The day was young, the bright sunlight seeping through the curtains forced open Rarity’s dazed eyes. As the owner of a successful fashion boutique, waking up early was the norm for the pony, since she required a breakfast of delicious pancakes and her morning make up to fully prepare her for the day. As she tried to get off the bed she felt a weight on her flank, which she observed to be Sweetie Belle sleeping soundly aside her. This was unusual. Sure the siblings had shared the bed plenty of nights in the past, usually due to the younger sibling’s fear for nightmares, but it had been moons since they last did it and Rarity was pleasantly surprised.
“Sweetie Belle, what are you doing in my bed darling, was it your usual nightmares?” Rarity asked while nudging the filly awake with her snout. Sweetie Belle started mumbling in her sleep, which Rarity found absolutely adorable. Well it has been a while since I woke up next to her, might as well enjoy the moment. she thought while cuddling and watching her younger sister sleep. Much to her dismay, it did not take long for the filly to stir awake.
“Mmmm what time is it..?” Sweetie Belle muttered while taking in the quite different scene from her usual mornings with her groggy eyes. Sitting up on the bed, she finally locked eyes with her big sister. “Oh umm, good morning Rarity”, she uttered, while trying to remember how she got into and was waking up in her sister’s room.
“Good Morning Sweetie Belle, I’m guessing you got a good rest last night. Mind telling me about it?” Rarity smiled, and noticed the younger pony’s face get anxious.
“My room was too hot last night, so I couldn’t sleep.”
“Why would you want to sleep with me if it was too hot, wouldn’t sleeping with another pony make it hotter.” Rarity mused while raising a brow. By now she was sure that Sweetie Belle was hiding something, but she did not have any clue on what it may be.
“Well I-I was..” Sweetie Belle hesitated, and started looking around the room nervously which made the older pony worry. Very rarely had she seeing Sweetie Belle act this way, and the times she did were bad memories. Did something happen yesterday? She was kinda silent during dinner last night. Rarity wondered. Usually during dinner she would tell her big sister about her fun Cutie Mark Crusaders activities she had done with her friends. A family activity that Rarity always held dear to her since it allowed her to fully enjoy the raw happiness of the young filly, specially after the openings of the foreign branches of her Boutique in Canterlot and Manehattan, which had considerably shortened the young businesswoman’s leisure time that she could have spent with her sister.
“Oh Sweetie Belle, is something wrong? I’m sure you already know this but you can tell me anything, I’m your big sister and I promise that I’ll help you deal with whatever it is you need help dealing with.” Rarity said, gently hugging the smaller pony.
Sweetie Belle slightly calmed down, but was still noticeably nervous. She got out of the warm hug, much to Rarity’s dismay, and locked her eyes with her sister. “Well, nothing really happened. I guess.” Sweetie belle sighed. “It’s just embarrassing and I’m sure you’ll start laughing if I told you.” She continued while pouting, a sight so precious that Rarity tried hard to imprint in her brain.
“Darling, I promise I won’t laugh.” Rarity replied, patting the filly’s soft mane with her hooves.
There was still a hint of hesitation in Sweetie Belle’s eyes but Rarity was glad when she finally gave in. “Alright, if you say so, but please don’t tell anyone.” Rarity gave a firm nod, which prompted the younger filly to continue. “Apple Bloom started dating, and it had to be the one pony that we all hated, Diamond Tiara.”
She paused, which gave Rarity time to consume the piece of information. Apple Bloom, the very close friend and fellow Crusader of Sweetie Belle, was a pony Rarity was sure that Sweetie Belle had feelings for. And said pony has started to date somepony that Sweetie Belle hated, or atleast used to hate, and it was bothering her. As Sweetie Belle’s sister, Rarity was the one pony who understood her the most, and she had known about the younger pony’s small crush for her friend, specially cause it had resembled her own small crush for a certain Apple as well.
“I guess I was just feeling lonely after that, maybe I liked Apple Bloom more than I thought, and it’s too late.” Sweetie Belle continued, now with tears starting to cloud her large round eyes.
“Oh Sweetie Belle, I’m sure Apple Bloom will understand if you tell her how you feel. It may be late, I admit, but bottling up your emotions can hurt you. She may not share your feelings for her but she will definitely accept it darling, because that is what a true friend would do.” Rarity continued while using her hooves to wipe her sister’s tears. “But if you are not comfortable with that approach, as your big sister I’ll be more than happy to listen.”
“Thank you Rarity.” Sweetie Belle said softly, and quietly cried into her sister’s warm body. After a few moments later, Sweetie Belle stirred up from the sisterly embrace. “Well actually, that’s not all..” Sweetie Belle said, and Rarity noticed that the little filly’s cheeks had started to glow red, which the older pony found enchantingly cute.
“Go ahead Sweetie Belle, I’m listening.”
Sweetie Belle started while keeping her glance down towards the blanket she just got out from. “Last night I couldn’t help but think of Apple Bloom, which made it harder to sleep. So I tried to think of somepony else to take my mind off her. First I thought of Scootaloo, since she was my second closest friend but it didn’t help. I tried to think of each and every pony I was close with, but nopony was more important to me than Apple Bloom. Atleast that was the case till I realized there was one pony that was more important to me than anypony else.” Sweetie Belle paused and made eye contact with her big sister once more, which made Rarity nervous. As her big sister, Rarity knew what to expect from her little sister, atleast she thought she knew, but she had no clue what Sweetie Belle was trying to say at this moment. Actually, that was not entirely true, Rarity had somewhat of an idea of what was coming, but that thought scared her. I mean, it couldn’t be, right?
Sweetie Belle was now bright red and the sunlight from the windows further glowed her cheeks, it was a sight Rarity found so sweet and at the same time so captivating. Rarity could tell that the filly was preparing to tell something big, and she was right for the next words that came out from Sweetie Belle’s mouth shook the older pony’s core to the very edges.
“It was you.”
