She's My Super Friend

Summary:

As Kara attends Alex & Kelly's wedding, a certain scarlet speedster shows up fashionably late and the two share a heartfelt encounter about life, mistakes, and the future.

Work Text:

Kara sat, idly watching as dozens danced and had the time of their lives at the wedding. Kara wanted to be happy for Alex and Kelly, and she was! She really was happy for them, but there was this aching feeling nagging at her in the pit of her stomach. It was an ache for something more, for someone to be with, and to be happy with.
She didn't want to be alone anymore, she wanted someone to be with, but the one she wanted, who'd she known she wanted for years, was married.

She chewed on her lip as she lazily stirred her drink, listening as the ice clanked agaisnt the glass, unresponsive to the laughing and cheering in front of her. Then she heard it, and her heart picked up its pace immediately, a nervousness etching itself in her bones, butterflies swarming in her stomach. That damn crackle of lightning, sending her hair flowing in the wake of his speed. Despite her nervousness, she turned to him a genuine wide smile, happy that he managed to make it.

"Hey!" Barry smiled at the woman as she rose to her feet, wrapping his arms around her and hugging her tightly. The two stayed in that embrace for a moment, enjoying finally seeing each other after so long. "I'm so sorry I'm late, its been a hectic day. " Barry said as he and Kara finally, yet reluctantly, broke off the hug.

"Its okay, all that matters is your here. Alex will be so happy you made it." She reassured him, and Barry caught sight of her expression, something was definitely bothering her, but he couldn't guage what. Kara brushed a strand of hair out of her face, sucking in a sharp breath.

"Hey, whats wrong?" Barry asked softly, and Kara looked up at him, tears poking at the corners of her eyes as she stared at the man. Kara flopped back into her seat at the table, followed by Barry who scooted closer to her. Kara opened her mouth to speak but was silent for a moment, unsure of how to speak what was plauging her to the man at the source of it all.
"Barry, I've been alone for so long, and I'm tired. I'm so happy for Alex, but I can't help but think and wish that this could've been me, that I could be as happy as she is right now, but I've never been more lost, and the man I love I- I can't have." She spoke, throat strained and Barry latched onto every word as she spoke, his gaze unwavering. "He's happy, married, he's got everything figured out, and I'm still trying to figure out how to balance my Kara and Supergirl lives."

Barry was silent for a moment, taking a deep breath as Kara wiped the tears from her eyes. It hurt to hear that she loved someone else, and if he could take a guess it was probably Mon-El, but she needed some sort of comfort, and he knew exactly how she felt right now. "Kara, I- You're not the only one that doesnt have everything figured out, believe it or not." He gave her a forced smile before his head fell.

"What do you mean?" Kara inquired.

A self-deprecating laugh escapes his lips as he stares at the grass. "I've fucked up so much in my life, Kara. He speaks earnestly, and she can hear the pain reverberate in his throat, and although she can't see his eyes, the sound of his voice tell her that tears are emerging, and her stomach sinks. "I've made so many mistakes, I don't know how to - I just..." He trails off as he raises his head and frantically tries to wipe the tears away, but Kara gently wraps her fingers around his wrist and pulls his hand away, telling him its okay to cry. Barry collapsed against her, and the two held each other tightly.

Barry pulled away from Kara, clearing his throat with embarrassment, profusely apologizing for getting so emotional. "Hey, stop." Kara told him, interweaving her fingers with his and gently brushing her thumb over his knuckles, an act that greatly comforted Barry. "You are incredible Barry, but everyone needs to let go once in a while, whenever you need to, just now that I'll be there." She said, and Barry lightly chewed on his cheek for a moment.

"Me and Iris got a divorce." Barry finally spoke, and Kara eyes practically bulged out of her head. "It was finalized a few weeks ago, and honestly, I'm okay." Barry said. "For so long I thought that Iris was the one for me, but I was wrong. I'd latched onto her after my mothers death because she was one of the only people who didn't call me crazy and I just became obsessed with her, but then we got married, and that feeling I had started to wane, until I realized I got married to the wrong woman."

Kara let out a deep breath at Barry's words. "Woah." She let out softly, trying to internect a little lightness to the conversation, which made Barry smile.

"The truth is I met the perfect woman years ago, before I got married, I just hadn't relaized it until now." Barry said, eyes locked on Kara, and her heart skipped a beat. "She's amazing. She's beautiful, caring, strong, independent, hopeful, and can ignite a spark with just her words." Barry's smile grew as he spoke, and Kara's heart only picked up its pace, a weightless feeling filling her stomach. "She's an unbelievable hero and singer, she never stops fighting for what she thinks is right, whether that be with her fists, or her words." A brief moment passed as Barry and Kara's gaze were lockdd on one another. "She's my super friend." He finished and Kara was breathless.

"Barry-"

"I love you." An interval of many seconds passed as Kara's eyes flickered over his. Even with her superhearing, she was sure she had somehow misheard him, but she hadn't, this was real. She blinked, mouth slightly parted before ever so slowly they both leaned forward, eyes falling closed, letting their lips find each other like two opposite poles of a magnet. The two moved like they were always destined to do this, clinging onto each other as their lips moved over one another languidly.

They slowly pulled apart, eyes fluttering open. They were both flushed and breathless, a smile overtaking their faces. "I love you too, Barry." Kara said breathlessly, her heart lurching, this was everything she had ever wanted.

Barry could not stop smiling as he rose to his feet, gazing across the grass to where everyone else was preparing for the bouquet toss, before he looked back to Kara and extended his hand. "Care to join me, Miss Danvers?" Kara was absolutely beaming as she took his hand and dramatically rose to her feet, making the two burst out in laughter as they walked towards the others.

Kara stepped into the crowd of women, Barry waking over to where J'onn, Winn, and Brainy stood, saying hello to them before his eyes landed on Kara once more. Kelly turned, tossing the boquet with vigor. Time seemed to slow as Barry watched it fly over the crowd, and his breath seemed to leave him in an instant as he watched Kara's fingers wrap around it and pull it towards her, beaming.

Alex and Kelly turned, clapping alongside everybody else as they looked at Kara. Alex took notice of her sisters gaze, and followed her eyeline to one scarlet speedster who was clapping alongside everyone else. "Finally." She whispered, before clapping even harder than before.

Kara pracrically skipped towards Barry as she held the boquet. "I wonder what lucky guy will get to marry you." Barry said, letting out a soft chuckle as Kara playfully looked to the sky as if in thought.

The girl of steel looked at him once more and dropped the boquet, pressing her lips against his tenderly, and the two shared a passionate embrace. "I love you." Kara said hole-heartedly as they pulled away.

"I love you too."
