Work Text:
Rumi knew this could ruin her. She knew this could unravel her seams, snip the ends and cut her off from any sort of hope she had left. It could be her downfall, her last hurrah and her final bow before her rationality was stripped away from her.
She had so much to lose.
And he was close to leaving.
Sitting on her couch with a bottle of champagne was not a good way to start her night. She had made plans, given up and cut him off completely. It was cruel and most of all stupid for her to leave him dangling over the edge. She loved Keigo, she really did, and that was what was killing her.
He was smitten for someone else. It was obvious; the swooning, the far off looks, the soft smile he had when he talked about a ‘friend’ of his. Rumi knew it all too well, he used to get huge crushes way back when he was a teeanger, mostly on celebrities or some random person he met one time.
But this time felt different, he looked happy. Truly happy. His eyes, ringed with eyeliner and shining a beautiful golden brown color would glimmer when he spoke about this person. His nose would wrinkle a little when he laughed at recalling a joke this person made, the sound like bells chiming in Rumi’s head.
He’d blush at the ears and snort when she’d tease him but go back to playing it off like it was nothing. It wasn’t nothing and they both knew that. This was much more than a measly crush, it was deeper than that.
She wished he would look like that when he talked about her.
“Augh, damnit, Rumi!” She shouted and slammed her foot on the floor, grimacing at the cracking sound that followed. Another problem. She cursed viciously and put the bottle up to her lips, closing her eyes and tipping her hand back as she let the stinging bubbles wash down her throat.
Keigo was oblivious to her otherwise clear hints about her romantic feelings towards him which made it all the more frustrating. She had had these dumb emotions for too long. A year and a half, maybe? Shit. She swallowed another taste of the champagne.
It hurt. All of it hurt. Her being painfully idiotic for letting her guard down and falling for that birdbrain, him being interested in someone else, all of it. Her heart ached in her chest and she rubbed her eyes to try to stop herself from letting another tear be wasted on him.
He was her best friend and she loved him. Loved him with all her heart, loved Hawks with all she had, and loved Keigo with every tear she let roll down her cheeks. She wanted to kiss him, to make him see that she was right there.
She drained the bottle and sighed.
“Whatever.” She mumbled. “I’ll be fine without him.”
That was a painful lie and she knew it.
