“Dude I’m freaking out right now,” Sam said to Hunter as he paced back and forth in his bedroom.
“You’re both so dramatic,” Hunter sighed, rolling his eyes and pressing his finger into his temple. “What’s the big deal?”
Obviously, Hunter was not the best person to be talking about this to but he was Sam’s only option. Hunter was Kurt’s cousin and they were like best friends so Hunter would know everything about him including what he would want for Christmas.
Sam loved Christmas, who didn’t? Everyone was always so happy and festive this time of year. But when it came to giving gifts, well he wasn’t Santa Claus. Although Santa Claus got a list of things that people wanted so technically his job of figuring out what people wanted was easy. But still, he never knew what to get his family and friends for Christmas and even though he meant well, he always seemed to give everyone the worst gifts. And now that he was dating Kurt he wanted to make sure that he didn’t mess up this time by getting him the best present he had ever given to someone.
Kurt was so particular though. He was pretty sure that Kurt wouldn’t get upset if he got him a bad present because he wasn’t like that but what if his opinion of him lowered if he got him a crappy gift? It was stupid to break up with someone over a Christmas present but still, it could cause resentment which leads to fighting which leads to breakups so he had to be conscious. If only someone could be more of a help.
“What do you mean what's the big deal ?” Sam asked him, frowning. “It’s only Christmas, the best time of the year and I don’t know what to get my boyfriend who’s your cousin. What are you getting Sebastian?”
“Nothing,” Hunter shrugged. “ We don’t do gifts and I’m glad we don’t, seeing how much of a mess you are,”
“Nothing?” Sam asked.
“That is what I said Sam,” Hunter told him. “We’ll hang out together and probably spend a shit ton of money but we don’t do the whole secretly asking what we want for Christmas thing because it’s stressful and it’s not really that fun. That’s for little kids Sam, grow up some,”
“But Kurt’s expecting a present,” Sam told him, continuing to pace.
“Just give him a kiss under mistletoe or something,” Hunter said, taking a ball from the floor and throwing it up in the air. “He’s romantic like that,”
“I can go and give him a kiss right now,” Sam said. “That’s not good enough,”
“Well you’re acting like you don’t even know your own boyfriend Sam,” Hunter said. “When you think of him, what do you think of?”
“Angels,” Sam said lightly, smiling at the thought of Kurt.
“Gross,” Hunter muttered. “Then get him a dumb angel or something,”
“He’s not a child,” Sam said.
“This is ridiculous,” Hunter said, throwing the ball he had been throwing in the air at Sam. “Why do I even care so much?”
“Because you love Kurt too,” Sam said, catching the ball and throwing it back at Hunter.
“Goddamn it, you’re right,” Hunter said distastefully, sitting back in his chair.
“Right,” Sam nodded, happy that Hunter was on board. “Now what else do I think of when I think of Kurt?”
“How am I supposed to know what you think?” Hunter asked him. “God if you really care this much then just get him a teddy bear or something? You can fuckin personalize them and everything. I mean it’s weird but it’s also something that Kurt would like because it came from your ugh… heart,”
“You really think he’d want a teddy bear?” Sam asked him, thinking the gift over. It did seem like a good idea even if it was a little childish. But who cared, teddy bears were for everyone.
“I can’t think of anything else and your brain obviously isn’t working,” Hunter told him, pushing himself up out of his chair. “And I’d rather do anything else than sit in this room for another second,”
“Does that mean you’ll go shopping with me?” Sam asked him, going over to his bed to grab his coat and his wallet.
“He’s your boyfriend, Sam,” Hunter told him. “You’d think you’d know what he liked,”
“I didn’t hear a no,” Sam smiled, patting Hunter on his back. “Let’s go,”
“You didn’t hear a yes either,” Hunter called after Sam but he had already left his room. He glared after him but just his head and followed after him. He guessed Kurt was worth it anyway.
“I can’t believe I’m in a Build-A-Bear right now,” Sebastian muttered. “I haven’t been in this store since I was 4,”
“But all the bears are so cute,” Kurt told him, smiling at the collection of bears in the glass window. “Although some of them are kind of over the top. Besides you’re the one who told me to get Sam a teddy bear,”
“You couldn’t think of anything,” Sebastian told him. “Besides I wasn’t being serious, what 17 year old wants a teddy bear?”
It was true. He couldn’t think of anything to get Sam and he always gave the best gifts to his family and friends. He couldn’t tell if he didn’t know what to get him because he was just so determined to get him the perfect gift and nothing seemed good enough for him or if it was because he was a bad boyfriend and didn’t even know what Sam liked. Whatever it was, nothing seemed right to get him and when he had asked Sebastian he had given him the idea to get Sam a teddy bear because he had told him that Sam was cuddly and sweet, like a stuffed animal. And that’s why they were in the store at the moment surrounded by a bunch of screaming toddlers and stressed mothers running after their children, looking for the perfect bear.
