“Audata of Aedes Elysiae. I live with my husband, Hieronymus, and my son, Phainon.”
Aedes Elysiae. Gorgo had never heard of such a place. It must have been beyond the bounds or ambitions of Kremnos.
She tried for a smile and playful bounce of the bundle in her arms. “I am known as Gorgo. This is my son, Mydeimos.”
She was no longer ‘of Castrum Kremnos’. Certainly not its queen nor an esteemed warrior and not even the lowest of trainees. She was of nowhere. Nothing but a wanderer in exile.
When Eurypon allows Gorgo to decide the means of her demise, she chooses to accompany her newborn son into the River of Souls.
Rather than a sea of flowers or eternal battlefield, they wash ashore in Aedes Elysiae.

“What’s going on here? New training exercises?” Phainon asked in half-jest as he surveyed the chariot race and spectators.
“Some friendly competitions in Strife’s honour. A Kremnos tradition.”
“Competitions? Yet you’re not participating?”
“The host is responsible for overseeing the games and allocating the prizes.”
“Well… what about me?”
“What about you?”
He smiled so earnestly Mydei was torn between averting his gaze or doing something unwise to wipe it from his mouth. “May I participate? It’s so lively here. The rousing cheers, the spark of competition—I’ve been reeled in.”
Slowly, Mydei blinked and tilted his head but Phainon’s bright visage was unchanged.
Upon the anniversary of Castrum Kremnos’ fall at his own spear, in the shadow of Okhema’s high walls, Mydei hosts the annual funeral games—a celebration of glory and mourning bound up in Strife. It’s an old tradition frowned upon by the city the Kremnoan legion has come to unwillingly inhabit. But a necessary one.
This year, for the very first time, Phainon wishes to participate.

Summary
“Just give me… some time and—and I can… change back. You don’t have to…”
Nothing more escaped him. Even that was too much for Phainon, lips pressed into a thin line mired with regret that he had spoken at all.
“I don’t have to what?”
Phainon didn’t answer.
“I don’t have to what, Phainon?” Mydei demanded, sharp and rough, but that was always when Phainon met him head on.
The truth spilled out in a cracked whisper. “Try and love me. When I—when I’m like this.”
Amphoreus’ first solar eclipse was meant to be a time for celebration. But the sight of daylight devoured by darkness dredges Phainon’s old memories and transformations with them in a frenzied haze.
Mydei proves to Phainon that his appearances, and the past entangled within them, has never mattered to him.

Summary
It’s a thing wearing Mydei’s skin. A mimic of the same numbers and electrical signals.
It thrashes like the real one. Bucks with strength but Phainon clenches his thighs on either side of its waist. Scrabbles at Phainon’s arm with bare hands and not gauntlets, but Phainon’s grip tightens around its throat for every long line spilling gold down his fingers and its face.
Glassy eyes. Black flickering red. The only thing they reflect is Phainon. Nothing else exists.
“Stop…” Lips shaped after Mydei’s move but the voice crackles and pops with static. “Resisting.”
A grin stretches his lips. He knows what he looks like. Wild, deranged, humanity burned away by millions of suns and the rest of his meagre existence halfway gone. Taken from him and assimilated into something trying to be greater than him.
“I could say the same to you.”
Irontomb’s attempts to assimilate Phainon continuously end in failure. Phainon’s hatred is simply too steadfast to break.
So Irontomb experiments with a new approach: to pacify Phainon’s hatred with happiness. No matter how many scenarios and iterations it takes.
As always with Phainon, it’s not that simple.

Summary
He believed Mydei to be a civilian. One unfortunate enough to appear at the wrong place at the wrong time and became entangled in Phainon’s skirmish with the Cleaners.
Mydeimos’ disguise was hardly one that stood up to scrutiny. Perhaps Okhema’s heir apparent was more foolish than Mydeimos anticipated.
As the Crown Prince of Kremnos, Mydeimos has two aims as he secrets through the streets of a city he doesn’t care to know the name of: gather information on the enemy Flame-Chase Army, and avoid the Cleaners coming to stain the earth with his golden blood.
It was pure chance to encounter Phainon: the heir apparent and current leader of Okhema’s army, and Mydeimos’ current foe in the Chrysos War. But Mydeimos would never waste such a convenient opportunity to fulfil both of those aims in one fell swoop.
