Respect(It Goes Both Ways)

Summary:

“You got Uraraka-san’s cup size written in there?” Kaminari-kun asked and Izuku felt rage bubble in his gut as he stared at Kaminari-kun, shutting his notebook loudly, watching as Mineta-kun tries to look over it.
“Kaminari-kun, stop. You two make them feel uncomfortable. You’re no hero.” Izuku says bluntly as both his classmates' lips frown in a thin line.
“What do you mean?” Kaminari-kun asked, hurt by Midoriya’s words.
“They’re heroes too! Not someone you oogle at because they’re pretty! They train just as hard as us and yet-yet you make those comments! You don’t respect them and they still respect you! Respect-respect goes both ways damnit!” Izuku shouted, glaring at the two boys who looked down in disappointment.
“Get to your own desks. I’m helping my fellow future heroes, unlike you two.”
OR
Izuku has always known women were treated unfairly in hero society and has always wanted to find a way to change it, but he never knew how deep it ran until the girls attacked him to help them with their costumes.
Midoriya Izuku learns that society isn’t ready for women to be treated quite the same, but he can’t bring himself to care when his friends are so desperately hurt by it.

Notes:

so tbh I think this will be like 8 or 9 chapters.

It's not all planned.

This was a one shot that got outta hand lol

Chapter 1: Midoriya Izuku

Chapter Text

It was a sunny day in the dorm rooms as Izuku studied in the common room alone in peace before Uraraka-san and Hagakure-san ran at him, attacking him with noise.

“Guys,” Yaoyorozu-san said with a kind smile, “you’ll scare him.” She whispered as she sat across from him.

“May we ask for your help?” She asked as Izuku blinked, pointing to himself.

“You score higher than me on our exams, you know that, right?” Izuku whispered as Yaoyorozu laughed at him and Izuku can see why the boys in school have their eyes on her.

Her laugh is quite nice.

“No no. Our costumes. We want winter costumes, but we have a hard time making them since support companies don’t listen to what we have to say!” She said with a cherry smile, but Izuku could see the pain in her eyes.

He knows what not being listened to feels like.

It hurts, Kacchan! Stop hurting me! ” A child's voice plays in his head as Izuku blocks it out.

“I will. Just let me know your measurements and what you want for it. I’ll design it.” Izuku said as Yaoyorozu-san smiled, squeezing his hand as she thanked him.

It hurt.

She shouldn’t thank him for this.

The companies should make the costumes they want.

“Feel free to give any input for my costume, Deku-kun!” Uraraka-san yelled as Izuku nodded.

He’d be sure to.

_______

“Th-they didn’t give you a costume and you asked for one?” Izuku asked as Hagakure-san nodded, as if it wasn’t a big deal.

“They said it would help-.”

“It doesn’t help you.” Izuku cut in as he remembered his mothers angry tirades over support companies sexualizing young female heroes.

He remembers the hurt in her eyes.

How she cried after every young girl left her office.

It fills him with rage that he missed the sign with Hagakure-san.

“What company was it?” Izuku asked bluntly and he watched as Hagakure-san’s clothes stiffened.

“Ah! Getting all fired up for me!?” Hagakure-san asked as Izuku nodded honestly.

“Yes. It’s not fair they didn’t respect your wants and wishes and went against it for something as silly as sex appeal. You’re more than your body.” Izuku said as he balled up his fists. “How long is your hair?” Izuku asked as Hagakure blinked.

“Waist length.” She said as Izuku nodded.

“Do you mind If I spray paint you with non-harmful chemicals?” Izuku asked as Hagakure blinked.

“...Eh?”

_______

Jiro watched as Izuku felt her pants material and tch’d angrily.

Then he handed her an extra pair of his pants and huffed angrily, going back to his journal as he looked at her.

“You should wear these until our costume forms can be turned in and you get your new one. Those pants rip too easy for the kind of hero you’re aiming for.” He said as he yanked on his lip and Jiro could see why Uraraka was so in love with the guy.

“Also, I’ll bring you one of my reinforced shirts. This material is just regular clothing. It won’t help against your quirk and would tear too easily in a heated battle.” Izuku said as Jiro chuckled.

“Bakugou said the same thing.” She said, but she swallowed the bitter feeling that Midoriya Izuku got better clothing then she did.

“Don’t worry.” Izuku said, a hand on her shoulder as he gave it a reassuring squeeze, “I’ll find a way to make it right.” He said as Jiro blinked.

How’d he even notice she was worried? Did she have a tell?

She’d need to fix that.

_______

Ashido sighed as Izuku told her that her design was fine, that the material was good, and it worked with her quirk.

She heard from Jiro that Izuku had completely tore the company a new one for giving Kaminari Denki a costume that would aid in his quirk, but not Jiros.

While it was nice of him, Ashido never wanted to see Izuku yell. Just hearing about it made her shiver in fear.

“Hey Midori, why do you get so mad over us not receiving the same treatment anyways?” Ashido asked, but secretly she was scared she’d get the same answer Sero gave her.

‘Because you’re a hero and should be treated as such’, he said and it was nice. A kind statement.

But she wanted more.

