“I can’t believe you fell off the ladder hanging up Christmas lights on Christmas Eve.” Isabelle scolded her brother as she began filling out the hospital paperwork.
“This is not my fault, Jace was supposed to hang the lights but instead he decided to go follow that Fray girl around.” Alec hissed.
Isabelle rolled her eyes.
“Excuses, Excuses big brother.” Isabelle jokes.
Alec rolled his eyes and hissed in pain as he received a sharp pain in his shoulder.
“Alec Lightwood.” a nurse called.
Grabbing his jacket with his good arm Alec started to follow the nurse to a hospital room.
“Hello Mr.Lightwood, my name is Catrina and I’ll be taking care of you tonight.” Cat introduces kindly.
Alec smiles,
“You can just call me Alec.”
Cat nodded.
“And you can just call me Cat.”
“Alright, it says here you took a fall off your ladder hanging Christmas lights is that true sir.?”
Alec nodded his head in shame.
“It’s nothing to be embarrassed about Alec do you know how many people come into the E.R this time of the year due to something Christmas related? A lot of people.” Cat tried to comfort.
“All right first I’m just going to need you to give me some of your medical history, then I’ll take your vitals, and then some minor tests to make sure you also didn’t receive a concussion. Then send you up to X-ray and C.T. that okay?” Cat inquired as she got her supplies ready.
“Sounds good.” Alec agrees.
Cat was super nice, Alec noted as she was gentle as she took his vitals and asked him random questions about himself, nothing too personal just simple basic ones.
“So how did you slip off the ladder anyway?” Cat questioned as she wheeled him up to X-ray.
Alec rolled his eyes,
“First of all it was supposed to be my roommate’s job but instead he rather go chase my sister’s annoying redheaded friend. Second of all, my sister scared me by calling my name as I reached out to fix a light and I lost my footing and fell.”
Cat just patted his arm in sympathy.
After the X-ray and C.T and wheeling him back into the room Cat allowed Isabelle into the room so she could also hear the diagnosis.
“Okay good news first, you have no concussion or any signs of head trauma.” Cat declared happily.
“That’s such a relief, you're still an idiot though Big bro.” Isabelle whispered.
Alec rolled his eyes.
“Bad news is that you fractured the humerus bone in your shoulder, so we are going to have to admit you tonight and you're going to have surgery tonight.” Cat admitted gently.
Isabelle gasped in shock.
“But the surgery is nothing major and it’s quite simple really and it should only take a couple of hours and you will be under anesthesia the entire time.” Cat quickly added trying to ease the situation.
“So I’m going to spend Christmas in the hospital.” Alec muttered.
“To be fair, mostly just tonight and tomorrow for observation. But hopefully you’ll get discharged sometime tomorrow. But yes you will have to spend Christmas here.” Cat revealed.
“It’s fine Alec, I’ll stay here tonight and then tomorrow morning I’ll bring Jace and Mom can bring Max and we will still spend Christmas as family.” Isabelle declared.
“No way! You can’t spend Christmas here at the hospital, you should be at home and doing our family traditions.” Alec argues.
Isabelle rolls her eyes at her brother’s dramatics,
“Please, It’s not Christmas without you hermano. Besides, you make it seem like we can’t just watch Christmas movies and open presents while drinking hot cocoa here at the hospital.” Isabelle proposes.
Alec opened his mouth to fight tooth and nail when the hospital room door opened and in came the hottest man Alec has ever seen. He was tall and had the most beautiful tan skin, he had jet black hair with some festive tinsel. He was wearing Royal Blue scrubs and a white lab coat and some black trainers.
“Hey Cat, I was wondering if you had time to go to starbucks and get some hot cocoa real quick.” The man asked, smiling.
Cat pouted,
“Normally you know I would want to but I'm here trying to convince my patient here to stay so he can have surgery on his fractured humerus bone.”
The man frowned before turning towards Alec and Isabelle.
“Ouch. That's gotta hurt, but selfishly to me sounds like an amazing surgery. I mean can you imagine how beautiful the scar would be?” The man admits.
