Work Text:
It started when Wooyoung spilled coffee on his favorite sweater, making him late for class. He rushes to his first class of the day only to find out it was cancelled and the teacher forgot to inform them. Annoyed that he had rushed for no reason, he turned on his heel to head in the direction of his favorite campus coffee shop. He had been up late finishing a project from that class that was due today, and he was exhausted and wanted nothing more than to go back to bed.
He was walking back to his dorm when his phone started ringing. He smiled seeing his mom's caller ID, quickly answering it. “Hi, mom!”
Wooyoung was excited. His family was coming to visit for his birthday the next day, but more importantly, they would be meeting his boyfriend, Yunho. They had been dating since the end of their senior years, but since they went to separate schools and were busy throughout the summer, they hadn’t had the time to meet each other's parents. Wooyoung was hoping his mom was calling to hash out the last minute details they hadn’t discussed, but based on how soft her voice was he should have been clued in that something was wrong.
“Hi, Wooyoungie,” her voice was more gentle than he was used to, “how’s your day?”
Wooyoung told her about the morning he was having, spending more time than he’d like talking about the teacher that failed to tell them about the cancelled class. He ended his rant with a sigh, “but, I only have one class left and then I’m going to Yunho’s. He’s really excited to meet you guys! What time are you coming?”
“Actually, that’s why I’m calling.” Wooyoung’s heart dropped, “Kyungmin has the flu and I don’t want to leave him alone. Your father couldn’t get the day off, either. I’m so sorry, Wooyoungie. We were looking forward to meeting Yunho and as soon as Kyungmin is better we’ll visit, okay?”
Wooyoung stood outside his building, processing what she said. Of course he can’t say no to that. Kyungmin is his favorite person and he’s not looking to push him into anything if he’s sick. And his dads job is demanding, he’s not surprised he wasn’t able to get the day off. Someone has to stay home and take care of Kyungmin, and Wooyoung wasn’t going to ask his mom to get a sitter just so he could see her. He sighed, taking a deep breath, “It’s okay, mom. We’ll make plans when he’s better, yeah? Give him a lot of love for me and tell him we’ll FaceTime tomorrow.”
He can pretend all he wants over the phone that it’s fine, but in reality he’s upset. Wooyoung had been looking forward to them meeting, and Yunho was so excited he looked like a giant puppy. How was he supposed to tell him it’s not happening now?
They talk for a few more minutes, Wooyoung having to reassure her multiple times that it’s fine they won’t be there tomorrow. Eventually, she says she needs to get back to Kyungmin and makes a promise to call him tomorrow before hanging up. Wooyoung dug his door key out of his bag, hoping one of his roommates would be home. When he entered, he could hear the sound of a video game coming from San’s room and he made his way over.
He walked behind San in his gaming chair, falling onto the bed. San didn’t bother to look at him when he entered, used to Wooyoung coming in to hang out while he played a game. Wooyoung let his mind wander to the conversation with his mom. Something felt strange about the whole thing and it left him feeling uneasy. His parents had always been supportive of what he did and who he dated and had never backed out of meeting a girlfriend, so why did they cancel the day before when it was to meet a boyfriend?
“What’s going through your head? You’re thinking too loud.” San asked, finally turning to face him.
“I’m confused.” Wooyoung stared at the ceiling, hands clasped over his stomach, “my family cancelled.”
“Why?”
“Kyungmin is sick and my dad couldn’t get off work. My mom said we’d reschedule, and I trust that, but I can’t help thinking it’s something else. What if they don’t support me dating Yunho?”
San stood and moved to the bed to sit next to his friend, “Why would you think that?”
“Think about it,” Wooyoung sat up, facing San, “You’ve known them for years and they’ve always made who I’m dating a big deal. I finally come out to them, am dating an amazing guy, and they bail?”
San studied Wooyoung’s face trying to find if he was being serious or not. He reached forward, placing a hand on his knee, “do you honestly think they would use Kyungmin as an excuse? Your parents are blunt, especially your dad. You know they would have just told you if they didn’t want to meet Yunho.”
“I know, you’re right.” And he did know that San was right. If his parents didn’t support him, they would have let them know and made it clear. “It’s stupid. Why would I doubt them?”
“Exactly. Besides, your mom said they’d reschedule and you know she’d never miss the chance to see you.”
Wooyoung laughed, “I already told you that you’re right. What more do you want?”
San stood, flicking Wooyoung’s forehead, “Stop thinking and go nap.” Wooyoung stood from the bed, “Oh! I saw your sweater so I threw it in the wash.”
“If I wasn’t dating Yunho, I’d kiss you.”
“Disgusting. Get out of my room.”
Wooyoung laughed as he headed out the door, dodging a swing from San on his way. San, Wooyoung, and their third roommate, Yeosang, had been friends since middle school. Wooyoung knew if he could trust anyone with what goes through his head, it was them. They had a very strict ‘no judgement’ rule between the three of them. Wooyoung wandered to his room, pulling his phone out to set an alarm and send a quick text to Yunho before changing and climbing into bed for a nap.
When he woke up, he was feeling a little better, but all he wanted was to see Yunho. His boyfriend has this comforting presence to him that made Wooyoung feel safe and like anything he was worried about doesn’t matter. He only has one class left, and then he could wrap Yunho in a hug and not let him go for days.
