Perfect Thanksgiving

Summary:

First Thanksgiving Sam and reader have together.

Work Text:

Hearing a knock at the door I wipe my hands on my apron as I close the oven door after checking that all the dishes. Waving Sam off I walk out of the kitchen to the front door. Today was Thanksgiving and Sam and I’s first holiday together. We had both decided that it would be nice to have a family Thanksgiving of sorts. Dean obviously was there and then we each decided to invite a close friend. It just turned out that our close friends are mutual friends of each other. Opening the front door I see my best friend Abby dressed in what we lovingly refer to as 80’s feminism professor chic and behind them stood Castiel the tall angel dressed in his usual backwards tie and trench coat.
“How was y’all’s trip?”
“What do you mean OUR trip?! We didn’t come together!”
Looking around Abby I notice their beloved hearse dubbed The Reaper and Cass’s pimp mobile both parked behind the Impala.
“Ooookaay. Well how was your two completely separate trips?”
Pushing around me Abby mutters under their breath, “shut up I’ll fight you. I swear.”
Abby has been my hunting partner for the last few months and a childhood friend before that so their gruff threats had little to no effect on me. Putting my hands up in surrender I held the door open for the silent and pensive Castiel.
“ I’m glad you could make it to our very human holiday,” Leading him into the house I add,” Don’t worry about them.”indicating Abby’s retreating back,” They can be prickly but they still care. Especially about you.”
Smiling and offering a short nod Cass mutters a thank you.
“Dean is outside with the Turkey frier and Sam is in the kitchen manning the ovens for me. You are more than welcome to make yourself at home.” Castiel stood awkwardly in the hallway looking unsure of what to do.” Abby is probably out back with the livestock. Also I have a bee hive if you would like to say Hi.” Now smiling Cass nods confidently “ Yes I think I’ll do that. I’ll make sure your Queen is taking care of the hive.”

“You do that. Report back when you know more.”
He walks down the hallway to the backdoor and I head into the kitchen where Sam was purposefully mashing potatoes. Sam looked like a man straight out of a hallmark movie maybe about a lumberjack that has a soft domestic side. He was wearing his typical plaid flannel shirt with his sleeves rolled up, and worn jeans that somehow had gotten flour handprints on the back pockets. The muscles and veins in his forearms flexed and relaxed pleasantly at rhythmic intervals while he switched back and forth from mashing to stirring.
Walking up behind him I wrap my arms around his middle laying my head on his back. He stopped what he was doing to slightly lean into my touch and take my hand placed around his middle.
“Thank you for helping. I’d much rather watch you mash potatoes than do it myself.”
Sam chuckled making me feel the rumble it made through his whole body.
“I’ll bet you do. I saw you staring.”
“It wasn’t staring it was supervising!’
Turning in my embrace to face me Sam smiled down at me while taking my face in his flour covered hands. Not caring that my cheeks were now covered in flour dust i waited fro him to kiss me. But he was taking his sweet time bending down to meet my lips. Growing impatient I grab him by the back of the neck to help myself stretch up to reach him. I give him a deep and meaningful kiss that quickly leaves us breathless before its interrupted by a groan.
“ Do you have to do that right next the mashed taters!?” Dean dramatically said
“Yes.” I said simply before turning back to my amused boyfriend for another kiss.
Once again we were interrupted
“Seriously guys I’m going to loose my appetite!”
Finally breaking from Sam’s embrace I turned to face Dean.
Sam chuckled, “Yeah I’d like to see that happen.”
“ I don’t want to hear you complaining! I can’t help it when you let your brother leave the house looking like a slut in that flannel!” I say gesturing wildly at Sam and his flannel.

With a sudden burst of laughter from Sam he pulls me to him so my back is a against him. He kisses the top of my head while Dean just rolls his eyes and throws his hands in the air.
“Okay fine. What I came in here to say was that the turkey is done so we are ready to eat.”
“Sweet will you call in Cass and Abby” Nodding Dean walks back outside to collet the turkey and two very wily hunters.

“So how did Cass and Abby act today?” Sam asked tentatively.
“ About the same. Cass is confused and Abby is Abby. But I have a plan!”
But before I could relay the plan to Sam everyone started to file into the house. We all began to set things on the round dining table.
“Awesome guys it looks great! How about we all take a seat.” as I go to sit down I see Abby look at each seat and shift uneasily.
“ You labeled our seats?” they asked glaring at me.
Shrugging with a mischievous smile.
“ Yeah why?”
“What was your seating system?”
“Alphabetical of course. ACDMS.”
“ You.Are.Dead.To.Me.”
Smiling wickedly I ignored her threat and sat in my seat with Sam on one side and Dean on the other. Abby then sits down on the edge of their seat like they’re ready to spring up and flee at any moment. Cass sits next to them. Noticing their tension Cass speaks to Abby,” I do not understand why you only use half your seat. You are so small you could easily fit on the whole thing. You look tense I’m sure if you relaxed into the chair it would be more comfortable for you.”
Making eye contact with Sam over our drinks we both smirk at the angel and person they clearly care about.

With a quite but aggressive whisper Abby says “ Shut up Hot Wings” and punches him in the arm. Gently touching the arm Abby had punched Castiel continued looking down at Abby.
Trying to redirect attentions I start to passing around food listing off everything we had,” We have sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, mac and cheese, rolls, fruit salad, ham, fried turkey curtesy of Dean-“ cutting me off chuckling Sam took my hand to sooth my nervous energy “Babe everyone can see what we have.”

