big black skeleton onesie.

Seokjin and Hoseok’s kid, Jungkook, was quietly thanking Namjoon for the lollipops without meeting his eyes, laughing and hiding in the crook of Seokjin’s neck. “Do you want to come in and watch a movie?”, Yoongi asked. Namjoon’s face lit up at that and he excitedly exclaimed “Yeah!! We can drink hot chocolate too!!”. Hoseok grabbed Jungkook’s little foot and asked, “Would you like to drink some hot chocolate with these fun uncles?” to which Jungkook immediately nodded.

Just as they were all about to go in, Taehyung and Jimin appeared on the landing, carrying shopping bags and talking excitedly between them, until they saw the scene in front of Yoongi and Namjoon’s apartment.  As soon as they saw Namjoon holding the candy bowl they shouted “Hey guys! Trick or treat!!” at the same time. Namjoon laughed and gave them lollipops and Yoongi invited them in too.

They all went inside and drank hot chocolate with lots of pan de muerto.

Notes:

This was totally not inspired by the fact that this happened to me this year hehe, not at all.
Happy día de muertos!