His class felt like it dragged, and the wait for the bus was even longer. It was one of those rare times that Wooyoung wished he had his license or that Yunho lived within walking distance. Although, his boyfriend having his own place was not only a quiet space to escape to, but it was nice not having to fight for alone time with him. Yunho had given him a spare key a few weeks ago and as he pulled it out to unlock the door his thoughts went to how he was going to break the news about their plans to him. On the bright side though, at least they would be spending the entire day alone.
Usually when Wooyoung came over he would find Yunho sitting at his desk typing away or sitting on his couch playing a game, most of the lights in his place turned on. This time however, the lights were off and he couldn’t see Yunho anywhere. He got worried, thinking Yunho had made other plans and just forgot to tell him. He quickly turned the lights on, pausing when he looked around.
Hanging from the ceiling in the living room and kitchen were black and grey streamers. Sitting on the kitchen table was a small birthday cake surrounded by some of Wooyoung’s favorite snacks, and a gift bag. Yunho came walking from his room, freezing when he saw Wooyoung standing near the front door, “I wasn’t expecting you so soon.”
“Class let out early..” Wooyoung said, eyeing his boyfriend, “what is all this?”
“I know your birthday is tomorrow, but San told me you were upset over your parents cancelling, and I just wanted to do something to cheer you up.”
Wooyoung could cry if he wasn’t so stunned. He doesn’t think anyone has ever gone all out for him like this before. Looking past Yunho to the living room, he could see movies spread across the table, and a stack of blankets on the couch. His focus shifted back to Yunho when he moved towards the table, picking up the gift bag and passing it to him, “here. Open this.”
“You didn’t have to do all this.” He mumbled, “and you didn’t have to get me anything.”
Yunho only smiled, “Trust me. Just open it.”
Who was Wooyoung to deny that face?
He gently took the bag, pulling the tissue paper out and putting it on the table. He peeked in, spotting some clothing and reached in to pull it out. He’d never admit it to anyone, but pulling out Yunho’s favorite sweatshirt, also Wooyoung’s favorite to steal, made him tear up. Yunho was still smiling at him. He ushered Wooyoung towards the bedroom, telling him to change and then they would settle in and watch movies while they waited for the food he ordered to arrive.
Wooyoung knew seeing Yunho would make him feel better. He was positive that just being around the other would do the trick, but Yunho took him by surprise and went above and beyond. He always knew just what to say or do to make Wooyoung feel good. Wooyoung wants to keep Yunho around for as long as he can.
He surged forward, pulling Yunho into a hug, “I love you so much” he mumbled into his chest before pulling away enough to tilt his head up for a kiss.
“I love you, too. Now go change! We have a busy night.”
It wasn’t a busy night or eventful, but it was just what Wooyoung was wanting. The couple watched movies, ate dinner, and talked about their plans for the next day. Wooyoung wasn’t sure what he wanted to do for his birthday anymore, but he knew as long as Yunho was there he didn’t care.
Wooyoung’s birthday started off simple, but amazing. Yunho woke him up by pressing kisses all over his face and a small tray of breakfast. He followed it up by surprising Wooyoung with a FaceTime call to his parents, introducing himself and having casual conversation with them. It warmed his heart to see the way Yunho interacted with his parents and talked with his brother. After the call, Yunho told Wooyoung to get up and get dressed because he was taking him out. And by that he meant taking Wooyoung to all his favorite shops and spoiling him, despite what Wooyoung was telling him. Wooyung thought not having his parents there was going to make him upset all day, but spending the day with his boyfriend was better than he imagined.
They were back at Yunho’s after their long day out, Yunho telling Wooyoung to sit and watch a movie while he made dinner. Wooyoung couldn’t focus on the movie, not when he could see Yunho moving around the kitchen, putting everything Wooyoung has taught him to work.
Everything worked out in the end. He loves his family more than anything, but spending the day with only Yunho was perfect.
Yunho called Wooyoung over to the table, setting a plate down in front of him before sitting next to him. The two ate with casual conversation about anything they could think of and Wooyoung was struck with just how happy he is. Yunho had turned the whole day around and he wouldn’t have asked for anything else. Towards the end of dinner, Yunho cleared his throat.
“I have one more gift for you.”
He grabbed Wooyoung’s hand, pulling him from his chair and taking him towards the bedroom. Wooyoung stood in the middle of the room while Yunho walked towards the dresser, opening a few of the drawers and showing Wooyoung the insides.
Empty.
Wooyoung frowned, confused, looking back to Yunho.
Yunho smiled nervously, “I love you, Wooyoung. I look forward to seeing you everyday and spending all of our time together. So… I was wondering if you’d want to move in with me?”
Wooyoung stared in shock. Move in with Yunho? A small part of him thinks it’s too soon, but that’s a very small part. The other much bigger part of him wants to come home to Yunho everyday. He imagined being around his biggest comfort all the time and the thought alone fills him with joy.
He rushes to Yunho, pulling him down so he can easily slot their lips together, “Yes! Yes, of course I’ll move in with you!”
It was going to be a lot of work, he’s already aware. Wooyoung knows he has a temper and it can get in the way of things, but he would do whatever it takes to make this go as easily and smoothly as possible. He can’t wait to take this chance on them, and he’s ready to always come home to Yunho.
