Work Text:
Midoriya slowly opened his eyes, groaning groaning as the bright light came through the window. He felt a heavy weight on his chest, but didn’t look down because of the pain on the back of his neck.
As his sight came into focus he realized All Might was sitting in front of him. The events of last night slowly surfaced in his memory as he looked at the troubled face of his mentor.
“You can’t keep putting your life into so much risk Izuku.” Was the first thing All Might said. His first name, usually All Might called him Young Midoriya, so Toshinori calling him Izuku meant that he was very serious and probably really worried. Izuku brushed it off, he had done what he needed to, he wasn’t going to regret his decision now.
“I know but I managed to save Kacchan right?’’ Midoriya rebutted.
“Your friend is a proficient hero and capable of handling himself, you didn’t need to save him.” Toshinori Yagi rebuked.
“But he was distracted! We had just gotten into a fight and..” Midoriya trailed off. He still didn’t understand why Kacchan avoiding him and behaving like he used to before they had started getting closer and becoming friends.
Midoriya had barely even seen Bakugou this week, which wasn’t an easy task considering the fact that now they were roommates, and even worked at the same hero agency. Katsuki had been coming home very late and leaving for work an hour earlier than required. Midoriya was very hurt, even if he had done something wrong he didn’t understand why Kacchan couldn’t just tell him.
Bakugou had also been glaring at him and whenever their paths did cross. Izuku didn’t know what to do.
Then on Friday night when they had finally been paired together on patrol. Midoriya had instantly grabbed Kacchan’s hand as soon as they reached their post.
“Why have you been avoiding me Kacchan?” He had yelled, with tears forming in his eyes. They had finally become friends after so much work on Midoriya’s part and even lived together. It hurt him that Bakugou was willing to throw away their friendship so easily. Especially since maybe Izuku felt… no he wouldn’t think of that right now.
“It has nothing to do with you Deku! Stop thinking so much of yourself and leave me alone!” Bakugou had yelled back, he even exploded his hand where Izuku was still holding him tight.
“Kacchan, why can’t you just talk to me! Don’t I mean anything to you?” Izuku had let go of Katsuki’s hand as he covered his face with it. He wiped away the tears that had slipped past his eyes.
Midoriya looked up angrily, he wanted to say so much to his childhood friend, but as always the words remained stuck in the back of his throat. Abruptly he saw something red blink behind a support beam of the abandoned building where some villains had been spotted recently.
Izuku realized too late that there just wasn’t one flashing light but many. He knew what it meant as he yelled, “Go!” and pushed Kacchan off the 5th floor and prepared to jump himself.
“Dek-” Katsuki was cut off as the whole floor he had just been pushed off of exploded. Deku had pushed him off and was caught in the blast himself. Bakugou used his explosions to propel himself upwards and slow the momentum of his fall.
Immediately he jumped into action and dove towards Deku who had been blasted off the building. Katsuki caught him and ran outside of the area where debris was still falling from the building. “You idiot.” Kacchan murmured as he buried his head into the hair of his unconscious friend. “How do you always manage to get into so much trouble?”
Bakugou yanked his head back quickly as he realized what he was doing. He quickly checked Deku over and gritted his teeth roughly when he saw the blood pooling out of the large wound on Izuku’s head. His arms had also been hit and were most likely broken.
Voices drifted over and Katsuki realized that backup had arrived and rushed over towards the other heroes.
He quickly gave a status report and told them that he would be taking Deku to be tended to.
He had then rushed Izuku to the doctor they had in their agency.
“But where is Kacchan anyway? He’s alright right?” Midoriya furrowed his brow and wondering if Kacchan was still avoiding him.
“Well…” All Might trailed off and averted his eyes behind Izuku. Izuku slowly turned around, careful of his aching body.
Midoriya gasped as he came face to face with Kacchan. He jerked his head to his own torso, he couldn’t bring himself to regret it despite the pain he felt, since he realized the weight on his stomach was Kacchan’s arm.
“Kacchan!” Izuku screeched as his face went red. This wasn’t good for his sanity, he had been doing his best to not let his crush on his childhood friend grow. Kacchan sleeping next to him on the small bed like he was his lover wouldn’t help at all.
