Chapter Text
Caitlyn fell to her knees, when she saw the rocket crash into the council building causing a massive explosion and leaving a crater of destruction. Jayce, the other council members and probably hundreds of people within the impact radius would be hurt or even worse.
My mother!
When the enforcer remembered her mother told her about the meeting Jayce had summoned, she started to shake uncontrollably knowing her mother died a horrible death as far as she knew. Caitlyn couldn‘t breathe, she was sobbing too hard. But she fell completely still, when she realized Vi had wrapped her in a tight hug, stroking her back in circles. Even if she knew it wasn‘t enough comfort for her, she would do anything to make her feel better in that moment. The blue haired woman slowly lifted her head from the chest it was pressed against to look her partner in the eyes.
„I‘m so sorry.“
The young Kiramman quickly shook her head. She wasn’t believing, what she just heard. Not because she didn‘t think the pink haired woman could apologize to her, but because she shouldn‘t.
„No, you can‘t be held accountable for her actions.“
Tears, which were forming in Vi‘s eyes, started to roll down her face. She inhaled deeply, trying to control herself. She wanted to be strong for the woman sitting between her arms. She needed to.
„She is my sister. I‘m responsible for everything she does. I always have been.“
The young Zaunite got pulled out of her thoughts, when she felt Caitlyn brushing away the tears on her cheeks. As their eyes met, both reddened from crying, she got pulled into a hug by the enforcer.
„I would never blame you for something you haven‘t done. It wouldn‘t be fair to you.“
But Vi had a different opinion. She started to shake her head again, her body filled with guilt.
If I wouldn‘t have left her, when Vander died.
If I would have saved her from Silco.
If I wouldn‘t have abandoned her on the bridge.
Maybe I could have stopped her from firing this god damn weapon.
„Vi, stop. It‘s not your fault.“
The pink haired woman still wasn‘t convinced, but nodded anyway. She didn‘t want to upset Caitlyn more than she already was. After a few moments they stood up together, still leaning against each other. When the young Kiramman returned her gaze to the event of destruction, she couldn’t see one single building. Piltover was completely covered in a cloud of smoke. She lowered her head while she let out a heavy sigh.
„I need to get back.“
„I‘m coming with you.“
The enforcer rose her head in surprise of the statement. She opened her mouth slightly to argue with her partner, but she wouldn‘t let her.
„This is not up for discussion. I‘m coming with you, Cupcake.“
Vi offered her a genuine smile. She wouldn‘t leave her again. She would protect her at all cost to make sure she will be safe. From Jinx or anyone else.
„Thank you.“, Caitlyn responded as polite as she always was. She leaned against the Zaunite as they started walking towards Piltover.
It‘s the least I could do.
When they came closer to the center of the city, all around screams of pain and crying of loss became louder. People tried to help each other out of the rubble. Guilt started to spread inside the pink haired woman as she looked around at all the chaos and destruction, but she quickly focused back on her current mission to take care of her partner. They reached the city hall or at least what was left of it. The young Kiramman looked out for anyone she knew, but especially for her mother.
„Cait!“
She turned as fast as she heard her name and was glad when she finally recognized a familiar face.
„Jayce! Thank god, you‘re okay!“
The blue haired woman quickly threw her hands around his neck. While he embraced her in a tight hug, his gaze fell on Vi who was standing a few steps away from them to respect their privacy. His eyebrows knitted as he got a serious look on his face. He gave an officer a nod, which the enforcer quickly understood and went to get some help.
„My mother? Is she...?“
Caitlyn couldn‘t finish the question. She was too afraid of the answer. Jayce slightly leaned back so he could look in her face. When she saw the devastated expression on his face, tears started to appear in the corner of her eyes. She shook her head in disbelief, but he hold her tight.
„I‘m so sorry, Cait. Councilor Medarda and I are the only survivors.“
The young enforcer started to cry and sob heavily again. The pain felt unbearable to her, but she got distracted by a voice she knew to well by now, shouting aggressivly.
„Get your hands off me!“
When she looked up, she saw four enforcers holding down the pink haired woman and handcuffing her. She quickly let go of Jayce and ran over to her partner.
„Release her at once!“
The men in uniform stopped their movements and waited for instructions from the councilor. As Caitlyn turned back, she realized he was the one, who ordered them to arrest the woman she spent her whole time with these past few days. She gave him a shocked and questioning look at the same time.
„She is from the undercity and broke the blockade. She can call herself lucky not to be shot at sight.“
Her eyes widened at that statement. She was speechless. But recovered fast, when she heard a grunt of pain, because the Zaunite was fighting back.
„Let her go!“
„She is a dangerous criminal! She is one of the people, who are responsible for all of this! They killed your mother!“
Unbelieveable!
The young Kiramman shook her head and got a serious look on her face.
„She is one of the most selfless, most loyal and most caring people I’ve ever met! She saved me countless times and would never be the reason for something like that!“
„I‘m sorry, but I need to protect this city. Now more than ever.“
„Please, Jayce. If our friendship ever meant something to you, release her. She has a good heart and I trust her completely.“
The councilor had a sceptical expression, but gave the enforcers a nod. They uncuffed Vi immediately and took a few steps back out of fear she would fight them. But instead she just gave them an angry look. She relaxed a bit when her eyes met Caitlyn‘s, who was starting to walk towards her.
„Are you alright?“, she asked with a concerned tone in her voice.
„I‘m fine, I‘ve experienced worse than them.“
The Zaunite answered, trying to play it cool as always. The blue haired woman nodded and leaned against her. Not only because she was exhausted from everything that happened today, but also to show her affection. Vi laid an arm around her and suggested they should start walking to the Kiramman’s home, because she also felt the exhaustion taking over her body. While they were walking away from Jayce and several enforcers, Caitlyn wouldn‘t look at him. The pink haired woman on the other hand gave him a death glare. She wouldn‘t forget that...
