Work Text:
“How do you feel about Christmas?” Dean asks. “The bible says the earth is only thousands of years old but you’ve talked about like, dinosaurs and shit over a millennium ago. So, what’s the skinny? Was Jesus actually born on December 25th?”
Castiel doesn’t look up from the book he’s flipping through. They’re both in the library, beers in front of them, full from a home made dinner of burgers and fries. “No.”
Dean lights up. “I knew it. So when was the guy born?”
“Autumn.”
Dean sits back in his seat, stroking his chin. “Huh. Yeah.”
Castiel finally glances up, arching a brow.
Dean gets defensive. “What?”
“I… was unaware you took interest in the topic,” Castiel says slowly.
Dean shrugs and scratches his cheek idly, avoiding Castiel’s gaze. “Well- yeah. Y’know, read the bible front to back quite a few times. Gotta make sure you understand the shit you’re usin’, right? Bible is basically a weapon for us. Also a research book. I dunno if it would count as lore…”
“Dean.”
When Dean glances up, he sees Castiel’s cheeks flushed slightly, his eyes bright, breathing elevated. “Uh- you ok?”
“What is your favorite passage?” Castiel asks, his voice deeper, rougher.
Taking a moment to wrack his brain, Dean finally replies, “‘There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time for hate, a time for war and a time for peace.’” He scrubs his chin. “Uh, Ecclesiastes. 3:1-8.”
Castiel stands up, a fine tremor running through his body. “Take me to bed.”
Dean blinks, surprised, and then a wolfish smile tugs his lips. “Me recitin’ bible verses does it for ya, Cas?”
“Now,” Castiel growls.
Dean decides then and there that he needs to memorize as many verses as possible.
