Summary: It’s Aizawa’s birthday and of course Trickster gives Aizawa his present, but before Aizawa can enjoy it Nedzu calls Aizawa into his office to discuss an event that happened the night before. Hitoshi has gotten jealous of Midoriya finally trusting one of his teachers and confronts him about it, which Aizawa is not happy about.
Disclaimer: I do not owe any rights to the My Hero Academia franchise.
Author’s Note: There will be one more story where Shinsou meets Midoriya as Trickster but this is the third story that follows July 1st Hitoshi’s Birthday and July 7th’s Yamada’s Birthday, but it can be read alone.
~~Story Begins~~
“Midoriya,” Shinsou said one night when both boys were dealing with a night of getting no sleep. “I know what you’re doing.”
Midoriya blinked at his fellow peer, his warm mug of hot chocolate held against his lips as he looked at him with confusion. “I’m trying to be your friend?” Midoriya said, posing it as a question.
Midoriya was actually enjoying the silence that they were having for a while, it felt natural and it gave him time to process the case that Aizawa had given him to work on because the police and Aizawa were both stumped on the case. Something just didn’t set right with Midoriya and he was trying to figure it out.
“Give that up because I will NEVER be friends with a golden child like you,” Shinsou said.
“Golden child?” Midoriya said in a whisper with an owlish blink.
“No, I’m referring about you trying to take Aizawa-sensei away from me. He chose me to be his mentee which means that I am HIS personal student, not you. I am his son and you cannot take my father away,” Shinsou said. He got in front of Midoriya’s face and poked him hard in the chest. “So quit spending so much time with him and go speak to your own father!”
“Shinsou, what are you talking about?” Midoriya said as he flinched away from Shinsou’s touch, “I’m not trying to take anyone away from you, especially not Aizawa-sensei. I-”
“Then quit hanging around him so much after classes. Quit showing him those creepy notebooks of yours. It’s cutting into my one-on-one training with him,” Shinsou said before going to his room, leaving Midoriya alone.
Midoriya sat his mug down on the coffee table and pulled his knees up to chest, resting his forehead on them as he tried to calm his breathing and trying not to cry.
How was he supposed to tell Shinsou that he stays after class to ask Aizawa questions about all of his classes, but especially the loopholes in Heroic Laws, or that Aizawa asks on updates over Shigaraki or gets his opinions on some cases that they have him working on, or that since Aizawa finally knows the truth about One for All that he’s taken up the job of being his quirk counselor and helping him master his quirk.
Midoriya, even though he wanted to be Shinsou’s friend and kept trying to reach out to the boy, he did not trust Shinsou to know about his past or the secret behind his quirk, or his family’s secrets. It is actually thanks to Shigaraki and Dabi that he understands now he doesn’t owe anyone anything to be his friend. So, Shinsou would not be learning about his past, but right now all Midoriya wanted to do was cry in his older brother’s arms.
~~
Principal Nedzu had waited patiently for his old personal student to arrive. He didn’t want to do this today because it was a special day, but the issues needed to be addressed today. Nedzu had his eye on making Midoriya his new personal student since the first time he met Midoriya at the Entrance Exam.
It was such a delight to listen to Midoriya do an analysis of High Specs in the hallway while he was in the vents listening to the one person who had signed up for analysis support classes in years. It was refreshing listening to someone talk about him like he was an actual human instead of an animal. The best part, however, was when Midoriya had made eye contact with Nedzu in the vents just shortly before Midoriya had to go to the battle grounds for the physical heroic exam, and bowed.
“Thank you for listening to my analysis, Principal Nedzu. If I don’t do well in the Hero Course Entrance Exam, I hope that I passed the exam for your analysis classes,” Midoriya said before standing up straight. His green eyes had then looked away and he pushed his two index fingers together in a nervous manner. “Also, I hope it won’t be too much to ask, but I would love to get your autograph at some point that doesn’t deal with you being the Principal of U.A., but as a hero.”
Nedzu pressed the button on his desk that opened the door to his office before Aizawa could even knock. He mentally chuckled at the tired expression of the Class 1-A teacher, even as he heard the man grumble “one of these days I will knock on your damn door, you damn rat.”