She wanted to be told it’s because she’s a human.

Not that it’s because of her occupation.

“Do you remember Takabana Shino? She was a hero student here some odd years ago. My mother had aided in her case against gender discrimination and how it led to some unsavory things.” Izuku said with a pinched face. “They loss under the grounds that the support company had no idea one of their workers was making young girls costumes so sexual against their wishes and it’s not the companies fault for how she was treated and how it damaged her mental health and detoriated it at a much faster rate then her male-counterparts.” Izuku said with a wavering voice.

“Three months later she killed herself due to public backlash. In her note she had thanked my mother for trying to help her. I won’t let her death go in vain. She was a person before she was a hero.” Izuku said as he closed his eyes.

“You got the company she was licensed under for costumes, so truthfully I was worried the most about you, Tsu-san, and Yaoyorozu-san.” Izuku said as he closed his eyes. “Luckily my mother had scared the owner so badly into firing almost everyone.” Izuku said with a dark smile and it scared Ashido a bit more than she would like to admit.

Who knew he had such a scary side to him? She thought, but the bubbly happiness she felt at knowing Izuku was helping them because they were people before they were young women and heroes made her happy.

_______

Tsu watched as Izuku nodded, testing out her costume as he stared at her.

“Heating packs would suit you.. no.” He said as he closed his eyes, trying to articulate his words. “There are these heating pad thingies that another hero student a year above us uses. He,” Tsu wants to yell about how unfair it is that Izuku knows this, but she doesn’t.

But it’s unfair to blame him for researching things she never did.

“It makes me mad.” Izuku said and Tsu feels bad for tuning him out and stewing in her own angst.

“Why?” She asked, as Izuku looked at her with sad eyes.

“They should give you these anyways! They gave it to him, it makes your costume less appealing to the male gaze and that’s it.” Izuku said, his nose shriveled in disgust.

“I was wrong to think they had changed.” Izuku whispered as he closed his notebook with a smile.

“Tsu-san, don’t worry. I’m going to help you the best I can.” Izuku said and Tsu felt slight fear at the anger in his eyes.

While it’s never been pointed at her, she knows that's the look he wears when he’s going to get shit done.

_______

Yaoyorozu watches as Izuku breathes in, slowly. Then just as slow he releases.

“Yaoyorozu-san, I am angry for you.” He says and she blinks.

She did not expect this.

“It’s fine! The things I wanted-.”

“UA is a million-billion yen institute! This-this piece of trash lied to you.” Izuku said, cutting her off as he balled his fists in anger.

“UA can pay a little extra to make you comfortable, you could’ve paid the little extra it costed! You want Nano-bot equipment? I’m getting it for you! You want to show a little skin? You should. But those decisions? They’re yours to make. Not some sick creep who sews together a fucking costume.” Izuku spat and Yaoyorozu felt heat rush to her cheeks at being defended so kindly.

Kaminari just laughed at her when she ranted to him during a study session with Jiro, joking with her that at least she looks hot in her suit.

“Your idea is good. It’s perfect even. I would like to ask though, how do you feel about shorter hair?” Izuku asked as Momo blinked.

“Nano-bots. They would work better for your base, but you need, you don’t need it, but I suggest it…” Izuku rambled as Yaoyorozu watched him in wonder.

“Tell me.” She says as Izuku leans over the coffee table in the common room.

“A body suit, full length. Woven with your hair, the material would be a bit thicker and would cover up your chest making you a bit more comfortable.” Izuku said as Yaoyorozu blinked.

She didn’t know how he knew.

“Takabana Shino. You’re a lot like her, so is Uraraka-san.” Izuku said bluntly. “It worried me, so I watched you two.” Izuku confessed his face a bit red. “Uraraka-san mentioned she wanted her suit a bit more baggy.” Izuku said with a flushed face and Yaoyorozu found it adorable. She always knew her classmate was awkward, but seeing him talk about a girl so freely.

It made her glad. She liked the growth he was displaying.

“You and Shinso-nee… you have the same family-designer. His son made your costume.” Izuku said as he looked at her, smiling away all of the rage simmering under his mask. “Anyways the idea. How do you feel about it?” He asked as Yaoyorozu blinked.

“I like it. I want this suit.” Yaoyorozu said as Izuku nodded.

“I’ll make it work then.” He promised before leaving to talk to Uraraka.

Yaoyorozu didn’t miss the way he referred to Takabana Shino as Shino-nee and she sure as hell didn’t miss the hurt in his eyes when he said they shared a similar link in designers.

Yaoyorozu wondered how she could aid in helping her friend.

_______

“My feet? Deku-kun, I trust you, but if this is some weird ki-.”

“No! You have them on your fingers so I thought you-your feet would have them!” He yelled as Uraraka blew up in laughter.

Izuku was always so funny to the girl.

Cute and funny.

A dangerous combo.

“I do.” She said, handing him her foot. “I just don’t use them often.” She said as Izuku nodded, touching her foot as he floated in the air.

“How do you drop me?” He asked as Uraraka placed her fingers together, watching as he dropped onto her bed.

