Summary
In the wild, camellia japonica, also called tsubaki, blooms between January and March. The buds, appearing alone or in pairs, flower along the branches of shrubs or low trees, particularly toward their ends. Among warriors and in the samurai tradition, red camellias commonly symbolized a noble death.
In modern interpretations of hanakotoba, however, a red camellia most often implies romantic love.
