Work Text:
February 14th, a singles least favorite day. Especially when your crush is on a date with someone else. Maybe using her punching bag as a way to take out of feeling wasn’t healthy but she’d worry about that later.
“Arghh!” Kohaku threw a right hook and shook the bag a bit.
Can’t this day just be over yet?
Like a sick reminder to her or something. 3 years and she had still yet to confess to Amaryllis. Amaryllis was popular and had plenty of admirers. Kohaku always felt like she had a leg up on the others as Amaryllis’s friends but she was worried about what it would do to their friendship.
Kohaku took a few deep breaths. She hadn’t noticed how of breath she was
“Damn it-,” Kohaku groaned.
Kohaku got the towel to dry herself and grabbed her water bottle.
“Hey Kohaku,” Ruri peaked her head into the garage.
“Yeah, Ruri?” Kohaku replied.
“You’re phone is ringing,”
“Who is it?” Kohaku asked, between sips of her water.
“Amaryllis,” Ruri replied.
Kohaku also spits out the water was drinking. “Arcck couuu,” Kohaku coughed. “What?”
“Yeah, she’s called twice already and Mom asked me to just give you the phone,” Ruri explained.
“Right right,” Kohaku whipped the beads of water on her chin. “Thanks, Ruri,” Kohaku walked up and took the phone from her sister’s hand. “Can you umm… you know,”
“Hmmm? Awww come on you never tell me anything about you and her,” Ruri whined.
“Rurui nee,” Kohaku begged.
“Alright alright,” Ruri turned and closed the door behind her.
Kohaku pursed her lips together when she saw Amaryllis’s name pop up. The picture was of her and Kohaku at homecoming they had gone to freshman year.
My wife🌺
It was a small joke between friends. Kohaku and Amaryllis were always close to Amaryllis would joke that Kohaku was her wife in some past life.
What could she want? Isn’t she on her date? Did something go wrong? No no Kohaku, just answer it.
Kohaku swiped her finger over the screen.
“Hey Ama, What’s up?” Kohaku tried to sound casual.
“Kohakuuuuuuu~,” Amaryllis sang over the phone.
“Ahhh Hey Ama, is something up?”
“It’s Kirisime, She didn’t show, and it’s been an hour,” Amaryllis explained, her voice breaking a bit.
“Oh my god, Ama I’m so sorry,” Kohaku replied.
“I-I was really looking forward to it too,” Amaryllis hiccuped. “Ahh, I think my makeup is running,”
Any jealousy Kohaku felt left and was repace with anger at Kirisame and how much she wanted to be there for Amaryllis.
“Kohaku… I don’t know what to do,” Amaryllis confessed quietly. “I told my dad was going on a date with a boy and I don’t want to have to explain to him what happened.
Kohaku clenched her fist and without thinking. “I’m coming to pick you up,”
“Huh?”
“I’m going to pick you up. Just tell your dad that you’re staying longer,”
“Wait Kohaku- you don’t have to,”
“No It’s fine Ama, just give me a second to get dressed. I’ll be right over,”
“Wait Kohaku-,”
“What?”
“Thank you,”
“Of course Ama. I’ll always be there for you,”
“I know… You’re kind of stuck with me. I’ll send you where I am,” Amaryllis explained.
“I’ll be there,” Kohaku hung up and ran upstairs to her room.
Kohaku went to her and Ruri’s bathroom to quickly clean off her face and get dressed in a sweatshirt and jeans. Kohaku grabbed her license and walked our her room.
“Mooommm, Dadddd!! I’m going to take the car!” Kohaku jumped down the stairs.
“Huh? What for?” Byakuya asked.
“Going to pick up Ama,” Kohaku took the keys off the wall, and with that Kohaku was out the door.
Amaryllis knew how silly she must have looked. On a bench with her knees to her chest for the past 10 minutes. She didn’t want to show her face but didn’t want o get anyone’s attention.
Just wait until Kohaku gets here. She’ll be here soon. Damn it Kirisame. Getting my hopes up like that. Where the fuck is she even? If she even tries to apologize tomorrow I will- ugghhhh! Leaving me at the mall all alone. That fucking bitch! With no much as a ‘sorry’.
Amaryllis felt someone looking at her, so she looked up to see who it was. There was her best friend walking up to her.
“Hey Kohaku,” Amaryllis tried to smile.
“Her Ama,” Kohaku sat down next to Amaryllis on the bench. “You feeling alright?”
“Better… mostly just mad now,” Amaryllis answered. “Damn that Kirisame,”
“Yeah, fuck her,” Kohaku leaned back. “Like her lost honestly. Better off without her,”
“Heh, Dodged a bullet huh?” Amaryllis lightly laughed.
“Oh hell yeah. If Kirisame doesn’t know how amazing you are that’s her problem,”
Amaryllis smiled at her friend’s words. “Hey, Kohaku,”
“Yeah?”
“Let’s just hang out today instead,” Amaryllis leaned her head on Kohaku’s shoulder.
“Sure,” Kohaku smiled.
“Let’s go to your place, you kind of smell,” Amaryllis teased.