“Please, do come in, Aizawa. There are some things we need to discuss and it would only be logical for us to discuss them now before they get any bigger,” Nedzu said. “Hopefully, you’ll be able to enjoy your Trickster book today.” He moved one of his paws to motion over to a coffee mug. “I have already poured you some fresh coffee.”
Aizawa walked into the office and Nedzu pressed the button again to close the door. Aizawa sat down in the chair across from Nedzu’s desk and grabbed the mug.
“What exactly do you want to talk to me about?” Aizawa said, taking a sip.
“There are two issues that we need to address and they both concern Izuku Midoriya,” Nedzu said.
“Of course, my Problem Child would be involved,” Aizawa said with a sigh that held more affection than what he usually shows.
“I would like for him to be my personal student, just like how you were,” Nedzu said. His paw went up in the air to stop Aizawa from speaking up. “He had signed up for my analysis classes as well as the Heroic classes and I’m sure by now you know how excellent his analysis is. You and All Might can share him on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for his quirk counseling, training, and potential theories on what other quirks he could possibly inherit. I will get to have him Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.”
Aizawa rolled his eyes before taking a long drink of coffee. “Yes, because clenching your butt and yell smash is appropriate advice,” Aizawa said. He placed the empty mug down and sighed. “I believe Midoriya would actually welcome the added bonus of your hell classes and keep up with everything. He’s a smart kid, almost on your level of genius, but his elementary and middle school teachers did nothing to help with his self-confidence. However, what about his friends and family?”
“The principal of Ketsubtsu is already planning on taking Shigaraki in as her own personal student which will give them something to bond over. I will also give him plenty of time to hang out with his friends as I know that with you humans, social interaction is important.”
“Good. Make sure that it is clear to Problem Child that if he needs a break to let you know and he won’t be punished for it. He has a clear problem with pushing himself even beyond Plus Ultra,” Aizawa said.
“Of course,” Nedzu said before his smile turned into a frown. “Now, I’m afraid the other issue of Midoriya is not as great and I’m disappointed in him that he didn’t talk to you about it. However, it might have something to do with human emotions and really, I was hoping I didn’t have to show this to you on your birthday. However, it would be better for the issue to get addressed now instead of later when it gets bigger and causes Midoriya to fall back onto his old habits.”
Aizawa raised an eyebrow at that comment but turned his focus to the computer screen that Nedzu had turned to face him. He watched the confrontation happen between his son who was the newest member of his homeroom class against Midoriya, the Problem Child of Class 1-A and knew deep down that Shinsou was going to face a hard sparring tomorrow during class. Hitoshi will possibly have a hard time with the class sparring sessions for a while considering its Midoriya. Midoriya would also possibly cry once he realizes just how much his class will stand beside him, even if they don’t know about his past.
This is Class 1-A and Shinsou was going to face the wrath of Bakugou, Todoroki, Ilda, Urakara, and Aoyama for sure. Aizawa also knew that Shinsou had a crush on Kaminari, but Kaminari might give him the cold shoulder because Midoriya has helped Kaminari out on so many things. This was also a school issue so not only will Aizawa and his husband have to give Shinsou another talk about his behavior towards Midoriya, but the more important issue will be discussing with Shinsou has a teacher over his first offense of quirk discrimination and the actions that will follow.
“I will talk to Hitoshi as a parent again with Hizashi,” Aizawa said. “I will also talk to him as teacher and student and let him know that this behavior is completely unacceptable. I will give him the warning, let the class know that he had discriminated against Midoriya and see who wants to go extra hard on Shinsou during the next sparring session. I will also explain the next two strikes to him as well.”
Nedzu waited as he knew Aizawa had more to say over the subject.
“That explains why Midoriya didn’t stay behind to discuss Float with me after school like we had planned today and why he seemed so nervous again in my class,” Aizawa said.
“Of course,” Nedzu said. “I am really sorry to have to put you in this spot, but there is one more thing.” Nedzu placed a black wrapped box with a white ribbon on the desk and pushed it towards Aizawa. “I may still be learning about human traditions and customs, but even I know how much birthdays matter to humans.”
Aizawa, already knowing that Nedzu finds wrapping things up to be illogical, lifted the lid of the box up and peered inside. There was a pure sleek black capture scarf inside the box and Aizawa lifted it up with a smirk.
