Summary
Lieutenant Caleb Shepard and his platoon are sent to investigate a missing pioneer team on Akuze.
~~~Nothing in his memory – real or fictional – even comes close to identifying it. A giant worm-like thing - something only vaguely reminiscent of the creatures he used to pick up off the sidewalks on a rainy day in Shannon as a child, but thousands of times larger - rises half out of the ground and looms above. It’s screeching roar is loud enough to penetrate his armor, and Caleb slaps his hands over his helmet where his ears would be, cringing in pain as Toombs grunts behind him. Surreal streaks of bright, glowing blue mark its head and tongue, while two long, sharp, claw-like protuberances, one to either side of its head, act like arms. Its ‘skin’ looks to be some sort of segmented plating, though the darkness makes it impossible to be sure. Whatever this thing is, it turns and ejects a wide spray of acid aimed at the rest of his unit taking up battle positions below.
It takes another second or two for the scene before him to fully register; the beast is moving toward them.
