Sakusa Kiyoomi is confident in his ability in three separate areas; volleyball, being a bit of an asshole and most important, loving Miya Atsumu.
When he was a child, he always assumed he'd be alone. He always had a support network around him within his cousin, aunt and teammates but he didn't imagine he'd have somebody that he can love at his side all of the time yet here he was, engaged to Miya Atsumu of all people. It had been almost a month since the Olympics, since he had proposed to Atsumu there and then on the court and for the last three weeks, Atsumu had been away.
Kiyoomi had always thought of himself as somebody who didn't need lots of people around him, sure he had people around him but he'd always been independent. It was how he had been raised by his cold hearted parents; the need to be independent so you didn't have to rely on anybody else around you, it was one of the most used catchphrases in his house even though his parents had never been there, it was something that had stuck with him the most.
And yet here he was. Miserable. Miserable because Miya Atsumu was across the country taking part in some kind of brand advertisement and he was stuck at home by himself.
Of course, he was never completely alone. When Atsumu wasn't around, he could always go and see some of his teammates but most of them were elsewhere visiting family during the off seasons however, Osamu and Rintarou were often still around. During the off season, Rin always basically came to live with Osamu for the entire time, they hated the fact they lived so far away from each other and Kiyoomi hated it too, they were two people Kiyoomi cared about a lot and hated seeing them so down about something he wished they could fix. Having said that, Kiyoomi knew Osamu and his plans, knew that he was planning to surprise Rin with the fact he was opening a shop over in his district; Kiyoomi couldn't wait for that. Plus, Osamu had said he would be close by still for half of the season because even though they fought constantly, Kiyoomi knew the twins secretly hated being away from each other for too long at a time.
But, for now, Osamu and Suna were living a couple blocks away in Osamu's apartment and Kiyoomi was on the way to see them.
He'd known 'the Miyas,' Suna of course was included, since high school. Atsumu had basically forced his hand into friendship after the two of them had been to the All Japan Training Camp and thought Kiyoomi always promised himself he wouldn't, he couldn't help but continue to follow the hurricane of Atsumu and that meant his twin brother too. And with Osamu, came Rin. And, even though Kiyoomi hardly admitted it, Suna was probably who he considered to be his best friend. The two of them seemed to understand each other in a way others didn't and he was glad for Suna being in his life.
When he had been dragged via Atsumu into Osamu and Suna's lives, he had been cautious. He'd gotten used to Atsumu and his habits, and although Atsumu had some bad habits he had never, not even once tried to push Kiyoomi's boundaries or treated him with anything less than respect and he knew Osamu and Suna would be the same but that didn't make him any less nervous when it came to meeting them but they'd gotten along straight away and Kiyoomi had found himself in both his second and third years excited for Nationals so he could see them.
And now, he didn't have to wait until Nationals to see his family, he saw Atsumu everyday - well apart from now when he was busy and he often saw Osamu at least three times a week. It was only Rin that he had the opportunity to miss and was thankful when their games or the off season came along. Kiyoomi never thought he'd find his own family but he had definitely found it in those three people.
"Kiyoomi, how many times do I have to tell ya, yer don't need to knock!" Osamu exclaimed as soon as he opened the door. "Ya even have ya own keys!"
"It's rude not to knock babe," Suna muttered, coming up to stand next to his boyfriend. "Just because you and Atsumu barge into any room you can."
"Rin!" Osamu complained, finally stepping aside to let Kiyoomi into the apartment.
"I'm just telling you the truth love," Suna sighed, squeezing Osamu's shoulder.
"Hmph," Osamu sighed, reaching for his phone. Kiyoomi watched him type a message for a few seconds before turning to Suna who was putting his jacket on. The three of them had decided that the best place for them all was to go out to eat, they were meeting Bokuto and Akaashi there too since they were still living in the region and Kiyoomi of course enjoyed Bokuto's company, though he would never admit it, and he enjoyed Akaashi's energy.
"Sooooo Omi-kun!" Bokuto shouted and Kiyoomi had to resist the urge to roll his eyes. Bokuto always felt the need to shout everything at full volume even when they were sat close together around a small table, it always managed to attract the attention of those around them which made Kiyoomi uncomfortable but he also knew it was just part of who Bokuto was - as for that nickname that had stuck - he hated it when it wasn't coming from his Atsumu. "When is 'Tsum 'Tsum coming back?"
"Not for another three weeks Bokuto," Kiyoomi mumbled, suddenly not feeling like he wanted to eat or be apart of the conversation anymore.
Three more weeks.
Three more weeks with Atsumu singing in the kitchen, without waking up next to his warmth, without showers together, without more runs and dinners. Three more weeks without his favourite person being by his side. Kiyoomi could feel the loneliness seeping into his bones, he knew he had people around him that would be more than happy to spend time with him but those people weren't Atsumu and that's the only person he wanted right now.
"Excuse me," Kiyoomi mumbled, pushing his chair away from the table.