Bakugou finally jerked awake, even though he had been soundly sleeping through Midoriya’s and Toshinori Yagi’s conversation. He sat up and planted his hands
“Deku! You fucking idiot! WHY do you always need to do your self sacrificing shit I swear I’m going to strangle y-”
All Might cleared his throat cutting Katsuki off, “I see that I’m currently not needed so I’ll leave for now, but I’ll be back later Midoriya.”
He quickly left the room, closing the door behind him.
Izuku looked at Bakugou, “I’m sorry Kacchan, I’ll be quicker next time.”
Katsuki groaned, bending down and hugging Deku tightly. “I hate you, you know.” Izuku winced slightly but he could deal with all the pain in the world just for one hug from Kacchan.
“Is that why you were ignoring me?” Those words slipped past Midoriya’s lips before he could stop them.
“I-” Bakugou pulled back and sat up again, “I’m not going to apologize. But I do have something to say.”
Midoriya waited patiently as for once Katsuki Bakugou looked nervous and was failing to find the words to say what he wanted.
“You owe for your stupidity yesterday you bastard, so you have to do something for me!” He finally blurted out. His years were red as he looked anywhere but at Deku.
“Of course Kacchan, what do you want me to do?” Izuku asked, patting his friend on his hand trying to comfort him.
Katsuki grabbed his hand and yelled with his entire face now red, “Go out on a date with me!”
Izuku was struck speechless at Kacchan’s request, with his face now similarly as red as Kacchan’s.
“I know what you’re thinking! I don’t like you or anythi-” Deku covered Kacchan’s mouth with his hands.
“Ok, I’ll go Kacchan’’ He said with a small smile.
“You can’t take it back! Let’s go now!” Bakugou immediately started pulling him up.
“Ow” Izuku winced, his arms really hurt. “Stop Kacchan, we’ll go when I’m discharged alright?’’ He bit his cheek not believing that any of this was real. With his luck he was probably in a coma and just dreaming up this whole situation.
Katsuki quickly let go of his hand, “Sorry! Are you alright? I didn’t mean to hurt you.” He worriedly hopped out of the bed and pulled up the blanket which was bunched up at the bottom of the bed, and used it to cover Deku. He worriedly reached out his hand to hold Deku’s hand but absurdly stopped and instead started going to get the glass of water near the windowsill for Deku.
Izuku quickly reached out and pulled Kacchan’s hand into his own. “It’s alright Kacchan but maybe you should kiss my hand to make it better?” Midoriya’s eyes widened as he realized what he had just said, “I- I mea-” he sputtered.
“Your dumb pickup lines won’t work on me Deku! And don’t tell me what to do either!” Bakugou huffed. But he nonetheless walked closer and gently pulled up Deku’s hand and planted a small kiss.
They both blushed and turned their heads away, embarrassed by the small action. However they didn’t let go of each other's hands.
“Wait, if you like me, why were you avoiding me Kacchan?” Midoriya asked in a quiet voice. Kacchan slowly sat down on the bed again and placed their hands on his lap.
“I don’t like you!” Katsuki said. “But well, I didn’t mean to hurt you, I just felt really weird around you and then shitty hair hair told me that it was because I had a crush on you. And then… shut up whatever.” Katsuki looked away, he felt awkward trying to explain himself. But he knew that he had really hurt Deku. So he continued.
“Well I didn’t know how to behave around you anymore, so I decided to avoid you and try to get over my feelings.” He concluded, it wasn’t the best explanation but he tried his best.
A small smile came over Izuku’s face, he knew Kacchan was doing his best. His friend had really changed, and he was still trying his best to become a better person. Midoriya could never imagine a 16 year old Kacchan admitting any of his feelings, he had come very far since then.
Rubbing small circles on Kacchan’s hand with his thumb, he replied, “I understand Kacchan, but next time please tell me what’s wrong, I wouldn’t have minded even if I didn’t like you too.”
“I really care about you Kacchan” He added.
“I don’t like you, but alright Deku” Bakugou replied with a small smile in return.
Izuku let out a small laugh, “Alright Kacchan. You should go ask the someone about when I can be discharged though.”
“Yes! And don’t forget, you already agreed to it Deku so you can’t back out now! We’re going on a date!” Bakugou got up to go and find someone to check up on Deku. But before he left he leaned down and softly said, “Get better soon Deku, ok? And stop getting hurt so much.”
He then swiftly planted a kiss on Deku’s cheek and left with his face burning red and a large smile. Izuku was in the same condition behind him.
