Chapter Text
Compress looked down at the resume. She didn’t seem to be threatening, and she had previous experience in the job that they needed done. She looked younger than he was, maybe in her mid to late twenties. Her features were sharp, but she had a pleasant demeanor. Her quirk didn’t seem like it would put any of his associates in danger. When he asked about it, she diverted and just mumbled something about it being heat based, but he figured that Dabi would be more than a match for her. Compress looked down at the paper again, searching for a name.
“What was your name again, Miss..?”
“Jolene Jaspers. But you can call me Jo. Most people just call me Jo anyway.” Compress made a note when he noticed her shoulders tensing at the question. The League would be looking into her background, no matter what she said.
“So, what exactly are you looking for in this job?” he asked. She looked down at the ground, then back up at him.
“If I’m being honest, I’m here for the money. This job is offering a good amount for the location to be cleaned.” She rambled a little about the economy having taken a downturn, and Compress felt a little pity for her, knowing it was true. “No one else at the job agency seemed to want this job, so I figured I would give it a try.” She smiled, somehow unconcerned that she was about to be working for villains. Did she even know, or did she not care? Compress scribbled down another note.
The interview continued for about half an hour, the two of them going back and forth. Compress learned she was going to a local college, spoke both Japanese and English fluently, and offered cooking services…for an extra charge, of course. She felt like a good fit, though Shigaraki would have to approve her. Compress hoped that he wouldn’t be the one saddled with researching the girl further. He may be a villain, but he didn’t like to spy on others.
“Alright. Well, Ms Jaspers. We will get back with you if it’s decided to continue with your application.” He stood up and extended his hand out to her. He noticed as she once again tensed up.
“Um… T-thank you, sir.. But I don’t like to touch other people or to be touched…” She also stood up and gave him a little bow, keeping her eyes down. Compress waved it off. Many of the others in the guild had little eccentricities like that. Maybe she did know who she was getting involved with. Not many of those in the League enjoyed being “touchy feely” anyway.
“Very well then. I’ll see you to the door .”
“Thank you,” she mumbled as she followed him to the front of the building. Her black hair reminded him of a curtain, hiding her face and eyes from him.
Once Jo had left his sight, Compress went back to collect her resume and the notes he had taken during the interview. He poked his head outside of the room and looked around. No one else was there for the interview. After waiting another twenty minutes for any stragglers, Compress pulled out his phone and sent a text. A minute later, one of Kurogiri’s portals opened and Compress stepped through. Compress gave him a nod before going on his way. The girl had been the only applicant to show up, oddly enough. The number of resumes had been limited anyway, but he had expected at least a couple more people to show up. Shigaraki was putting out a lot of money to get their space cleaned.
As Compress went to give the papers to his boss, he looked around the halls and rooms. They definitely needed the help. No one else seemed to want to pick up after themselves, and certain areas of the carpet were starting to get crusty from the various habits of some residents. There were numerous stains on the ground and walls, a few of which were starting to give off an odor. She would definitely have her work cut out for her, if she decided to stay.
He knocked on the door to Shigaraki’s office, entering when he heard his boss tell him to come in. The papers were set on the desk in the middle of the room. A pale hand reached out and snatched them as Compress sat in one of the chairs that faced the desk. He glanced at the hands across Shigaraki’s shoulders, brushing off the uneasy gut feeling that they gave him.
“Are you sure that there’s no one else?” Shigaraki looked over the resume and notes. The girl seemed almost too preppy to work in their building. The last thing that they needed was someone to draw attention to their location. Compress simply nodded. “Well fuck. I guess we have no choice then. No one else is going to get their asses in gear,” he rasped.
“I think that she actually is just looking for a job. She mentioned that she’s going to school nearby. I thi-” Compress was suddenly cut off by Shigaraki.
“Which school?” Shigaraki practically hissed. Compress put his hands up defensively.
“It's a college, Shigaraki. Jesus… She said she was studying biology. She looked young, but not that young. A little older than you, I'd guess.” Shigaraki simply nodded, scratching at his neck as he thought. A minute passed.
“Fine. Have someone look into her and if nothing turns up, call her and tell her the good news.” Shigaraki waved the other man off. “I think that we’ll be seeing her soon.”