“But then again I’m only an intern so I would kill to be part of that surgery. Anyways sorry for the injury hope you get better soon.” The man apologises before waving goodbye and leaves the room.
Alec is too thunderstruck by the man to notice the way Cat and Isabelle were giving him knowing looks and silently plotting.
“That’s Magnus, he’s my best friend and is interning here for a while. He’s helping out in the E.R for the moment because normally this time of year we need all hands on deck. But he’s normally in the pediatric ward.” Cat points out nonchalantly.
Alec whips his head towards Cat,
“He works here. As in this specific hospital.” Alec demanded.
Cat nodded her head.
“Yep, and just recently his horrible girlfriend just broke up with him a few weeks ago. So he offered to cover the night shifts for a while so he won’t have to be alone on Christmas.” Cat reveals.
“So what you’re saying is Doctor McDreamy is going to be here tonight and tomorrow.” Isabelle clarifies with a smirk.
Cat smirks,
“That’s right.”
And If the promise of seeing Dr.Magnus again was the reason he decided to have the surgery then the only people who had the know where Alec, his nosy little sister, and the nurse who introduced them together.
“The surgery went great, there were no complications, but he’s probably going to be under anesthesia a little bit longer.” Cat whispered towards Isabelle as they watched Alec snore in his hospital bed.
“So how are we going to get these two together?” Isabelle conspired towards the E.R nurse.
Cat shrugged,
“I have no Idea.”
Alec groaned as he opened his eyes and scanned his hospital room. Isabelle must’ve gone home Alec noticed, the room was pretty much dark minus the hospital monitors that were on. Alec looked around to see the room was only a single, I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing Alec thought.
Alec pressed the nurses button on the remote in front of him, hoping someone could grab him a cup of ice water and maybe some sort of small snack. While he waited Alec closed his eyes again.
“Everything okay?” a soft velvety voice questioned.
Alec’s eyes shot wide open as he looked over and there stood in all his glory Doctor McDreamy, crap he meant Magnus.
“Sir?” Magnus asked again.
Crap he’s probably just been staring creepily for too long, Alec wanted to bang his head on the small hospital tray in front of him due to his embarrassment.
“I was hoping to get some water and maybe something to snack on?” Alec stuttered.
Magnus smiled,
“Sure, anything in particular you wanna munch on.”
Alec took a moment to contemplate,
“How about a Hershey’s Chocolate Bar? Or you know how about a Chocolate Chip Cookie.” Alec announces.
Magnus laughs and leaves the room. Alec has never heard a sound he enjoyed more than this man’s laugh.
A few moments later Magnus reappeared with a plastic cup and a pitcher. After he sets the cup and pitcher on Alec’s table he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a cookie in a plastic bag.
Alec smiles,
“Thanks.”
Magnus just brushed it off,
“It’s no big deal honestly. I was getting kind of bored just hanging around the Nurse’s station.” Magnus admits.
Alec tried putting a lot of thought into what he was about to say next, he didn’t want to make this man uncomfortable.
“Well since you aren’t too busy maybe you could stay here with me and maybe watch some Christmas movies here with me.” Alec asked with a mild blush on his cheeks.
Magnus then looks hesitant,
“As much as I would like to, I don’t know how happy my resident would be to know I’m slacking off.”
Alec’s heart fell in disappointment .
“But he’s probably in surgery or doing boring resident stuff so he won’t really notice that I’m missing so I’m In.” Magnus declares.
Alec’s heart picked up in excitement.
Alec has never had more fun with another person before, with Isabelle she’s always dragging him to places where he doesn’t feel comfortable, Jace has been too busy chasing Clary Fray around so they haven’t spent that much time together lately. But with Magnus, Alec feels like he can be his true self.
They spend the night watching the random Christmas movies on the small T.V. Magnus even snuck in some popcorn though he refused to tell Alec where he got it from. They even talked about some personal things.
They also talked about their hobbies and their interests. Alec felt it in his bones that in some way this could be a date, with the way Magnus laughs at his horrible jokes or the way Magnus’s eyes sparkle when they make eye contact, but it’s probably way too soon for him to start dating someone else Alec internally huffed.
