Work Text:

“Marinette, I just left the office. I know I’m very late. I’m sorry. Don’t wait up,” Adrien apologised to the phone.

He’d meant to leave at least two hours earlier but this was the evening when everyone seemed to need him and now it was too late. Not that one could tell from the soft light outside in the warm summer evening. It was the time people came outside after the hot day.

But Marinette had had to finish a big commission over the last week and she was running on barely any sleep. She needed to rest and he didn’t want her to waste a free evening by waiting for him.

“Of course I’ll wait for you, kitty,” she replied simply and he couldn’t help smiling as he ended the call.

An old lady was gathering her things on the sidewalk as he walked by, a few wilted bouquets beside her.

Adrien smiled even wider as he stopped in front of her.

“Excuse me, can I have one?”

“Here, young man, this is the only one that still looks fresh,” she handed the flowers to him with a happy smile. “Your lady is waiting for you?” He started, the correct assumption shocking him until he realised that the woman had no idea who he or Marinette were.

“Yes,” he nodded.

“You love her very much. You’re not looking for an expensive concoction of flowers to impress her with.”

He’d done that before. But he also knew that Marinette cherished the attention, not the size of the gift or how expensive it was.

“She deserves the best and the best is what comes from the heart.”

“You’re right. She’s lucky to have you.”

“It’s me who’s the lucky one,” Adrien sighed, still not believing that he was lucky enough to really be with his lady, even after all these years.

He slipped enough euros to cover all the bouquets in the woman’s hand and walked away briskly with a “have a nice evening” before she could feel self-conscious about it.

True to her word, Marinette met him at the door.

“Beautiful flowers for a beautiful lady,“ he declared, handing her the bouquet. Her face lit up and Adrien patted himself on the back for the impulsive decision to bring her something to make her happy.

He took her in his arms, reveling in the simple feeling of having her there with him. When their lips met, he realised that he was also very happy that she’d waited up for him. Having a few peaceful minutes with her at the end of the long day was exactly what he needed.

“Where did you find them?” She asked, eyeing the colourful bunch of flowers.

“A fairy godmother out on the street gave them to me,” he grinned as he took his shoes off.

“Silly kitty,” she giggled. “Are you hungry?”

“Yes.”

“Hurry up then,” she called over her shoulder as she headed to the kitchen to put the flowers in water.

Yes, the evening was not ruined.
