Work Text:
Oikawa hasn't been feeling well lately, to be honest 'not feeling well' was an understatement. He felt like shit. His heart was soaring in the previous week him and Iwaizumi finally got together. However when Iwaizumi went on a trip for school people began to talk. Iwa had always been a fairly popular guy, he wasn't quite friends with everyone but they were all well acquainted. When news got out that notorious cool guy Iwaizumi was gay and dating Oikawa things got weird. Classmates Oikawa had never met would whisper in the halls and make unaccounted homophobic remarks. Oikawa was busy enough stressing about upcoming final exams without the rumors and homophobia spreading around about him and Iwaizumi.
Every time he walked into the library or a classroom he heard whispers about it 'psshh no way that guys with Iwaizumi' or 'I betcha Iwa's just messing with him.' Those thoughts dug their way into his skull. Every 'fag' whispered as he walked by was like a punch to the gut. It wasn't uncommon for Oikawa to lock himself in his dorm bathroom to cry.
Sometimes at the coffee shop he worked in he'd see students from his school, of course they'd only tease about how his job as a barista made him even more of a 'pansy'. He fought the urge to throw the piping hot coffee he'd just prepared directly at their face whenever they said those things to him.
Whenever Iwa heard these kinds of things he told them to 'go fuck themselves.' Oikawa wished for his confidence. Oikawa was always more of a 'fake it 'til you make it' kind of person but that way of thinking was being chipped away piece by piece as he neared college. He was constantly second guessing himself. Sometimes he wanted to quit, drop out and get a job at a gas station. Maybe let himself give up for once.
He knew his boyfriend would never let him, Iwaizumi would've never let Oikawa doubt himself, he would always be there to hug him and remind him how much he loved him when he was in a mood. But unfortunately Iwaizumi wasn't in town right now, he was on a trip for school. Oikawa had no idea where exactly. He would be gone for a month. It wasn't all bad though Iwaizumi always texted him when he was free, which wasn't often, occasionally they would do a face-call.
Today was no different than any other Wednesday. He went to class, studied for half an hour in the library, went to work a couple hours in the coffee shop and got home at 6 with just enough time to finish up some schoolwork and see if Iwa was free to chat. Oikawa didn't eat very often unless Iwaizumi was on a call with him. Iwa would remind him and so Oikawa would typically end up ordering food.
...
Oikawa was sitting in the library, books splayed across the table in front of him. There were only a few other students scattered across the room. He wasn't planning on doing any studying. In all honesty he just wanted to escape his normal routine, get away, even just for a second.
He was taking his pen apart and putting it back together when the library door swung open and closed with a thunk. Oikawa looked up in the direction of the noise and didn't believe what he saw. It was Iwaizumi strutting across the room. A few girls in the corner whispered something when he passed. Oikawa looked down, covering his head. He felt he no longer deserved the attention from Iwaizumi. Strong arms wrapped around his shoulders and he heard a familiar warm chuckle from behind him.
The feeling coated him like a layer of honey, security and comfort. His heart filled momentarily with the sweet, warm honey letting himself relish the small moment.
He was violently snapped out of his bliss by the feeling of eyes on him.
Those girls' whispers seemed to have doubled in volume as Oikawa peered over at the man behind him.
"Did you miss me?" Iwaizumi smiled.
Tears pooled in the corners of Oikawa's eyes as he felt the weight of others words lift off his shoulders, Nasty comments were drowned in the feeling of safety Iwaizumi never failed to radiate. Oikawa stood up and pulled his boyfriend and buried his face in a hug.
"Hey are you alright?" Iwaizumi said concern rising in his voice as he noticed Oikawa's tears. Iwaizumi pulled back to look at Oikawa in the face, streams of tears ran down Oikawa's cheeks as he put on a small smile. "Yes, yes I've missed you so much."
"C'mon follow me." Iwaizumi said as he gathered Oikawa's books off the table and led him to his dorm.
"What happened back there, are you sure you're alright?" Iwaizumi said, eyes bore lovingly into Oikawa's as he made his way across the room to him. Oikawa sniffled and wiped his face looking down, "Yeah, it's just" his voice cracking, "God Iwa people are so mean."
"What do you mean? What happened?" He said worried.
"People started to say some awful things, awful things about us," Oikawa sniffled avoiding Iwaizumi's eyes
Iwaizumi sat on the bed with him and wrapped an arm around Oikawa's waist. Iwaizumi turned Oikawa's chin up looking into his eyes. "Tell me baby, what did they say?"
Oikawa took a deep breath and leaned into Iwaizumi's side. "They said that you were too good to be with me and that it was disgusting, we were disgusting." Oikawa felt the arm around him tighten as Iwaizumi held him closer. Tears were pricking at his eyes once more. "A- and that you were only fucking with me and you were gonna leave,"
Iwaizumi looked at Oikawa with some of the saddest eyes, "Baby you didn't believe that, did you?"
Oikawa looked away, tears falling once more, "I know it's stupid but I just- it just got to me they wouldn't stop. I was so afraid that they might be right, that you'd come back and regret me" he paused for just a second pondering his next words, "see just how worthless I am." His voice cracked and he refused to meet the others' eyes. Iwaizumi pulled him into a hug and held him tighter than ever, slowly rocking back and forth.
"You make every single day worth living." At this Oikawa looked up into Iwaizumi's teary eyes. "You are the most beautiful, perfect human being in my life, goddammit I love you so much Tooru." Oikawa's heart warmed at his name, he hugged him back.
"I love you too Iwa, so so much."
