Chapter 1: What the heck is that?

Chapter Text

Huh? The shy boy looked up. He heard something, something that didn’t match the normal sounds of his home.

A flashy color quickly came into view for just a second. The boy believed it to be black, and an electric orange. Strange. Those two colors were common, but not with that intensity and vibrance. He tilted his head and peaked out from behind the beautifully colored plants.

His red and white hair matched his lower body. The boy craned his neck to catch sight of whatever he had spotted. Suddenly, the black and orange thing came into view.

It looked like the boy that was curiously staring at it, but the lower half of it was… split in two. At the end of the split… whatever it was, were two large, deformed flipper things.

He couldn’t describe it any better. On the two split things, there was a piece of cloth covering its waist. The cloth was black and orange. The curious teen decided to call the split things ‘seaweed sticks’. A fitting name for the thing’s lower body.

He wondered what was underneath the cloth that covered some of its waist. He stared at it a moment, a faint memory of a story tugging at his mind.

The creature had spiky hair, and red eyes. The thing’s upper body looked pretty normal, besides its ears. They were shaped weirdly, kind of round. Of course! It was a Tamataki! Wait, a Tamataki?! Those things weren’t real, they were myths!

And if they did exist, they certainly shouldn’t be here! The boy was about to swim back to his family, but his curiosity got the best of him. He saw the Tamataki move its arms, and seaweed sticks side to side as it made its way to the surface.

Oh right! It needed air, a combination of nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide that was extremely hard to breathe. Inhaling it physically hurt.

When he was younger, breathing that air was used as punishment by his father. He shuddered, the teen disliked thinking about it.

He changed his location, moving up to a higher piece of coral. The Tamataki was out of sight, but he guessed he'd come back. He was willing to wait.

“KACCHAN!” He huffed. Midoriya was trying to find him, but he had run, or rather, swam off.

“Mr. Aizawa, I’m gonna go look for him.” Mr. Aizawa turned to the problem child. “That’s what you have been doing.” he bluntly pointed out. “I mean like, in the water, sir.” The teacher nodded, indicating that he was all clear. “Just don’t…. Idk get eaten by sharks.”

Izuku Midoriya stared at his sensei. “Of course not! Wait, there are sharks??” Mr. Aizawl looked up. “Not that I know of, but knowing you who knows what you might run into.” He shrugged.

The green haired boy facepalmed.

“I’ll help you Deku!” The voice belonged to a bright girl, Uraraka. “Okay, if I’m longer than 15 minutes, you can help me look for kacchan.” He said.

“You mean if you’re not dead.” Mr Aizawa muttered. “What was that sir?” Uraraka asked.

“Nothing, just help the problem- I mean midoriya get ready.”

The ash blonde whipped around. What was that? Probably just a fish, he told himself.

But fish didn’t normally move that fast. Whatever it was, it definitely wasn’t a shark.

Unless it was a really small, colorful one, but that wouldn’t make sense. It didn’t really matter anyways since the boy wasn’t scared of sharks.

He tried to yell at the fish, or whatever, to come out but all that left his mouth was an angry storm of bubbles.

Wow, he thought, that’ll definitely help me find that thing. The boy swam around.

Sometimes not being able to breathe water sucked, he made his way to the surface for a gulp of air.

He gasped, how long had he been under water? It didn’t really matter, he thought as he caught his breath and dived back under.

The little Sekara gasped. There was another one! This one had rounder eyes and green coral hair. If it weren’t for his floppy seaweed sticks, he would fit right in.

The teen desperately wanted to interact with the Tamataki, but was too nervous.

Suddenly he saw the Tamataki’s head swivel around. He quickly moved down, to avoid being seen. He sighed as he peeked just his eyes above the rock.

Snatch!

Something was grasping his tail. He tried to wriggle out of the grip but to no avail.

He wriggled and squirmed as he was being dragged to the surface, the young fish felt like he had no control.

Soon the boy’s head broke the surface, and the sharp air around him began to burn his gills as he was heaved onto a platform of sorts.

“Would ya look at that.” A voice said in awe. The teen’s eyebrows furrowed together.

He didn’t recognize that language. The Sekara didn’t understand it. He looked up, it was the Tamataki, the one with red eyes.