“Hey!”
Amaryllis was in Kohaku’s bathroom as she fixed up her makeup. The smeared eyeliner, mascara, and eye shadow. Amaryllis whipped it off with a cotton pad.
“Hey Kohaku, you think we could go on a picnic?”
“Same spot as normal?” Kohaku asked, from the shower.
“Yeah, it’s our spot after all,” Amaryllis hummed.
“Sure dear ,” Kohaku sarcastically replied.
“I’ll start packing then!” Amaryllis clapped her hands together.
“Pack some strawberries, please. Mom just got some,” Kohaku called.
“Got itt~” Amaryllis stepped out of the bathroom and went downstairs to the kitchen. Kohaku always kept the picnic basket in the cabinet next to the dishwasher.
“Oh hey, Amaryllis,” Lillian turned around the corner. “You looking for something?”
“Hey Mrs. Lillian, and yeah. Just looking for the picnic basket,”
“You going out again?” Lillian reached into the fridge for a water bottle.
“Yup! Oh hey, can you grab the strawberries please,” Amaryllis politely asked.
“Same place as usual?” Lillian got the Strawberried from the fridge and closed the door.
“Yup, It’s been a rough day so i thought why not?”
“Awww did something happen?”
“Flaky valentines date,” Amaryllis grabbed the picnic basket. “Felt me waiting for an hour before I just accepted she wasn’t coming,” Amaryllis explained.
“Ohh what a jerk,” Lillian huffed.
“I had that happen to me all the time when I was your age. Some people are just jerks, and I’m sorry you had to deal with that,”
“It’s fine now,” Amaryllis sighed. “I think I prefer this more than just going on a basic date at the mall,” Amaryllis grinned. “Besides I get free food this way,”
“I forgot how alike you and Kohaku can be,” Lillian playfully sighed. “Have fun on y’all’s date,” Lillian sang and walked out the kitchen area.
“Aye wait??” Amaryllis was going to try and protest but Lillian was already gone.
Oh shit this is totally a date…
Amaryllis hid her face in her hands.
A date… With Kohaku. Ahhhhh! Why am I blushing so hard?
.
.
.
Amaryllis and Kohaku’s ‘spot’, as they called it, was in a more hidden part of the park. Past a few trees, Passing the old blue bench with the paint chipping, was a small field. Kind of like a clearing in the trees.
“So, care to tell me what’s in the basket?” Kohaku asked.
“Honestly I didn’t have much time so a few snacks,” Amaryllis answered.
“That’s fine. I kind of already ate,” Kohaku shrugged.
Kohaku rolled out the blanket in the flat area of the clearing. Amaryllis and Kohaku sat down and Amaryllis opened the basket. Inside was a few apples, strawberries and some of Suika’s Lunchables Amaryllis may have taken.
“Pfttt,” Kohaku tried to hold in her laugher. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. This is a whole fest,” She teased.
“Hey, I tried!” Amaryllis blushed.
“It’s fine It’s fine, just might need to get Suika more Lunchables..,”
“Sorry sorry, just been so long since I had one,” Amaryllis explained.
“And of course you got the pizza one,” Kohaku teased.
“Aww come on, It’s the best one,” Amaryllis protested.
“Yeah but you don’t add the sauce,”
“God knows what they put in Kohaku!”
“Ama please,” Kohaku burst out laughing.
“This coming from the girl who likes the chicken nugget Lunchable?” Amaryllis huffed.
“Ok ok,” Kohaku tried to say something back but kept laughing.
“Since we were 8 Kohaku,” Amaryllis light pushed.
“And you- you been stuck me be for 8 yearsss~,”
“You’re so mean,” Amaryllis playfully rolled her eyes.
“Aww, Ama, I’m- pftt I’m sorry” Kohaku wheezed.
Amaryllis started to laugh too. She couldn’t keep up the act much longer. They both got so lost in laugher Kohaku lost her balance and fall back on the grass.
“H-How did you even manage to do that,” Amaryllis teased.
“Like this!” Kohaku pulled Amaryllis‘s arm and made Amaryllis ball back too.
“Aughh you jerk!” Amaryllis punched Kohaku’s arm lightly.
“Awww come on Ama, you love me,” Kohaku smiled.
“Pftt says you,” Amaryllis crossed her arms.
“Awww how mean,”
“Yeah yeah, I love you too,” Amaryllis sighed. Obviously, Kohaku meant platonic love but Amaryllis was still a bit flustered. “This is nice though. Thanks, Kohaku,”
“Of course Ama,” Kohaku reached for Amaryllis’d hand.
Holding hands was something normal for the two but still….
Amaryllis let go of Kohaku’s hand and moved over a bit closer to Kohaku.
“Ama?”
Amaryllis rest her head on Kohaku’s chest and cuddle closer to her friend. “It means a lot,”
“Geez Ama,” Kohaku looked away but Amaryllis still saw how red her friend’s neck was.
Kohaku put her hand over Amaryllis’s shoulder to keep her there. Amaryllis rested her eyes and the two just relaxed there for a bit.
