Star Gazing

“You ever wonder about it?”
“About what exactly?”
“You know, it?”
“I have no idea what you mean.”
“Oh, stop playing about.”

Fox looked over at Wolf as the two were watching the night sky from the balcony. The sight of these two in particular doing anything that wasn’t fighting would have been seen as alien to many people, the supposed destined rivals for life who were to fight to the death until one of them prevailed. The two were fully aware of the whole publicity stunt that had been made around them, which made it all the more ironic given their current relationship.

“To be honest, I don’t really care about what they have to say”, Wolf said with a roll of his good eye, “you know they’ve never got one nice thing to say about me anyway.”

“That’s true, but you did work for a crazy, dictatorial scientist beforehand, you know”, Fox replied knowingly, “not the best first impression for a lot of people.”

“You mean the same guy that Pepper sent into exile that allowed him to manifest instead of, I dunno, putting the bastard behind bars?” Wolf quizzed with a raised brow.

“I...okay, you’ve got a point there, I don’t understand the man myself half the time”, Fox admitted, “I mean, it’s quite a gamble to put so much trust in a mercenary team of just four pilots against an armada…”

“Guess he knew that you’d be hella lucky to make it out alive”, Wolf smirked with a nudge to Fox’s side, “who knows, maybe he tried to set you up for a future partner.”

“Okay, you know that’s complete bunk”, Fox rolled his eyes, “though, you could say the circumstances began in a different way...I think back to the Aparoids…”

“Oh, you mean that time you and the gang came up into my base and started shooting at random?” Wolf asked in mock surprise.

“Yeah, that...that one...I guess I never properly...apologized for it…” Fox said awkwardly.

“Eh, I’d say we were even given I saved your ass twice during the whole thing”, Wolf replied with a dismissive wave of his hand, “I heard you were worried about little old me after me, Leon, and Panther served to track the Apariods while you infiltrated the queen.”

“Yeah...I was...I didn’t know why at the time, I’d only just worked with you as an ally the first time around, but...something came up…” Fox admitted, shifting his feet slightly, “I felt...genuine concern for you...something I felt akin to the loss of my father…”

Wolf looked to see Fox growing slowly more uneasy as he continued, putting a paw on his shoulder. “Hey, hey, hey, it’s no big deal, I got out alive, didn’t I?”

“Yeah...it came as a huge relief to me when you did...and then I saw you off work...you were more...casual than I was expecting…” Fox replied.

“What, did you think the Big, Bad Wolf O’Donnell didn’t have a personal life of something?” Wolf asked with obvious jest, “You wouldn’t be the first one to assume so, apparently, if you worked for a ‘space nazi’, you don’t treasure anything besides money and power...or so I’ve been told. Eh, who gives a shit, I’m just livin’ my own life as I do.”

“Heh, you’re oddly optimistic for a war criminal”, Fox grinned, “though, maybe that’s due in part to me putting in a good word for your assistance.”

“Appreciate it, Foxy”, Wolf replied with a grin back, “nice to know someone else cares, sees me more than just your anti or whatever.”

“Hehe, yeah…” Fox chuckled before he looked up at the stars. It was half clear nice with a few clouds scattered amongst the sky. “Do you think...that there’s a possibility...nah, forget I brought it up…”

“C’mon, you can tell me…” Wolf said in a tone that Fox knew he meant it. The vulpine gave a sigh before he opened his mouth once more.

“I sometimes think...that there’s a chance...my father didn’t die...that he’s still out there…” Fox admitted, “I know it sounds crazy and desperate, but...I miss him, you know...even to this day…”

Wolf saw Fox’s shoulders slump as he looked down to the city below, a solemn expression on his face. Once more, the lupine put a paw on the smaller male’s shoulder.

“Hey...look at me…” Wolf murred as he picked up Fox’s chin with his paw, “don’t you worry about a thing...I’m sure wherever he is, he’s happy that his son turned out alright...I know I am…”

Fox gave a sigh in return, “You really like to put on the sentiment, don’t you?”

“Hey, it’s why ya’ love me…” Wolf smirked as he booped his nose against Fox’s before the vulpine in turn caught him off-guard with a kiss.

“And that’s why you love me”, Fox replied with a cheeky grin.

“Aaaaaaah, you’re a sneaky one, aren’t ya?” Wolf replied with a stronger kiss back, “C’mon, let’s warm up inside.”

Fox gave a smile as Wolf lead him back into the confines of their apartment, nuzzling against the side of his arm. He knew he had strange taste in men when he discovered feelings for the taller male, but to him, it wasn’t of concern in the slightest.