“I don’t know, it seemed like a good idea when I thought about it,” Kurt shrugged, looking at all the bear skins to see which one was the best. “If you were getting Hunter a bear, which one would you get him?”
“I wouldn’t be getting him a bear in the first place,” Sebastian told him. “Remember, we don’t do gift-giving,”
“That wasn’t helpful Sebastian,” Kurt told him, picking up two options. “Now brown or white?”
“They look so creepy,” Sebastian said, taking the brown bear skin out of his hand. “Why’s it so saggy? The bear has wrinkles and it hasn’t even been born yet,”
“The bear has to be stuffed,” Kurt told him. “You pick what bear you want and then you stuff it and dress it up,”
“Gross,” Sebastian muttered.
“Where’s your sense of romance and spirit, Seb?” Kurt asked him, snatching the bear skin out of his hand. “It’s fun,”
“It’s weird,” Sebastian frowned. “And childish,”
“It was your idea,” Kurt reminded him.
“I wasn’t serious,” Sebastian told him again.
“I think I like the white one,” Kurt told him, ignoring his previous statement. “It’s classy,”
“Leave it to you to make everything flamboyant and gay,” Sebastian rolled his eyes. “Bears aren’t supposed to be classy, they’re supposed to be cute and flawed,”
“I’m getting the white one,” Kurt told him. “Well, you put the fur in it?”
“No,” Sebastian told him. “It’s your bear, you stuff it,”
“But I have to pick out the clothes,” Kurt explained to him. “And we both know that you have no sense of style whatsoever so you can’t do it,”
“I hate you,” Sebastian told him, trying to hide the smile that was forming on his face. “My clothes aren’t that bad,”
“They aren’t that bad because of me,” Kurt told him, handing him the bear. “Now you get it stuffed while I pick out clothes and then we can leave,”
“You owe me a pretzel,” Sebastian told him, taking the bear out of his hand.
“You sound like a child,” Kurt called after him as he started to walk away.
“Make it two pretzels,” Sebastian said back.
Kurt laughed quietly to himself as he watched Sebastian walk away before he walked over to the area of the store where they had all the clothes for the bears. It really did seem childish that he was in the store especially when he saw the Disney and Baby’s First costumes. There had to be something in there that was mature enough for a teenager, especially since they had bride and groom costumes. Maybe Sam would like that.
“Kurt?” He heard Sebastian ask before he appeared in front of him with a plastic heart in his hand.
“What’s that?” Kurt asked him, referring to the heart.
“You have to say something into the heart,” Sebastian told him. “Which is just even cheesier but it’s on sale so…”
“Aww I love that,” Kurt said, taking the heart out of his hand. “What should I say?”
“How am I supposed to know?” Sebastian asked him. “Whatever it is it’ll be gay and cheesy, just like you,”
“Must I remind you that you’re gay too?” Kurt asked him.
“I don’t flaunt it around Princess,” Sebastian smirked. “Now hurry up, I want a pretzel,”
“Okay, okay, you’ll get your pretzel,” Kurt said, rolling his eyes. “Just be quiet for a minute while I tell the heart I love him,”
“That sounds really weird,” Sebastian muttered but then Kurt glared at him and he motioned with his hands that his lips were zipped. Kurt pressed down on the button on the heart and spoke into it.
“I love you Sam,” He said, smiling before he took his finger off the button. “There, I did it,”
“Wonderful,” Sebastian smiled. “Now hurry up and pick something out so we can pay and go . If anyone else I know sees me here my reputation will be ruined,”
“You sound like Rachel,” Kurt told him.
“That’s who I was going for,” Sebastian said. “But it’s true,”
“Okay,” Kurt said, turning back to the selection of clothes and sighing. Maybe he was just being too picky, if he were picking out an outfit for himself then he wouldn’t even be in that store but this was for Sam. He was more casual with his clothing. Why did this even matter so much? If Sam didn’t like the outfit then he could just take it off. And if he didn’t like the bear… then he was screwed.
He looked at a box of assorted accessories and something caught his eyes. It was actually perfect, something that represented Sam perfectly. That was pretty easy then. He picked up the accessory and smiled. Perfect.
“I don’t understand why you’re wearing those glasses Hunter,” Sam told him as they walked through the mall.
“Because if anyone sees me here then I’m screwed,” Hunter told him, hiding his face in his jacket. “I can’t be seen in a Build A Bear,”
“But why are you going?” Sam asked him, reminding him that it was for a good cause.