“Awesome! How do you feel about me removing your shoes!? Your costume was well made just as well as Kacchans, thankfully!” Izuku said with a grin and hand over his heart.

“My shoes?” Uraraka asked as Izuku nodded.

“I could teach you my kick style! You’re a power house and it sucks you didn’t input this information.” Izuku said as Uraraka blinked.

“I did input it though.” Uraraka said as Izuku stared at her, his face dropping from happy to enraged.

“And they didn’t use it?” Izuku asked and Uraraka just nodded.

She watched as her usual happy-go friend turned sour.

“What assholes.” He said and Uraraka couldn’t help but let her gasps escape.

“If Iida-kun heard you… he’d be disappointed.” She said as Izuku looked at her, blinking owlishly.

“They are. They knew if you had a more badass costume you’d kick everyone to the curb.” Izuku said as Uraraka sputtered in laughter.

It was nice to know her friend was ready to get fired up for her and the girls, but she didn’t want her friend to fight a battle for them.

She would aid him, but first she wanted her winter suit!

Fighting isn’t awesome unless you have the right stuff.

_______

“Hatsume, I need you to made some suits.” Izuku said, handing her his notebook.

“What’s in it for me, Million?” She asked as Izuku sighed.

“Two months of testing on me and my accumulation quirk.” Izuku said and suddenly Hatsume was hot on his heels, arms around his neck as she grinned.

“We’re going to have fun!” She said and Izuku silently cried to himself and hoped the girls would be slightly thankful for his sacrifice.

_______

“Deku-kun… what is this?” Uraraka asked as Izuku cleared his throat.

“Replica’s of your costumes, but enhanced by…” Izuku looked at his hand and squinted. “Hatsume Mei’s amazing babies that you should all buy in the future when we go pro because….” Uraraka looked over towards Yaoyorozu who was snorting into her hand, the other girls following suit as Izuku stared at them, his face beat red.

“Please… just put them on.” Izuku said as Jiro snorted, Ashido joining in.

“Here? In front of-.” Before Ashido could finish Izuku was out the door of his room quicker than anything Uraraka had ever seen.

_______

“That was rude.” Yaoyorozu said as she changed into the costume, chastising the two girls who tch’d.

“I just wanted to tease him! I could’ve left to my own! He didn’t have to leave, he could’ve closed his eyes! I trust Midori!” Ashido claimed as Uraraka felt her own face heat up.

“Mina-chan!” Hagakure gasped as Jiro snorted.

“I would trust Midoriya, he was ready to take down a whole support company because my costume was shit compared to Kaminaris. He's a man written by a woman.” She claimed as Uraraka nodded.

“Deku-kun’s mother raised him all alone. His fathers overseas in America, but Deku-kun said it’s because he abandoned the family. Apparently he has a little sister in America who he’s never met before.” Uraraka spilled as the mood turned somber in an instant.

“Deku-kun isn’t sad about it though. He loves his mom and said his dads a bag of shit who’s only good at heating up a stove.” Uraraka said as she put on the body suit.

Yaoyorozu just nodded. “He also seemed close to that Shino girl who committed suicide…” “His mother aided in her case before she jumped.” Ashido filled in as the mood turned sour.

The rest of the changing was filled with a somber mood.

_______

“Why are you outside of your room?” Mineta asked as the girls opened the door.

“Midoriya-kun! What did you do to their costumes!?” He asked bitterly, shaking the boy who sat outside the room like a guard. “Why are they all a little less sexy!?” He yelled as Izuku glared at him.

“They’re heroes. Why do you care how they look?” Izuku barked out as Mineta’s hairs on his neck stood up in fear at the anger in the usually kind boys voice.

He turned to the girls and smiled.

“I donated my quirk and body to Hatsume-san for two months. Please say the costumes are at least okay.” Izuku begged helplessly as Uraraka laughed loudly.

“The costumes are great, Deku-kun!” She said, sending a kick up in the air. “It’s much more flexible than before.” She noted as Izuku nodded quickly.

“It’s the work out clothes I buy! They’re new! Not my old ones!” He yelled as Jiro snickered.

“I was teasing Midoriya. I’m keeping your clothes though incase I need them.” She said as Izuku nodded fastly.

“I don’t need them, I have more.” He added as Mineta blinked.

Just what the fuck went down when he turned his eye away from the green-haired boy for a week?

_______

“There are two months before our costumes come back to us.” Yaoyorozu said as she looked at Izuku.

“I was hoping that you could teach us some fighting, of course we-.” “I’ve always wanted to spar against you guys!” Izuku interrupted with a grin.

“Aizawa-sensei never pairs us together though. Plus we should use the gym! We could use our quirks and I can talk All Might into watching us! He would love to see it! He thinks you’re super cool, by the way!” Izuku muttered as Uraraka snorted into her hand.

“He-he’s a fanboy!” She yelled as Jiro snickered walking besides him as they headed down to the gym anyways to try out the costumes.

Yaoyorozu blinked as she watched Izuku lead the group of girls, talking about how excited he was to fight against them and how he’s always thought of the way their quirks work as awesome and cool.

Yaoyorozu can’t remember the last time a male has complimented her outside of her looks and smarts.

It felt nice.
