Dusk of the Dragon

Summary:

A sea of glittering dust dances over the night sky. Eruhaben softly gazed at the silent figure on his lap. A gentle smile and an expression of being free could be felt from him. Cale reached his hands to the dragon’s face yet he spoke no words.

“My time will also come as well as yours. Do not regret the times we had not spent but cherish the memories we had created. Do not hate death nor worry about goodbyes, an end is simply a new beginning. It will fill you with sorrow but always remember I will always be by your side. Just keep me in your heart and I will exist in your memories forever.”

Work Text:

Hazy and weightless, Cale wandered like a cloud amongst an ocean of white blankness. A world was being created before his eyes yet, a familiar figure blossomed from the sea of flowers. Golden hair cascaded like waterfalls across broad shoulders and bright eyes. Eruhaben gestured at the floating Cale as the spring breeze blew him closer.

Resting his head atop the elder dragon’s lap, nature played a tune of bellows, chirps, and chatter. It was lively and full of vigor like the voice of nature. The softened lights penetrated the clouds as they lay restless over his skin, they wrapped around him like a warm blanket. Secure and tranquil, Cale felt the dragon stroke his hair.

Twilight glimmered over his long eyelashes as Eruhaben gently smiled. Gazing at the distant sky, he told Cale a little story.

“The light will blossom a flower and nurture a tree yet light is always accompanied by shadows and darkness. The day will always stay bright yet it must also turn to the night. The shadows of life will accompany you as long as you have the slightest flame within you. Only in blinding light or total darkness may they disappear. Yet the shadows mean you no harm. They are a reminder of what you once were.”

The ode of nature had turned silent for the moment as the two watched the darkening skies. Welcoming the myriad stars as they twinkle their little light from a faraway sky that one may never reach. The lights are a simple reminder of what they once were in the past. It reaches the twilight of the two gazes after a long journey.

“The stars are old yet they shine so brightly. Yet many of what we see now are simply past glories. A shine from a dying star that had finally reached our eyes. Time waits for no one, not even the stars.”

Eruhaben caressed the hands over his face as he wiped the tears falling from Cale’s face. Silent had descended between the two yet it was warm. They spent that moment wholly to themselves.

Cale had already closed his eyes long ago. He felt the dragon’s face fade away as if faring its goodbye. Opening his eyes wide, he saw the figure turn into a glimmer of dust. The wind blew it away as the dragon disappears into the horizon.

----

Aching heart and troubled breathing, Cale’s eyelids shuttered open. Sweat and tears dampened his body. Reaching to his chest, he felt his rapidly beating heart. It had all been a dream if one could even call it that. Yet the red-haired man felt an awful forbearing settle on his mind.

Kicking away layers of blankets, the young master rushed out of his chamber. A face riddled with worry and urgency flashed through the corridors as he rushed towards the golden dragon’s room.

Not bothering to knock, Cale frantically opened the door. Rapid heartbeats chilling from the image, a weight fell from his chest. He could finally breathe again as he leaped on the grumbling golden dragon. Streaks of tears moistened the nightgown as the dragon confusingly comforted the out-of-character human.

Eruhaben worriedly looked at the human crying on his lap. He had never seen Cale like this before yet he could only do his best to ask the man why he was here, doing this. Yet the redhead refused to say a word, his head buried in the embrace of the dragon.

Eruhaben sighed and accepted his fate. He lays down comfortably over his bed as he positioned Cale in his embrace. A drowsy spell lands over the two. The night was peaceful and silent yet the moon grinned over the two figures.
