The first word Inej learned in Kerch was 'clean'. Cleanliness was the second virtue. Cleanliness was to be aspired to at all costs. The second word she learned was 'basement'. All she knew was that she never could be taken to the basement. She never saw what happened to the girls down there, but she heard their screams well enough.