“Thank you, Nedzu,” Aizawa said.
“You’re welcome, Shouta,” Nedzu said. “I have a feeling that you will be needing it when we invade the illegal drug ring known as the Aldera school district.”
~~
“Shinsou,” Aizawa said. “Stay after class today, we need to talk. Midoriya, you aren’t in any trouble, but Principal Nedzu would like to see you in his office today after class. As for everyone else, I shouldn’t have to remind you that you have essays due tomorrow for Pre-Quirk Art History and Heroic Law and Ethics.”
The bell rang signalling that another peaceful day at school has ended.
“Class is dismissed,” Aizawa said.
“Midoriya, why would Principal Nedzu request to see you? Did you break another bone and not tell us?” Kaminari said.
Aizawa watched as the electric quirk user walked by Shinsou without giving a second glance or a wave. Shinsou looked a little lost at that, but shook his head as he packed up his bag.
“Or did you do something illegal again?” Todoroki said.
Midoriya laughed. “No, I don’t think so. I haven’t really left the dorms this week. Also, I don’t know why Principal Nedzu would want to see me, but I heard he’s really good at chess. I wouldn’t mind playing a game against him and maybe he can teach me something about chess,” Midoriya said. “Kaminari, did you want me to come find you when I get back to dorms so I can help you with the essays and review them?”
Kaminari clapped his hands together and bowed to Midoriya. “Please, please can you do that for me?”
“Of course, it’s no problem,” Midoriya said. “Anyway, I’ll see you guys later.”
Shinsou stood up and slung his back over his shoulder as the last of the students left the classroom. He walked up to the front of the classroom and stood in front of Aizawa who had just finished wiping the board. Aizawa didn’t say anything as he walked over to the desk and grabbed his own Trickster analysis book.
The black and white leather book had the word ‘Eraser Head’ in a dark yellow color with the familiar signature of the Trickster - an eye peeking out from the corner of a comedy mask which had an aura of mischief surrounding it.
“Congratulations,” Aizawa said, causing Shinsou to stop thinking over his own analysis book from the Trickster. “You haven’t even been in Class 1-A for a quarter, but you are the third.”
Shinsou felt his chest swell with pride over that statement. All of his hard work was paying off, that he had made it into the Top Three in such a short amount of time, even as he transferred into the Heroic Class. He wonders who he pushed out of the Top Three, he hopes it was either Midoriya or Bakugou. He really didn’t want to deal with Endeavour's son or Endeavor coming after him.
“I hope you enjoy pain, because you are the third student who I have to give a warning to about quirk discrimination,” Aizawa said.
Shinsou looked startled at that but Aizawa kept on going.
“The first student was who you had replaced, Mineta. His first offense was the comments over Hakagure’s quirk being perfect for strippers and other red light district jobs as her quirk allows anyone to imagine whatever they want her to look like. I allowed Oujiro, Bakugou, Midoriya, and Shouji to hit him a little harder and most definitely kept All Might from stopping the match between Jiro and Mineta until she had made his ears bleed.”
“Aizawa-sensei, what -”
Aizawa took a step forward towards Shinsou as he activated his quirk. “The second student that I had to give a quirk discrimination warning too was Ojiro who had personal problems about your own quirk due to his past and pride. The first person that came to your defense was Midoriya and Ojiro had to defend himself against Midoriya, Bakugou, Kaminari, and Ashido.”
Aizawa deactivated his quirk and stared down Shinsou with a glare.
“I had expected more from you Shinsou, but you are the third student I’ve had to give a warning about and I’m almost positive that everyone would want to go extra hard on you during training tomorrow and guess what, I will let them,” Aizawa said.
“Sensei, I haven’t done anything that warrants a warning,” Shinsou said.
“Really? You want to lie to me about this Shinsou?” Aizawa said. “I saw the footage from the common room and I heard the discussion you had with Midoriya in the early morning when both of you should have been asleep. I understand your insomnia, but Midoriya also has nightmares and chronic pain to where he cannot sleep. I’m disappointed as a teacher, mentor, and a parent.”
Aizawa pinched the bridge of his nose and then let out a sigh.