At some point they both fell asleep together during It’s A Wonderful Life. Alec has never slept better in his life.
When Alec awoke the next morning he was expecting to see Magnus still there next to him but unfortunately he wasn’t but there was a note on the chair he was sitting in. Just as Alec grabs the note to read the door to his hospital room is slammed open quickly Alec hides the note under his blankets.
“HO HO HO Merry Christmas.”Isabelle cheers into the room.
Alec rolls his eyes at his sister.
“You know people are probably sleeping, is this really necessary?” Alec snaps with no heat in his words.
Isabelle just beamed
“I’m going to let you get away with that because you are in the hospital, big brother.”
“Alec, Merry Christmas.” Max, the youngest Lightwood, greeted excitedly as he entered the room with their mother Maryse.
“Merry Christmas Darling.” Maryse greeted then kissed his forehead.
“Yo! Happy Holidays Bro.” Jace cheered as he walked hand in hand with Clary.
Alec just rolled his eyes.
“How are you feeling Alec?” Clary asks politely.
Alec almost didn’t wanna say anything, he honestly wanted to grunt but thought since it was the holidays.
“I’m fine, I should get discharged sometime today I think.” Alec answered monotone.
It might be Christmas but he didn’t want Clary to be comfortable with him.
The family sipped on their individual hospital's somewhat decent hot cocoa and talked.
“Alright let’s open our presents now” Max exclaimed.
The family laughed.
“All right, All right let’s open presents. Isabelle, will you hand them out dear.” Maryse politely instructed.
As Isbelle started to hand out the presents, everybody turned their heads towards the doorway where they heard knocking, there by the door stood Cat and Magnus who each had a basket in their arms.
“Merry Christmas.” The duo cheered.
“We just stopped by to see if anyone wanted any Candy Canes?” Magnus asked.
“I do.” Max hollered as he jumped up and ran towards Magnus and Cat.
“You're lucky it’s Christmas young man.” Maryse gently scolded her son.
Max just ignored his mother as Magnus handed him a Candy Cane.
“Thanks.” Max chirped as he opened and started eating his treat.
Magnus and Cat then proceeded to hand everyone else in the room a candy cane.
Magnus and Alec made eye contact and shared a soft smile with one another.
“Well we hope you enjoy the rest of your day.” Magnus salutes and with that him and Cat leave.
“He’s a good looking young man.” Maryse notes towards Alec.
“And he enjoys working on the pediatric ward.” Isabelle adds.
“Hmmm good looking, a doctor and good with children that’s quite a combination.” Maryse recaps aloud.
Alec rolls his eyes.
“Can we focus on our family now and my non-existent love life later.” Alec deadpans.
It was nice spending time with his family Alec notices as he watches Isabelle getting excited over her new makeup palette, Max rambling to Clary about anime, Maryse humming along to the Christmas song on the T.V, and Jace was snoring in a chair.
With no one really paying attention to him Alec slips the note out from under his blanket unfolds it and reads what’s inside,
Thanks for keeping me company. Maybe we could do this again, but hopefully when we aren’t in the hospital. - Magnus.
When I see him again I’m going to ask him out. Alec determines.
At about two o'clock Cat comes back to the room and cheerfully tells the family that Alec can officially be discharged soon they just have to fill out some paperwork. Maryse followed Cat to fill out the paperwork, Jace & Clary were going to start the car. Max and Isabelle were going to take care of the trash.
Once Alec was alone he tried thinking of ways to ask Magnus out.
“Hey, I heard you were getting discharged tonight.” Magnus’s velvety voice spoke.
Alec smiled,
“Yeah. I am.”
There was an awkward silence.
“Well I hope you get better soon Alec.” Magnus says bashfully.
Just as Magnus was about to leave the room,
“Do you wanna have dinner with me sometime?” Alec blurts out, shocking himself and Magnus.
Magnus froze, then turned around a soft smile on his face.
“Yeah I would really like that.”
So if Alec smiles like an idiot the entire car ride home from the hospital freaking everyone out it’s because he got the best Christmas gift ever.
Who else can say they are going on a date with a hot doctor for Christmas.
