‘‘I used to think Fullmetal was a crude nod at your prosthetics…’’
Roy Mustang’s words were laced with a thoughtful hum, and Edward tried not to feel hurt by the misassumption. Many heard his title and assumed it came down to his automail arm and leg. Ed had just hoped the Colonel – after everything – would’ve been different; that Mustang would’ve looked past Edward’s ill-fitting uniform and cripplingly-heavy automail and only see him as a person.
‘‘But,’’ Mustang continued, pensive, ‘‘I think they spelled your title wrong. You’re not Fullmetal, you should be Fullmettle. As in, you are full of mettle.’’
Edward blinked, utterly baffled.
‘‘Mettle, kid. M-E-T-T-L-E.’’
Mustang spelled it out for him. Literally. A genuine smile tugged at the Colonel’s lips as he rumbled out a fleeting chuckle, affectionately sweeping a hand over the top of Edward's golden crown. The boy's throat constricted as an annoying warm blur suddenly invaded his vision. He had experienced more kind words and actions under this man’s brief command than he had experienced in a long, long time.
It was just a shame that it was only a temporary arrangement.

If Ed was found immediately after trying to bring back his Mum by Archer and Kimblee, instead of later by Mustang and Hawkeye.
The team gather at central for a military gala to meet the Fullmetal Alchemist, 11, with shaved head and a scar on the right side of his jaw. Accompanied by Kimblee and insinuating Ed being the right height.
Ed had his jaw wired shut for 3 months. He speaks with a south east country accent, and has a limp due to his automail being rushed through.
Roy requests Ed be transferred to his command for the investigation of a serial killer, the Grey Man, who uses alchemy to make his female victims mimic animals. Likely Shou Tucker.
Ed arrived Friday, didn't have accommodation, so stayed up the whole weekend in the office going over the gruesome case files.
Ed's not sure what to make of the team, he struggles to read friendly people, much better at reading those with nefarious intentions.
Hawkeye takes Ed in and introduces him to Black Hayate. They bond immediately.
Ed has retrograde amnesia, he doesn't remember his brother or Risenbool, nor sir surname. He was heavily drugged after being found. Kimblee says they found him doing the taboo in an abandoned building, and threatened to marshall any accomplices should Ed misbehave, not that Ed remembers.
Ed's spent the last year at the border skirmishes: Aerugo south and Creta west. Kimblee expressly forbays Mustang give Ed a gun. Using alchemy Ed buried the enemy, over 400 died.
Ed usually isn't given a bed, just sleeps on the floor in the same room as Kimblee, no free time, barely time to eat, so eats Hardtack, no personal clothes, so Riza tricks him into going shopping. A girl gets lost and mistakes Ed for her brother, wholly uncomfortable, Ed takes her to Riza, and they reunited her with her parents. Hughes explains how the records in Eastern command help in this situation.
The Gray Man strikes over the weekend, a woman with light brown hair and blue eyes had her internal organs transmuted into wings. Fuery dry heaved as Ed explained Kimblee helped with his nausea by pushing him into a trench of rotting corpses.
Sunday morning the team gather at a cafe to tease Havoc who's on a date, Ed falling asleep between Roy and Riza, Maes taking a picture.
One of the murders is from a copy cat killer, the team find Barry the chopper, and capture him. Ed getting run over in the process, his automail leg having minor damage considering.
Ed looses it when staff try to give him pain relief. Roy muses over the Mad Dog of the West being petrified of hospitals, all realising it's due to previous malpractice.
Gilmore approaches Ed, fellow soldier from Westpoint and keeps him up to date on the team under Kimblee, Darius and Heinkel nicknamed Ed Buck. He gifts Ed a picture of their old team.
Gilly's friends slap Ed around, who retaliates when asked if he's Roy and Riza's child. He breaks their nose, fingers and they lose a tooth. Ed assumes he'll be flogged for his actions.
Roy keeps snacks in his greatcoat for Ed, much to his confusion.
Rebecca was sent out West to investigate the rumors.
Ed has started going through the archives, and has been approached by Shou Tucker, the head archivist for help.
Three days into being at West point, Ed received Field Punishment No.1, being tied to a gun wheel, for refusing to use alchemy to kill. After a month, a shell kills Heinkel and Darius and the lady. Ed looses it and flattens the terrain, using alchemy till unconscious. Seeing Kimblee's glee and moan, grabbing at Ed's chest. Ed tries to shoot himself. He regrets not shooting Kimblee instead.
Archer and Kimblee have temporarily assigned Ed elsewhere, Riza and Roy are tagging along. Ed got put in a stress position, palm to the face and dunked in the toilet, bleach in his eyes, for not telling Archer more about Roy's alchemy.
Kimblee has a scar on his wrist from Ed biting him during Broadgate, when he held Ed down for not correcting alchemy for him.
They arrived at Mountford to investigate suspected human transmutation. Mr and Mrs Cairncross tried to rebind their sons soul to his body, resulting in Mr Cairncross surviving with missing organs, they give chase, Kimblee throwing Ed in front of a train to not lose Cairncross, resulting in Roy beating Kimblee. They catch up to Ed and overheard them discuss Truth.
Archer had the choice of Al who's breathing was shallow or Ed who had missing limbs. Ed doesn't know.
Kimblee explodes Cairncross, Ed shoved Roy and Riza out of the way but got covered in the gore himself. Roy declared them done, Kimblee could have the report Ed painstakingly mended from the spilt wine.
Roy bought Ed a peacoat on the way to the train.
