He groaned to himself. He spaced out amidst the crowd’s noise and clattering glass. And, of course, the smell of alcohol lingers around where he's sitting. He sighs, dreaming of something in his dreams he wants to achieve. To follow his goal to be a famous rockstar. But he hasn’t got the skill, nor the talent to be one, let alone someone to teach him. He felt tired until he heard a voice.
“Got space for another demon like me?” a feminine voice came through his ears.
Daddy Dearest looked to the source of the voice. A Female Demon towering above beside him. She wore a red dress, her lips covered with red lipstick and a glass of sparkling liquid in her hand.
“Huh?” Is the only thing he can mutter.
He was confused. Why is this woman here? He thought. There were a lot of empty tables, but why him? Those were the thoughts that surround him in his mind.
“Hah, I’m sorry, let me try this again.” The lady broke the awkward silence. The demoness cleared her throat “Can I sit with you?” The demoness said in an insistent tone.
Dearest sat silently unsure of what to answer.
The demoness sighed. “It doesn’t have to be hard. It’s either a yes or...”
“Fine, you can sit with me.” Dearest complied with the request.
The woman sat down on the opposite chair on the table. Eyeing Daddy Dearest.
“It gets boring when you have to sit alone, y’know. I thought having a lil’ company would make it more fun!”
“Hm, the same here.” Dearest replied with a slightly higher tone.
“Let’s start talkin’, who is this handsome demon that I’m looking at?” Questioned the demoness.
“That’s Daddy Dearest to you, and what’s yours?”
The demoness chuckled, covering her mouth with one hand. Dearest thought he’d get bullied for his name by her.
“Ha ha! Oh, my name is also silly! Mearest, Mommy Mearest.”
Dearest shouted laughter, louder than Mommy Mearest’s.
“Your laugh reminds me of my dad’s.” Mearest sipped her sparkling drink.
Dearest looked at the sparkling liquor in curiosity, lifting an eyebrow.
Mearest caught Dearest’s curious eyebrow.
“Oh, this? Wanna taste this?” Mearest slid the sparkling liquor to Dearest.
“Perhaps? What is this stuff?” Dearest said in curiosity.
“C’mon, it’s just a sip. Nothing world ending is gonna do to all of us.”
He may be old enough to go to nightclubs, but he never tried anything alcoholic. Dearest decided to take the leap and try it anyway. He gulped half of the glass.
Dearest tasted the liquid. The bubbly feel was nice, but the taste was horrendous to him. And oh dear lord he can’t take the taste. He instinctively spat the drink.
Dearest coughed and spat out the drink. No wonder he didn’t try alcoholic drinks. They’re god awful for his taste.
“Oh dear me! I thought- you uh-” She was puzzled about what to do, she didn’t expect this reaction from him. “Are you okay?” Mearest asked.
“What is this stuff? Is this sewer water or expired soda?” Dearest was confused about what he had just drunk.
“It’s hard seltzer, very new too” Mearest answered.
“Sorry for the mess, I could have just taken a teeny sip. I should pay you!” Dearest apologized to her.
Mearest grinned at Dearest.
“You don’t need it, deary, I can pay for ‘em.” Mearest looked for a waiter and yelled “Waiter!” waving a waiter to their table.
A waitress arrived instead and asked Mearest for her order. She asked for 2 drinks but Dearest had to refuse another drink.
“Are you sure? I can order another one.” asked Mearest
“Nah, It’s all right, Miss Mearest.”
“Please, you can remove ‘Miss’ and call me Mearest, you gentleman.”
Minutes passed by, both of them remained silent, unsure what to say or do. Looking around the bar, his head looked to a stage. No one occupied it, but a sole microphone and some boomboxes on the side of the stage. He looked back to Mearest, who was eyeing the stage too.
Mearest still looking at the stage said “I dream to be a pop star. I have almost everything ready for my career. But I couldn’t get it out if you know what I mean. ”
“Woah, you’re pretty enthusiastic, but I too have a similar dream in mind.”
Mearest looked back to Dearest
“What’s that?” asked Mearest
“I wanna be a rockstar!” Said Dearest in enthusiasm “But...”
Dearest was reluctant to fill in what he wants to say.
“But what?” Mearest questioned, forcing Dearest to utter his thoughts.
“Bu- uh, I barely know how to even sing. I don’t know, maybe it can stay a dream.”
“Deary me, with that attitude it’ll be a dream.” spoke Mearest. Mearest grabbed his hand, dragging him to the stage. Dearest, unclear where he is being dragged. When he noticed they were heading to the empty stage, his mind clicked what they are going to do. Both of them stepped on the stage.
Mearest took a microphone from the stand and handed it over to Dearest
“Just sing. I wanna hear it from ya.”
Dearest grabbed the mic from her hand. He looked at the mic, thinking what would he sing, he can’t sing one of his favorites without embarrassing himself.
“What’s the matter”
“I don’t know how” Dearest replied nervously.
“Don’t worry about it, my dad would teach me this when I was like your level.”
Mearest walked up to the boombox, her hand going for her front jacket’s pocket. She pulled out a yellow cassette tape.
“Just- follow what I’m doing.”
As Mearest pressed play on the boombox, the music began to play.
“Bo-pee-bo”
Mearest pointed her left arm to Dearest, signaling him his turn.
“Bo-pee-bo”
“That’s how you do it!” Mearset squealed in cheer.
They sang, exchanging random words in varying tones and harmonizing each other. Both Mearest and Dearest were filled with glee and symphony in their duet, that a crowd slowly formed around the stage. Chanting with ‘Heys’ between their duet. Dearest hearing the crowd cheer on, made him feel more confident in his singing. He and began improvising on his side.
After the music came to an end, the crowd cheered and clapped at their performance.
Dearest looked around the cheering crowd. Dearest’s hand felt warm. As he looked to his left hand, he saw Mearest’s hand held his and waved at the crowd. The look of the crowd cheery state made him feel accomplished.
As he waved the crowd, he saw something that really stood out. Within the crowd, a man in a white suit stood there, with his eyes glowing red. He wasn’t cheering or clapping. He can feel his growing temper in him.
Mearest saw Dearest’s head fixed on someone. She looked to where Dearest’s head was facing and was surprised at what she saw.
Mearest spoke to the man in the suit
“D-Dad?”
