“Where are we going?” Mina, blindfolded, giggled as Tooru led her along by the hand.
“You can guess if you like!” Tooru squeezed Mina’s hand, “But we’ll be there soon!”
Mina had a good guess, not that she would’ve said anything and ruined Tooru’s fun. But the salty sea breeze filled her lungs, the evening sun was warm on her face (she could even see an orange glow through the blindfold and her closed eyelids) and she could hear the soothing sound of waves crashing against the shore.
After a few minutes Tooru asked her to take off her shoes. They stepped out onto hot, loose sand that felt wonderful between Mina’s toes, but - “Eep! Hot!” Mina squeaked.
“Come on!” Tooru pulled Mina faster and, both laughing, they ran towards the sound of waves. Soon Mina’s feet met harder packed sand, still damp from the tides.
They splashed into the shallows, and Tooru said, “Okay! Stop right there.”
“Can I take the blindfold off now?” Mina pumped her hands enthusiastically. She was just dying to know what the surprise was!
“Not yet… not yet… waaaaiiiiiiitttt…” As she waited, Mina relished in the surf washing against her calves and the feel of her feet sinking into the wet sand. “Okay! Now! But open your eyes slowly, okay? It’s bright!” And Tooru gently took off Mina’s blindfold.
Mina blinked, holding her hands in front of her eyes and slowly moving them away as she grew accustomed to the blinding light.
When she did, she was stunned. The most beautiful sunset she’d ever seen was unfolding before her eyes. “Wooowwww...” she breathed, “It’s… wow, Tooru, it’s incredible!”
Tooru clung onto Mina’s arm and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “Isn’t it? This place has the best sunsets in all of Japan! At least, that’s what I heard.”
“Looks like they were right. Oh, Tooru, thank you for bringing me here!” She turned, cupped Tooru’s cheek and kissed her.
“That’s not the whole surprise,” Tooru said when they breathlessly parted the kiss. “Wait there!”
Tooru splashed out into the waves. Mina could see the holes where the water swirled around her thighs and splashed up against her swimsuit, which… Mina blushed. This was a supposed to be a romantic moment, so she got her head out of the gutter.
“Ready? It’s a little intense…” Tooru asked.
“Ready!”
“Rainbow refraction!” Tooru called. Her body flared bright, dazzlingly bright, as every intense color of the sunset refracted into every color of the rainbow. It was like Mina was seeing a rainbow up close – like she was being enveloped by it! It surrounded her, warmed her, and lit her pink skin, and the splashing surf, up in all different hues. Even the droplets of water that sprayed up against her shins were glowing with color.
Mina laughed with joy as she looked all around her. Herself, the surf, the beach, even the buildings and trees on the shore were all enveloped in the rainbow. People on the beach were gathering around, laughing and exclaiming with unadulterated joy at the sight. Children ran forward, shrieking with delight and playing in the rainbow surf.
Mina returned her gaze to Tooru. If she shaded her eyes she could look right at her. She was the most beautiful sight Mina had ever seen, a rainbow in human form. Her arms were thrown wide, her hair streaming in the ocean breeze, her chest heaving with the effort of maintaining the refraction of so much bright light.
Tooru gathered her arms to herself and, with a roar of effort, spread her arms as wide as she could – and the refraction changed to only let through pinks, blues and whites – a whole sunset’s worth of intensity poured into three incredible colors.
“Tooru, you’re amazing!” Mina shouted, tears leaking down her cheeks from all the emotions she was feeling.
“I just want to show you,” Tooru shouted back, panting from exertion, “How much I love you!”
The refraction faded away, but not before Mina saw Tooru’s trans flag hands clap over her mouth. From behind them, kids moaned in disappointment that the colors had disappeared… but some other people started cheering and wolf whistling.
“You… love me?” Mina repeated back, her jaw slack and her arms falling limply to her sides.
“Y-yeah… I… I’m sorry, it’s probably too soon,” Tooru babbled as Mina splashed her way towards her through the surf, “and that was way too intense, and maybe you should just forget I said anything -”
Mina silenced Tooru with a kiss. A really long, really deep kiss, during which they folded each other up in their arms and squeezed tight as if they never wanted to let go. The wolf whistling behind them intensified, but neither of them could hear it.
“I love you, too,” Mina breathed when they finally separated. Then she turned towards the beach, thrust her fist into the air and shouted, at the top of her lungs, “You hear that? I love her TOO! She’s my GIRLFRIEND and I LOVE HER!”
The entire beach started cheering. “That’s GAY!” “You make a great couple!” “Mom, dad, I’m gay!” “We support you, honey!!” “Gay Rights!” “Yeah! GET IT!”
Mina and Tooru turned back to each other and kissed, as the sun set behind them.