He jumped slightly when he felt a comforting hand on his arm and looked down to see the concerned look on Suna's face. He flashed him what he hoped was his most reassuring smile before he headed outside, letting the cool air wash over him quickly.
He grabbed his phone from his pocket, going to the one number he knew would always answer him when he needed it the most.
"Omi Omi!" Atsumu answered the phone as enthusiastically as he always did and it made Kiyoomi smile under his mask.
God he missed this man.
"Atsu," he whispered, he could suddenly feel tears building at the back of his eyes and he tried desperately to blink them away so Atsumu wouldn't know he was upset.
"Omi? What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"I can tell ya lying." Atsumu sighed from the end of the phone and Kiyoomi felt his heart drop, now he was worried again. "Omi, what is it?"
"I just miss you okay?" Kiyoomi said, his tears falling softly down his cheeks. "I just miss you quite a lot okay?!" He shouted, quickly turning away when he saw someone staring at his sudden outburst.
"Omi, I miss ya too babe."
"Can't you come home any sooner?"
"I wish I could I really do."
"I know I'm sorry, that was selfish of me to ask."
"Omi Omi, it's not selfish. I miss ya so much okay? But it's only a couple more weeks, I promise." Kiyoomi could hear the sound of a door slamming in the background, a sign that Atsumu had gone somewhere else to get some privacy for the conversation, for a few seconds he let himself imagine it was the door of their flat before he snapped himself back to the reality that he was going to have to go another three weeks without Atsumu. "Osamu said ya been hangin' out with him and Sunarin a lot, I'm glad."
"Yeah, they're a good support network."
"Ya, of course! Ugh I hate this Omi but I gotta run I'll call yer later okay? I promise."
"Okay. I love you."
"I love ya too Omi Omi."
Hanging up the phone was one of the hardest things Kiyoomi had done in the last year. If he couldn't see Atsumu in person, he wished he could speak to him for hours on end but because of the reason they were split in the first place, Atsumu was of course quite busy with what he was doing so they only managed to snatch a couple of minutes here and there unless both of them found themselves unable to sleep, then they could talk for hours and hours sometimes and Kiyoomi didn't even care that it threw his sleep schedule off for a couple of days afterwards.
"Hey Kiyo, you wanna go home?" Rin asked as the four of them left the restaurant, obviously wanting to come and find him.
"Yeah. Sorry."
"It's okay Omi-kun!" Bokuto exclaimed, hanging off his boyfriend. "We'll see you next week!"
"Come on Kou," Akaashi said, waving at his friends before following his boyfriend down the street.
"Come on Kiyo, we'll take you home." Kiyoomi nodded, following behind Osamu and Rin as they chatted aimlessly on the walk. Another thing Kiyoomi liked about the two of them was that they always knew what he needed, in this case, he needed some quiet but he didn't want to be alone.
As soon as they got back to his apartment, Kiyoomi knew something was going on. Normally, Osamu would just let himself in happily but this time, he stood outside the door and waited for Kiyoomi to go in first. He knew that it wasn't because of what had been said earlier, Osamu would normally brush it off meaning something was going on and judging by the smirk both Osamu and Rin held, they were both in on the secret.
Cautiously, Kiyoomi opened the door, switching the light on as he went.
At first he didn't notice anything different and then almost jumped out of his skin when he saw a person shaped lump on his sofa.
And there was only one person it could be.
Kiyoomi almost dropped to the floor but kept himself up as he rushed towards where Atsumu was curled up, clutching his phone in his hand obviously falling asleep straight after they hung up.
Part of him didn't want to wake him up, part of him wanted to grab a blanket and cover him with it but he was also pretty sure he was going to physically pass out if he didn't wake him up at that moment so that eventually won in his mental battle.
"Atsu," he whispered, shaking the setter's shoulder gently. "Atsumu."
"Hmm," Atsumu groaned, his eyes opening slowly. "Hey Omi, surprise," he mumbled, voice still full of sleep.
"What are you doing here?"
"Hey Omi, don't cry," Atsumu whispered, reaching out to wipe away a tear that Kiyoomi hadn't even realised had fallen. "I'm surprising ya."
"I can see that," Kiyoomi laughed, reaching over to press a kiss against Atsumu's lips. "I missed you."
"I missed ya too!" Atsumu shouted, suddenly away from his sleeping state as he stood up, grabbing Kiyoomi's hand to help him up too. "Now hug me!"
Kiyoomi didn't waste anymore time in throwing his arms around Atsumu and pulling him as close as possible. He didn't care that Atsumu had obviously been on a train for the last couple of hours and hadn't showered yet. He didn't care that people were watching them, didn't care that he was coming across as a bit of a mess, Atsumu was back and Kiyoomi finally felt like he could breathe again for the first time since he went away.
"And order has been restored!" Osamu called from where him and Suna were stood in the kitchen watching the pair.
"The Miya Four once again, back together." Suna mumbled, dragging Osamu over to the pair.
"Well, we are family after all."