Smiling and squeezing his hand I say quietly while everyone digs in,” I know I’m just nervous I want this to be good first holiday for us.”
Leaning over to kiss my temple Sam whisper, “Its perfect.”
Looking up now I hear Cass ask, “ What is that?”

He was looking at what Abby had just placed on their plate. Cass still didn’t having anything on his plate. Which I guess was to be expected considering he was an angel.
Abby looked up, and said slowly, “ Its tofu. They made it for me instead of turkey.”
Dean then said around a mouth full of food, “ Yeah that odd ball over there doesn’t eat meat!”

“ Shut up Dean at least I didn’t almost killed by a there meat sandwich!” Abby pointed their fork at Dean. Grumbling Dean replied,” Its wack. Especially on Thanksgiving.”
Just then Cass says, “ Can I try some of this tofu?”
Stopping mid bicker Abby suspiciously looks at Castiel. They then cut off a piece of the tofu to place on his empty plate. Cass picks his fork up spearing the piece and bringing it to his mouth to take a bite. Everyone at he table waited patiently for his verdict. Chewing slowly and clearly contemplating the food he swallows.

“Well?” I ask curiously
“I think that particular piece came from three different soy bean plants somewhere in Iowa.” Everyone sat slack jawed at the angels analysis. That is everyone except Abby who gave out a strangled groan and put their head in their hands muttering a “oh my god this idiot.”

Sam Winchester always the social savior piped up then with the perfect Thanksgiving game.
“How about we go around the table and say a couple things we’re thankful for this year. I’ll go first: This year I am thankful for my girlfriend and the ability to have a proper holiday dinner.” With a sappy grin Sam raised his glass to me in a toast and took a drink. Gagging from both Abby and Dean sobered us both as we laugh good naturally.
Laughing I said “Fine if you don’t want it to get sappy how about one of you go next!”
Instead of one of them going they both decided to go together. Yelling over one another.
Dean says,” Turkey, Pie, and that couch I’m going to nap on.”
Abby trying their best to yell over Dean says,” Dat Ass!”
After they both look at each other and burst out laughing.
Abby then realizing what it sounded like starts to back pedal,” Wait no not your ass just a general ass. Like I’m generally thankful for them”
Dean laughing and talking full advantage of their mis step, “Noooope thats not how that works.” Enjoying the banter between the two we finally quite our laughing down enough to give Cass his turn.
“ What about you Castiel?” Sam asked kindly.
Furrowing his brow even more Cass takes a moment to mull the question over, “ I am thankful for the bees in your backyard.” he said smiling at me and then at Abby looking for reassurance that he had done it right. Looking as though they might pass out Abby gently reaches out to pat Castiel’s hand that rested on the table. Just two quick pats and a firm nod to indicate that he did good. Much like someone would do for an eager puppy that is trying to impress its person. Clearly beaming with the reassurance Cass continued to stare at Abby. Trying to give them a break I try and get Cass’s attention.
“ Speaking of my bee hive, how are they doing? I am new to bee keeping so I hope they are all happy.” Smiling Cass spoke eagerly “ Oh yes! They are all very pleased with their surrounding. They really enjoyed the Lantana flowers you planted over the summer. The orange and yellow ones were their favorite!”

Feeling an odd sense of pleasure knowing my bees were appreciating what I was doing for them I asked him if there was anything else they needed. Cass and I discussed bees until we had all finished with our slices of pies. Everyone except Dean that is. He had requested that I make him his own pie which I happily did because I was not about to share with Dean the pie monster.

Seeing that everyone was done eating and looking about ready for nap Sam started to get up to do dishes. Grabbing his hand as he stood, “ Honey jus leave them for now. I don’t know about you but I want to unbutton my pants and lay on the couch for a little while.” Looking like he was going to protest I gave him the best puppy eyes. Knowing that I learned from he best he quickly gave in.

All of use except Cass groggy from food drag our selfs to the living room. Dean sprawls on the love seat with the remote. Sam stretches out on the back half of longer couch opening his arms for me to lay beside him. Looking around Abby decides to seats on a pillow with their back to the couch facing the coffee table where I had ambitiously started a puzzle and hadn’t yet finished. That left Cass awkwardly shifting his weight from foot to foot at the end of the couch. Seeing this Abby gives an exasperated sigh leans up on their knees and tugs the angels coat sleeve.
“Come here Trenchie you’re going to help me with this puzzle. I seriously don’t know why you keep buying these. You never do them.” They say in my direction.
Sleepily I reply “I just think their neat.” Chuckling Abby continues collecting all of the edge puzzle pieces. Dean uses the remote to turn the tv on and scrolls through channels looking for something to doze too.
“ Oh Sweet! Its a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Sam and I would would watch every Charlie Brown special when we were kids.”
“ It was our one constant holiday tradition. No matter what we knew that our motels would get the channel that played Charlie Brown.”
Grunting Dean flipped it to said channel now” Good time.”

Settling further against Sam he starts to gently stroke my arms with his fingers making my fight against sleep a loosing battle. Whispering in my ear he says, “ This Thanksgiving really has been perfect. Thank you”
My eyes now feeling heavy I take the hand stroking the back of my hand and bring it to my lips to kiss. “ You’re welcome Sammy. I loved having everyone here.”

Gripping his hand and placing it over my heart, and my pendant he had carved me I finally gave up my battle and closed me eyes. Feeling Sam gently press his lips against my hair he whispered so low I almost missed it “I love you”
Holding his hand even tighter I whisper back “ I love you too”

This really had been one of the best Thanksgivings ever.