“Because I love my cousin,” Hunter sighed. “Even though my reputation is on the line and he’s kind of a pain in the ass,”
“Well let’s just go and get a bear and then my problem is solved,” Sam smiled. “Then I’ll just have to find a place to hide the bear until Christmas,”
“You could just wrap the bear,” Hunter told him. “Like a normal person,”
“Shut up,” Sam said. “I already told you, wrapping paper is confusing,”
“Idiot,” Hunter muttered but then Sam shushed him and grabbed his arm. “What? What is it? Why are you touching me?”
“Look,” Sam whispered and pointed his finger to the other side of the mall to where he saw Kurt and Sebastian walking together. “He’s here,”
“Oh, would you look at that?” Hunter said. “You’re boyfriend and my boyfriend are both here with a… a Build A Bear bag? Why is Sebastian holding a Build A Bear bg? What a nerd,”
“Hunter shut up,” Sam told him. “What if they see us?”
“I think they already have,” Hunter shrugged, pointing out to Sam that Kurt and Sebastian were already on their way over to them. “Tough luck,”
“If they ask, we're here getting… light bulbs,” Sam said quickly.
“Why do we need lightbulbs? Hunter asked him.
“Because we do,” Sam explained as Kurt and Sebastian neared them.
“Look who’s here,” Sebastian said happily to Kurt who looked frazzled. “It’s Hunter, my dearest love. And Sam,”
“Hello Sebby,’ Hunter said sarcastically. “What’s with your chipper mood? You’re usually a bitch,”
“Just Kurt here being an idiot,” Sebastian explained.
“I wasn’t being an idiot,” Kurt said quickly. “I just…”
“He tripped,” Sebastian said. “And it was funny,”
“You always have been clumsy cuz,” Hunter told him.
“Well it’s not important,” Kurt told him. “What are you two doing here?”
“Lightbulbs,” Sam said quickly. “We’re getting lightbulbs,”
“Because we need those for some reason,” Hunter added, causing Sam to kick him in his leg. “Ouch,”
“What’s with the bag?” Sam asked Sebastian.
“Oh, this?” Sebastian asked, smiling widely. “Well, Kurt here helped me pick out a present for my niece,”
“You have a niece?” Hunter asked him. “You never told me that,”
“It’s extended family,” Sebastian explained and then winked to Hunter when neither Sam nor Kurt were looking. Hunter seemed to get it. The bear was for Kurt. Boys were those idiots in for a surprise.
“Well we should get going,” Hunter said, referring to him and Sam. “Lots of lightbulbs to choose from, such little time. Bye Seb, bye Kurt, have a nice day,”
Hunter dragged Sam along with him away from Kurt and Sebastian.
“This was a bad idea,” Sam said when they were far enough away from them. “Sebastian’s right, bears are for little kids. Kurt’s going to hate this,”
“Look if you’re about to tell me that I spent two hours in your room discussing a present for Kurt and then we drove all the way here and we just lied to our boyfriends all for nothing then you’re crazy,” Hunter told him. “Man up Sam, it’s just a Christmas present. This is why I don’t do this in the first place, just get him something from the heart. Get him a stupid teddy bear and be done with it,”
“But what if he thinks that I think he’s a baby?” Sam asked as Hunter kept dragging him to the store.
“He won’t trust me,” Hunter told him, thinking back to Sebastian’s wink and the box. “For all you know, Kurt could be struggling with what to get you ,”
“Nah, Kurt’s great at this kind of stuff,” Sam sighed. “He’s perfect,”
“What’s wrong with them?” Kurt asked Sebastian as they watched them walk away. “Sam barely even said anything to me,”
“They just needed some light bulbs,” Sebastian assured him. “It’s a rough task, making sure you get the right one,”
“But I have lightbulbs at my house?” Kurt frowned. “Do you think he’s lying to me?”
“No, Sam loves you,” Sebastian said. “Trust me, it was just the lightbulbs. You probably didn’t have the right kind,”
“No, this was a mistake,” Kurt shook his head. “I have to find something else,”
“Something else?” Sebastian asked. “Oh come on Kurt, my feet hurt,”
“But what if he thinks I’m a loser when I give him a stuffed animal for Christmas Sebastian?” Kurt asked him. “I thought it was perfect but it’s not. I messed up,”
“I am not going back into another store,” Sebastian pouted. “What else could you possibly get him? Sam acts like a child anyway, he’ll love the bear,”
“But how can I be sure?” Kurt asked.
“You can’t be,” Sebastian told him. “Which is why you just have to trust your instinct. Besides, that bear was expensive and you can’t return it. If he doesn’t like the gift then he’s not worth your time,”
“But I love him,” Kurt told him.
