Work Text:
A couple, Brooke and Darren are driving along towards mystic falls.
Darren says “An hour's drive to hear that crap. You know, it wasn't even a band. A guy with a guitar. An hour each way.”
And Brooke responds, “He wasn't that bad.”
“He sounded like James Blunt.”
“What's wrong with that?”
“We already have a James Blunt. One's all we need.”
“So why did you come?”
“Because I love you.”
“Nicely done. What's with all the fog?”
“It'll clear in a second.”
“Watch out!”
As Darren is driving along, he sees a patch of fog and continues through it, the ethereal clouds part to show a man holding a bottle just standing there in the middle of the road. Darren isn’t watching the road as the fog parts and the car rams into the man as he topples over the top of the vehicle.
Darren looks back over to Brooke to check on her “Are you okay?”
Visibly panicking Brooke says “We just hit someone! Oh my god!”
“Call for help.”
Darren gets out of the car quickly to see if the man is alright
“Come on, come on!” Brooke says as she’s dialing the 911.
As he arrives at the body, Darren yells “Please be alive! Oh, my god.”
The body is a middle-aged man named Alaric Saltzman who’s holding a large, nearly empty, bottle of bourbon, he’s alive but barely, very obviously drunk from the stench of alcohol and the bourbon on him. Darren is immediately relieved as he sees this body and shouts over to the car “It’s fine Brooke! It’s just Alaric Saltzman!”
Brooke who just got through to 911 lies and says, “Oh my god I’m sorry I dialed the wrong number!” and hangs up the phone.
Darren starts making sure he doesn’t have his fingerprints on anything as he gets up and runs back over to the car. “We have to go, we’ll run him over and make sure he’s dead and get out of here. The town will be better off without him.”
“Ok Darren, if, you’re sure. I know what he does so I trust you on that.”
Darren gets in the car, turns on the vehicle and revs the engine before backing the car over Alaric. As the tires drive over Alaric, there are loud cracking sounds from his bones, and he lets out a single cry of pain before death takes him. After passing over him Darren puts the car back in drive and floors the petal passing back over Alaric once more before continuing the drive. Alaric’s flattened body sitting there in a pool of blood and bourbon. Alaric is the same in death as he was in life, a sack of blood and bourbon.
Later down the road Darren says to Brooke beside him, “Don’t worry Brooke, the town will be better off without that drunken mess.”
“I know, but we killed someone.”
“We killed someone who can barely be considered a person. No one will look for his killer, no one will look for me. I love you Brooke, if it comes to it, I can turn myself in and you won’t be involved.”
“I love you too Darren, we can get through this together.”
Alaric’s body was found the next day, the police assumed it was an animal attack and never looked for his killer. Darren and Brook were then later killed by Damon Salvatore as normal.