“Midoriya has finally opened up to me and asks me questions to get help and to better understand all the material because I have gained his trust, his complete trust, something that not even All Might has. However, Shinsou, that shouldn’t matter to you because as a teacher, it is my job to help my students succeed first and foremost. You don’t get to decide on how I spend my time when I’m teaching nor do you decide on when we have training lessons,” Aizawa said.
“As a father, Shinsou, I’m warning you that you are coming to the teacher dorms tonight and we will be having a serious discussion over this with Hizashi. I’m expecting you to tell him exactly what happened because if you don’t, then I will,” Aizawa said. “The next time you make a quirkest comment when it's not appropriate or take it too far, your punishment will be a week’s worth of detention with either me or Nedzu and a 50,000 word essay of the victim’s choosing that will also require at least five credible sources. The third time will be the final time and you’ll be sent back to Gen Ed with no chances of getting back in the Hero Class. Are we clear?”
“Why do you care? Why should it matter anyway? It’s Midoriya who has the perfect quirk and everyone loves him, and -”
Aizawa had activated his quirk and stared down Shinsou.
“And you know nothing of his past. You know nothing about him and what he’s gone through. He doesn’t owe you an explanation, just like you don’t owe him anything, but I will tell you this. Midoriya is someone who you will need to learn to tolerate and pray to whatever deity is out there that his forgiving nature will still forgive you because he will either make or break you in the Pro Hero field. Just because he has the strength of All Might does not mean he doesn’t have the brains of Nedzu to back him up,” Aizawa said.
“That isn’t fair! I worked hard to-”
“So hasn’t Midoriya, so hasn’t Bakugou, Ojirio, Hakagure, Urakara, Ilda, every heroic student has worked hard to get where they are at. Life isn’t fair, Shinsou, but if anyone knows this life lesson more than you, it’s Midoriya. We will continue this discussion when we are home and Eri is put in bed because she doesn’t need to hear about how you talk badly to and or about her hero,” Aizawa said. “You’re dismissed.”
“Fine, whatever,” Shinsou said.
“Oh, and Hitoshi,” Aizawa said before Shinsou could leave the room, “those ‘creepy notebooks’ of his is one of the main reasons why Nedzu is taking him on as a personal student and here’s a lesson that no one else really knows yet in class. Never make an enemy out of someone who does analysis over quirks, they will either be your best friend or worst enemy, the fate behind the life of a hero or the death of a hero.”
~~
“Aww! Shou! Where did you find your Trickster book?” Yamada said as soon as Aizawa walked into the teacher’s lounge. He collapsed onto the couch before face planting into his husband’s shoulder which caused the voice hero to be concerned.
“In my sleeping bag,” Aizawa said. “Trickster is a problem child. The money that I gave him to help pay for Hitoshi’s book and yours was inside of mine. He also used anything coffee related ranging from blends to techniques to roasting styles.”
Aizawa lifted his head up and looked at his husband.
“Midoriya is going to become Nedzu’s personal student while still keeping up with everything and speaking of my personal Problem Child, we need to have a serious discussion with Hitoshi tonight.”
“Why? What happened? How serious?” Yamada said.
“I’m hoping Hitoshi will tell you on his own, but if not, then I’m going to be the bad parent who has to go back into teacher mode because Principal Nedzu called me into his office to discuss his behavior towards Midoriya. It wasn’t good because I’ve had to give him a quirk discrimination warning and a harsh scolding over what I do as a teacher has nothing to do with him. I can promise you that he will be hurting tomorrow after heroic class because Bakugou and Todoroki will jump at the chance to hit him extra hard tomorrow for the stunt he pulled this morning.”
“Ouch, that sounds tough, but usually you only have to give them the first warning and face the wrath of their fellow peers before it puts a stop to the behavior,” Yamada said.
“This was not how I wanted to spend my birthday,” Aizawa said with a groan.
“We could always celebrate Sunday when we don’t have to worry about patrols or any school,” Yamada said. “I could always do my radio work in the morning while I fix breakfast.”
“I like that plan. You’re the best.”
“I believe that was in my wedding vows. To be the best husband I could be to you,” Hizashi said as he twirled a lock of black hair around his fingers.
“Really? I remember it more on the lines of it being something about being the best annoyance of my life,” Aizawa said, chuckling as his husband overacted at being heartbroken.