“Then trust that he loves you back,” Sebastian smiled. “And let’s go, my feet are killing me. We’ve been here for hours and I can’t stand all these holiday shoppers. Hasn’t anyone ever heard of the internet?”
“Who are you, the Grinch?” Kurt said, rolling his eyes. “Fine, let’s go,”
And now it was Christmas morning and Kurt and Sam were more nervous than ever. Hunter and Sebastian were watching impatiently as they practically fought over who should open their present first.
“If you two don’t decide soon then I’m going to open the presents for you,” Hunter snapped.
“We could’ve been done by now,” Sebastian said. “This is ridiculous,”
“Sam really, I want you to go first,” Kurt said, pushing his wrapped gift towards Sam. “And then I’ll open mine,”
“But I want you to go first,” Sam said, pushing his bag towards Kurt. “And technically if you wanted to give me what I wanted then you’d let me go first,”
“But the same could be said for me,” Kurt told him.
“Fuck this,” Sebastian said, standing up and handing the presents to both of them. “If you can’t decide who goes first then go at the same time,”
“God you two don’t have to be so rude,” Kurt told Sebastian and Hunter.
“It’s Christmas morning,” Sam added.
“Bah humbug,” Hunter said. “I’m here because I’m family,”
“And I’m here because… well I don’t know why I’m here,” Sebastian said. “I guess I’ll leave then,”
“No, you’re here so I don’t go insane,” Hunter told Sebastian. “I hate this,”
“We’re opening the presents,” Kurt assured Hunter. “Sit back down,”
“Thank you,” Hunter said, sitting back down grumpily with Sebastian.
“On the count of three,” Sam told Kurt.
“One…”
“Two…”
“Three,” They both said before Sam opened his box and Kurt took his gift out of his bag. To say they were both shocked to see that they had gotten a Build A Bear teddy bear was an understatement. Not only were they both practically grown men but the fact that they had both been thinking about the same gift was shocking.
Sam had gotten Kurt a beige-colored bear with a white sweater and a black hat that he knew people in France wore because Kurt had one and had told him that. Kurt had gotten Sam the white bear he had picked out with a football helmet and a football accessory that was attached to a rubber band that you could attach to the bear’s hand.
“Oh my god,” Sebastian said laughing out loud along with Hunter. “You guys are the biggest idiots I know,”
“You got me a bear?” Sam asked Kurt. “But I got you a bear. And it was supposed to look like you too because of the hat,”
“Your’s was supposed to look like you too, Sam,” Kurt told him. “Because of the football,”
“And if you press down on it…” They both said together before looking up at each other. They had been thinking the same thing the whole time.
“Sam you didn’t have to do this,” Kurt smiled at him.
“Of course I did,” Sam shrugged. “I love you. The bear says so, just press down on his chest,”
“I love you, Kurt,” Played when Kurt pressed down on the bear’s chest and Kurt felt happy tears well up in his eyes.
“I’m so glad I stayed,” Sebastian said to Hunter.
“Wait, Kurt put it back in the bag so I can get your guy’s reactions again,” Hunter said. “This is YouTube-worthy,”
“Don’t ruin this for me, Hunter,” Kurt told him. “Sam, I love him. But press down on yours,”
“I love you, Sam,” Played when Sam pressed down on the bear’s chest and he smiled at Kurt.
“I love him too,” He told Kurt. “And I love you,”
“What a happy ending?” Hunter said, clapping his hands. “What did I tell you, Sam? Everything always works out in the end when you work with me,”
“Wait what?” Kurt asked, looking at Sam.
“I kind of couldn’t think of anything to get you for Christmas so Hunter helped me out,” Sam admitted to Kurt. “That day at the mall when I was there with him, we weren’t getting lightbulbs. We were getting your bear,”
“Oh,” Kurt said, looking over to Sebastian. “Well then if I’m being honest, your bear is the bear that Sebastian got for his niece that day. I didn’t want to ruin the surprise and I was kind of worried that you’d think a bear was childish,”
“So was I,” Sam told him. “But it’s not, I love my bear. Thank you,”
“You're welcome,” Kurt told him. “Thank you too,”
“So what are you guys going to do with those things?” Sebastian asked them.
“What do you think we’re going to do?” Sam asked him, smiling. “We’re going to play with them,”
“Oh god,” Hunter said, rolling his eyes. “Don’t tell me I turned you into a 5-year-old,”
“Oh and you two should get a bear too,” Kurt said. “Come on Hunter, Sebastian, it’s fun,”
“No thanks,” Sebastian said, putting his feet on top of Hunter and laying back on the couch. “I’m taking a nap, you guys are too much to handle,”
“Suit yourself,” Sam said, hugging Kurt. “Merry Christmas Kurt,”
“Merry Christmas Sam,” Kurt told him back. “I love you,”
